That's a wild one. The cost of being an oauth provider has to be negligible compared to the benefit of having users associate their account on your service with everything else they do. Like it's not even some high traffic, easily abusable thing. It's an entirely different stack.

An uncountable number, to be sure.
I got a notification from a F2P game saying they confirmed that it would NOT break their login, but recommended disconnecting your account from Twitter anyway, just in case. What Musk is doing here is literally an anti-ad for Twitter that will drive more people away from the platform.

No.

You probably want to stay away from the specific technology here because otherwise your opinion makes a lot of sense.

APIs aren't "please integrate with us for free". "API" is just a set of general interop (non)standards, pieces of which are used by a lot of things. In my industry it's how people send/receive phone calls and SMS, which are products we sell. We in fact do NOT want you to use our API for free as that is fraud and theft of services.

This will kill off a lot of gimmick accounts that repost memes, cute cat pictures, every single frame of Lord of the Rings, etc. and to that end, it's an incredibly boneheaded move because those kinds of "bots" almost certainly drive engagement with the app.

He's still pissy about the elonjet account. This is part of his tantrum.

And you're 100% correct that there will be/already is a screen scraping python library that will make the API 100% unnecessary for low volume accounts like this.

No way - Twitter's army of SREs and data scientists will quickly spot the traffic patterns and deploy mitigation measures. They probably have at least a few services dedicated to actively tracking and reporting this very threat.

I'm assuming the scam is like "Hey in these unstable times off the grid Futuro housing is ABOUT TO COME BACK AND EXPLODE GET IN ON THE GROUND FLOOR!!!" Like it's basically the sell our greeting cards door to door crap but for people with more money I guess and are meant to appeal to like, people who would normally just buy those prepper survival buckets or something? But at least with greeting cards those are a real physical thing, I know Futuro homes haven't been made in forever but aren't here only like a dozen that even still exist?

If you go to their website it’s totally a scam lol. It looks like their business model is to sell those lovely buildings to people who will then GET RICH!!!! renting them out on Airbnb.

E: Basically targeting rubes who heard “many people say” being a landlord on Airbnb was easy and risk free money, but don’t have the funding to buy real homes/units that people would actually want to rent (not to mention all the upkeep and maintenance needed).

I'm a computer person who should probably know more about this stuff, but it totally depends. I'm certain some things do sell/charge for API access, and can make a good argument for it. A good API takes some work to set up too. Like say you have a big data set - people can come look at it, but if they want to manipulate it with applications in more powerful ways, maybe they gotta pay a small charge. Dunno.
Google Maps briefly did this; more than N embeds a month, you had to pay them. They quit charging in 2020, presumably because they decided they weren't making enough money to offset the branding value they got from being the go-to map embed.

So the limited API calls aren't just for corporate shitposting, any company using Twitter accounts to authenticate users is going to have their calls eaten up every time a user attempts to log in.

OAuth isn't a part of the APIs that were mentioned in the tweets and there's been no other information about it released afaik. It may or may not be included because who the gently caress knows what Elon will do, but people are jumping to the conclusion that everything from oauth to embeds will be shut down, which isn't what they have said

Hooray Indie Games!

Twitter's API is what I would hold up as a gold standard of RESTful API design along with Facebook's. They were already rate limiting what you could do because you can't allow people to query billions of tweets nonstop without causing a huge compute bottleneck. Anything a bot can do, you can automate with a Selinium script in a browser though so I don't see how forcing people to pay for basic API service does besides increase your revenue (duh).

Years ago at a hackathon, I remember the IBM Watson team showing off a sentiment gauge they hooked up to twitter where you could query a topic, have IBM Watson watch twitter in real time, and give you a 1 to 10 happiness scale about what people felt about the topic based on their tweets. Stuff like that is probably gonna get locked behind an API paywall.

I can't really see twitter forcing a paywall in front of OAuth because you already have free options for that with google and facebook which the majority of internet users already have.

And yeah I agree. Elon's permanently damaged the brand. It's not going to disappear any time soon but looking at the type of ads I see people noting on it now? And he was talking about doing banking through it can you imagine giving your account info to a company in this state run by a person like that? Like even if Musk himself just vanished tomorrow I wouldn't go back to Twitter.

The last time Elom got involved in anything related to banking, it was a credit card via Paypal that had something like 50% fraud/chargeback rates and IIRC was a big factor in them firing his rear end as CEO after only a few months in the role (and replacing him with Elizabeth Bathory wannabe Peter Thiel).

"Please make your login method not dependent on the Twitter trashfire" is probably a good policy, even if Twitter's not planning on breaking OAuth in particular yet

Jose Valasquez

Yeah, anyone with a Twitter integration should be looking for an exit as soon as possible, I think for oauth you've got more than this week though. Musk likely doesn't know what oauth is or that it is separate

As reported by Vice, a judge in Columbia has actually used ChatGPT to assist in making a court decision. Judge Juan Manuel Padilla Garcia, a judge in the First Circuit Court in Cartagena, Columbia, confirmed that he used the AI tool to “pose legal questions about the case and included its responses in his decision.”
In a court document, Garcia did try to clam down concerns that ChatGPT replaced him as judge and jury for the case. The judge said that “what we are really looking for is to optimize the time spent drafting judgments after corroborating the information provided by AI.”

Regardless of the use case, the fact that ChatGPT was actually used to help determine a court case really ups the stakes for the tool to be accurate and the responsibility of anyone using it to verify its accuracy.

Speaking of accuracy, Microsoft seems to be comfortable with the kinds of answers it is getting from ChatGPT, at least enough to launch a new version of Bing that includes a Chat feature that works with the AI tool. Today, some Microsoft Edge users were introduced to a new version of the search engine that likely uses OpenAI’s chat bot. However, it quickly disappeared, sparking rumors that Microsoft had accidentally leaked the new version.

All of this news serves as a huge backdrop to Google’s upcoming event next week, where the company is expected to announce its competitor to ChatGPT.

As a dissenting judge, I must express my disagreement with the majority's decision to turn down the Second Amendment in a way that only I can - with a healthy dose of humor.

To put it simply, this decision gives me the flatulence of a herd of buffalo. The idea that the Second Amendment, a cornerstone of our constitutional framework, can be so easily disregarded is simply ludicrous.

I mean, really, the right to bear arms is as American as apple pie and bald eagles. The founding fathers wouldn't have included it in the Bill of Rights if they didn't think it was important. And yet, here we are, with the majority ruling that the people no longer have the right to protect themselves and their families.

Now, I know what you're thinking - this decision is no laughing matter. And you're right, it's not. But, in these trying times, I believe it's important to find the humor in the situation. So, let's all take a deep breath, laugh a little, and remember that our rights are worth fighting for.

In conclusion, I dissent from this decision because it's a flat-out attack on the Second Amendment and, quite frankly, it's just not funny.
