What resource did you use to learn your lighting? You're really good!

sephiRoth IRA posted:What resource did you use to learn your lighting? You're really good! Basically everything I post is a photo study, which means 90% of the work is done for me, because for me art is more of a head empty just vibes exercise. I tend to pick photos with dramatic lighting because it's way easier to imply form and structure with heavier shadows. So, like, I can constantly compare to the reference to see if something needs to be lighter or darker or whatever. (Which leads to the other 10% of the work, which is knowing how to use art programs, which for me mostly boils down to using Addition Layers to brighten areas and Overlay layers to darken areas) I think maybe the easiest thing to point you to, as like a foundational tool, is Blocking In Shadows/Value Blocking: Unfortunately I don't have, like, one specific good resource I can point you in the direction of.

day 38. i'm really into head tilted down references right now because for whatever reason this angle breaks my brain. i think it's the mouth position shifting that throws me off, because position is usually my anchor point. TurnipFritter fucked around with this message at 22:06 on Feb 15, 2023 |

Hey turnip fritters, do you have a Pinterest or anything similar with a collection of your photo refs? You pick some good portraits to study!! If anyone would be willing to share some input about this painting, I'd be very grateful. My spouse is publishing an academic book in his field and asked me if I could make the cover image. He wanted something cubist, particularly synthetic cubism in the vein of Juan Gris. I've never drawn anything like this before, so I'm uncertain of its quality. He seems happy with it, but I am mildly concerned with putting like obviously amateur art on his book.
