I faintly recall hearing that (for this exact reason) they just changed the stirrer from a tiny spoon to a flat paddle shape. But I might be misremembering; this all happened long before I ever had my first cup of coffee.

e: Looks like we're both right, they stopped making it and then came out with the paddle stirrer a few months later.

IRT smoking

Portsmouth, VA opened up a Rivers Casino that was full smoking-allowed in the Casino area, but not the restaurants.

after numerous complaints :

https://www.pilotonline.com/news/vp-nw-portsmouth-casino-smoking-20230130-6g6o7wjsx5alhbwfn5bvp3rgsu-story.html

"Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, a nonprofit that works to prevent the effects of secondhand smoke, compared having a smoking section to having a “peeing section in a pool.

They're going to try to split the casino floor into smoking and non-smoking. It'll probably need some pretty big renovations to make that happen, but we'll see!

They'll be going from like 80% smoking areas, down to about 20% smoking areas.

also ... it's like downtown Portsmouth, which is one of the most crime ridden areas in the Hampton Roads area. lol. It's only been open for like 10 days.

People sometimes forget that there was time where you could smoke almost anywhere, except maybe the doctor's office and schools. You could smoke in grocery stores, malls, restaurants, cars and for a while even movie theaters. You could have two parents smoking in a car with the window closed and any complaints from the kids was merely noise. Same goes for get-togethers at somebody's house. The whole house would fill with smoke so thick it would make your eyes water but nothing could or would be done about it.

Ugh, I've realised as an adult that that was my house growing up. My parents smoked inside for the best part of 40 years. I was probably that weird smelling kid at school, but never realised it.

My wife refuses to sleep in that house, even though my mum no longer smokes (lung cancer) and she deep cleaned the house. You can't just wash that smell out.

In the late 90s I played late night gigs at the local nightclub before smoking was outlawed, we'd load the amps and gear into my truck at the end of the night. By the next morning the truck reeked like George Hamilton's cigar lounge purely through second and third-hand embedded ciggie smoke.

I bought a 1970s wristwatch recently and it came in a box that absolutely reeked of stale cigarette smoke. I didn't think I would get the full 70s ambience included with the watch :v:

Fear not, that smell is still going strong. We routinely get pets in at my work that absolutely reek of cigarette smoke, and I don't think it's cause the dog had a quick smoke before they came in for their appointment.

It’s in the carpets. It’s in the walls. It’s in every nook and cranny. I remember moving out of the last place I lived where I smoked and seeing the change in color for the carpet and wall when I would remove something that was covering them was pretty alarming. That poo poo was what was going in my lungs.

Oh, jesus... that's a flashback! I went to DoD school in 5th and 6th grades, and that was what they had in the bathrooms. Didnt have anything printed on it, though. Hated it and almost never pooped at school.

IIRC, it was also called John Wayne toilet paper - rough, tough, and doesn't take poo poo off of anybody.

When we helped my buddy clear out his mom's condo after she passed, someone asked why she had caulked all of the corners, which is when we realized the corners all had a narrow strip of the original white paint, where the years of smoke just hadn't managed to circulate into while yellowing every other sq inch of wall.

I worked at a video store in the 90s and we were the only place in town that rented porn ("skinners" in our parlance). On certain days you could get 5 videos for 5 days for $5.00 and that included skinners. Those tapes would come back and you could smell the cigarette smoke on them, in them. You could smell 'em from across the room. At some point, my boss was like "screw them, they'll pay whatever" and took the skinners off the 5 for $5 deal. Boss was right, they'd still rent 5 movies at $3.99 a night.

Skinners kept the store afloat. A couple times a year, I'd call this guy in New York and he'd ship us a box of 10-15 random porn videos for like $64. Most of those would bring in more than $1000 in rental fees in their lifetime.
