It sucks because it seems more and more “legit” channels are using shorts so they get mixed up in my feed now alongside videos I want to watch.

Blown away that people actually use youtube beyond just occasionally clicking on links to videos from elsewhere. It's more irritating than any other site for me, at this point. Even worse than Reddit.

The finest minds at YouTube have tuned their algorithm so that the front page suggests me van living videos (no slight to the people into it but I don't even drive LOL) and all the shorts it shows me are poo poo about Jordan loving Peterson or Andrew Tate. That being said, YouTube Premium and only browsing your subscriptions is pretty good.

I had YouTube premium for so long I legit forgot there were even ads until I tried watching on a different account. What a nightmare.

Yeah it's like using a new computer before installing an adblocker, just awful. Edit: And the family plan is wonderful, getting my family members on it was great since seemingly nobody ever wants to pay for anything they use, but they also hate the ads. There’s a thing you can do to pay the Argentine or Indian price instead. Like $4 a month or something. Pain in the rear end but totally worth it.

I turned off video and search history, and then manually blacklisted a handful of channels in my Home - Recommended almost every day until the algorithm gave up and only shows me videos from my Watch Later/subs (which is what I wanted in the first place), and a couple randoms (which I also blacklist). After seven years or so, I've told YouTube not to recommend a good five thousand channels and climbing. It has no idea what the gently caress to do. The only good curation is self-curation.

Yeah I usually blacklist any channel mentioning Jorp, Tate etc but the fans seem to keep setting up new channels constantly (and yeah I clear my history periodically). Also after typing that previous message I watched a van video and now probably hosed everything up even more!

I use youtube solely for asmr videos and let's plays of games for nerds and I go through waves; sometimes the recommendations will be shockingly good for a week or two, then suddenly right into pushing right wing propaganda. I really hate this almost victim-blaming tendency to assume someone getting bad recommendations must have done something to anger the almighty algorithm, it's always been varying types of poo poo by design.

"Should it even be possible to be recommended fetish porn on an ostensibly all-ages website?" "Oooh someone's telling on themselves, these are based on your browser history " I've been guilty of this myself, the urge to get in a dunk is really strong, especially when it's a right-wing pundit complaining. But you can have microtargeting and content moderation, it just costs money corps don't wanna spend
|
# ? Feb 6, 2023 03:04 |
I've had several Facebook accounts over the years and they've all eventually drifted to the conclusion that I'm Jewish, based on the ads I get (flattered, but nope.) Also about a 2 month period where I was constantly being bombarded with ads for engagement/wedding rings when I wasn't remotely in the market, and then 2 months after that all my ads were for those aggressively masculine branded products—dude wipes, man bathrobes, dude soap for your balls etc. I spend like 90% of my fun money on video games and metal concerts, my browsing history reflects this, it should not be this difficult to advertise to me. I vaguely recall reading that just putting static, subject-based ads on relevant websites is more effective than all the algorithmic microtargeting, but of course there's an entire ecosystem built on convincing people otherwise.

I have a really neat trick to deal with the youtube recommended videos section: if it recommends me a video I don't want to see, I don't watch it, and then I go about my day without complaining because it's not a big deal unless you're a lunatic. It's like the guy at the train station offering you crack. You can just be like, "no, man, I'm good!" and walk away. Someone else is gonna buy his crack, you don't need to spend a single goddamn second thinking about why he offered you, specifically the crack because it does not matter. Personally, I enjoy decently targeted advertising. "Would you like to buy this guitar?" Why, yes, random ad, I would. I would very much like to buy that guitar.

It's OKAY for mindless browsing from the TV, but I would pay extra to just have it pull exclusively from my subscriptions and provide baseline sorting/organizing tools. On PC I just bookmark channels and videos. Still a thousand times better than tv. MixMasterMalaria fucked around with this message at 05:42 on Feb 6, 2023 |
