Power metal is a great gateway drug
The orchestral synths made Dimmu Borgir not too far a leap
From there, well, better black metal

Power metal led to Master of Puppets and becoming a thrash fan which led to Death and that was the ballgame.

I've actually become increasingly fond of a variety of power metal as I've grown older. Even the cheesier stuff. I got into metal at the peak of the thrash years, went on through to death metal, was there for the 90s Norwegian black metal wave, lots of doomdeath like early Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride and whatnot, funeral doom in the early 2000s and so on... there were always a handful of lighter/happier bands that I respected and liked but whenever I felt like listening more to power metal I just ended up spinning Nightfall in Middle Earth a bunch of times. Until fairly recently.

I wouldn't call most power metal intolerable but it is very much a small-doses thing 99% of the time and the ballads are near universally awful. Unfortunately power metal albums are like 58 minutes long on average and have at least two of those. But Blind Guardian are one of the best metal bands, full stop.

I don't really have an opinion on the drums, but I will say that it's a rare loving treat to get to appreciate a power metal album for its bass guitar tone. I was never a superfan, but some of Metalium's early stuff was dope as hell. And that tasty clonking bass is a big factor in that. And I like the overall sound too, it has that metallic kinda echo to it (Hibria's debut does the same thing) that I feel is a good fit.

Also they made one of the best covers of Smoke on the Water.

Big same. I enjoy some twinkly synth/orchestral cheese too, but way too much power metal just relies on some cheesy synth hooks and vaguely catchy choruses with a big orchestral sound carpet on top to obfuscate that nothing else is really going on. Then occasionally some band comes around who remember that it's loving supposed to be guitar music and also write songs where something loving happens. Case in point: Eternity's End. (Also a good segue from Hibria because same dude on vocals)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djUppB_O1DU

Actually, I just noticed a good "degrees of separation" kinda chain here. Bear with me.

So, Iuri Sanson from Hibria is also in Eternity's End. They in turn had guest background vocals from Piet Sielck of Iron Savior, who are also a staple "PROPER loving power metal" band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnMFjC7QMGc

Of course, Iron Savior also used to have Sielck's buddy Kai Hansen (Reminder that they co-wrote a power metal song so good it was on both Iron Savior's and Gamma Ray's albums). Kai Hansen also did a guest appearance on what is secretly one of the best power metal albums since the early 2000s, the criminally overlooked Reverence by Merging Flare. They have that signature joyful Euro power metal energy, but also GUITARS and a sound with some edge to it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOcNfbmQv_4

Merging Flare's vocalist, Matias Palm, is also currently the vocalist in Blazon Stone, who are easily the best Running Wild worship band, and these days arguably a better Running Wild than Running Wild are.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Me-fcouE7c0

And, lastly, whatever their current state might be, Running Wild are still Running Wild, and as such have the actual loving best power metal riffs.

Imaginations is the best, but Night at the Opera is way better than it should be for how silly it is. I think it's the last Blind Guardian album I really like. Everything after that has been downhill. Twist in the Myth and Edge of Time had their moments but I never go back to those.

indeed, i just like dumb stupid happy music sometimes and power metal fits the bill perfectly. same reason i like a lot of folk metal.

For example, the opening riff to Little Dreamer by Ensiferum always, always puts a huge grin on my face.

I listen to way more black and death than power, but that's more so because there's a shitload more black and death bands. Pm was always the genre I liked most when listening to metal all the way back to the beginning when my gateway bands were all nwobhm so that transition was easy, and then pm was an easy gateway into melodeath and meloblack which then got me into the pure stuff. The last few years have been really good for pm, seems like every december when I look back on the best releases of that year there's multiple power or power adjacent albums I loved. Like this Dire Peril album, or the debut Fellowship.

Really good music for just looping the same album you love while you focus on something else like painting warhams.

I still pretty much only listen to the same half a dozen (prog-)power bands I did when I was a young teenager, but I've considerably warmed up to the vocal style. This Galneryus song is a great tune to run to in general, but this particular live performance (at 8:35 if it doesn't automatically jump there) starts off with what might be my all-time favorite air raid siren impression:
