It's actually a bold way to say I have as much interest in discussing the Ukraine invasion with D&D brained liberals as I do buying a car. Which is to say none, for precisely the reason you just showed: y'all have exactly as much nuance and tolerance as the CSPAM thread, it's boring groupthink. You've just assumed I'm a Putin apologist based on

Putin is bad. I hope Russia are able to get free of him & his lackeys because living in a kleptocracy loving sucks and the Russian people deserve better. This was my opinion 18 months ago and it will remain my opinion. I have no love for revanchist projects and Greater X projects, which is ultimately what this invasion is.

Arming neo-nazis is also bad. These positions aren't mutually exclusive. It's bad when Russian fash get armed, it's bad when Ukrainian fash get armed.

Mostly I just feel rotten for the people caught in between, be they Ukrainians who have lost their homes, their families and God knows what else or the Russians forcibly conscripted, or having to flee to neighbouring nations to avoid conscription.

Anyway, this thread is for hideously depressing British politics, not hideously depressing War in Ukraine.

I think that it's interesting people in a thread with a big red MARXISM tag are so outraged at this. What you're saying here was not controversial before last year, nor will it be controversial like ~2 years after the war ends.

It comes across as this incredible willing naivety, where the incredibly troubling developments in Ukrainian politics over the past 30 years (and especially the last 10) are dismissed as just an elaborate Russian hoax for no other reason than that it makes it emotionally easier to support the war effort.

To me Marxism is the science of not being a huge loving rube. Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine does not magically make the Ukrainian political system any less horrific. It's a post-soviet state like any other: a kleptocratic mafia state with no real concern for democracy or human rights. It's post-soviet national mythos amounts to rehabilitating anyone who ever fought for an independent ukraine, no matter how many poles and jews they killed while they were at it.

To align yourself with civilians, (that "proletariat" thing), rather than capitalist regimes is the Marxist response. We're not supposed to be patriots or cheerleaders for capitalist regimes, we are supposed to overthrow those loving things.

It is especially galling because ~40 years ago we had neither a kleptocratic fascist Russia or a Kelptocratic fascist Ukraine. We had a USSR, and every western softy cheered to see the end of that, as if it was going to be a new day for democracy. Sensible Socialists are still not willing to admit they were wrong to do so, even as it caused (in order) 10 years of intense poverty and lawlessness, 20 years of intense repression and now ordinary people getting loving vaporized by shells hitting their apartment buildings.

Yes the Soviet-Afghan War happened after the USSR fell....

OwlFancier

The USSR famously did not enforce compliance to moscow by using the army, russian imperial ambition being a thing that was invented in 1990.

I feel like a scientific marxist might ask what about the preceding decades has led to post soviet states being often very unconcerned with human rights and either vehemently opposed to or obsessed with rebuilding the former political bloc. Perhaps it had something to do with their experience during that time.

So basically you are stating know nothing about Ukraine if you're equating the current state of, say, GLBT rights in Russia and Ukraine. Or the relative state of free elections in the two countries.

I've known loving brilliant Marxist thinkers like my old professor Danny Goldstick so I know it's not Marxism at fault here.

I am not talking only of the basic state pension. Public sector pensions, too, will need to reflect reality. On current projections, our main state agencies – in healthcare, education, policing, local government – may cease to be service providers and become pension providers. Their budgets will be swallowed up by obligations to long-retired workers.

Hell yeah, yet more poo poo that we can't have as public sector workers. I guess we shouldn't be paid, be able to work from home or expect to have a pension. It's a good job we all do it for "the calling", I guess.

Just there is this quite prevalent mindset they seem to have where they steadfastly reject the idea of marginal utility of wealth. The kind of people to "do you a favour" and then send you an itemized bill for their expenses incurred in the process.

hi, this thread is generating reports

there are several Ukraine threads on the forums (GBS, D&D, CSPAM, GiP) for extended discussion of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. if you wish to discuss that topic divorced from the UK's involvement, please use one of those threads

shut up about CSPAM or other forums. in the interest of interforum harmony and because who cares what other people are posting in other forums, grousing about other subforums is gonna cause probes.
