I gotta say LG that some of your posts annoy me but mostly as the tangents bury the posts that some others and I do. But that’s probably more a me problem and I don’t want to see someone struggling to afford some strings when this is such a big part of their life. So yeah I’m in on the LG String Fund.

Lungboy posted:I've been doing some more reading on guitars and browsing various shops online and I'm 99% decided I want to park my Washburn for the time being and get something with a hard tail and maybe a slightly smaller scale than the MG74. I'm a bit paralysed by how many guitars are out there that look cool and review well, but my budget is around £400 and I have 2 top options at the moment, a PRS 245 Standard or a Harley Benton SC Custom Plus. They're the same price, although the PRS comes with a quality gig bag too. Scales are 24.5 vs 24.75, so pretty similar. The PRS has a slightly thicker neck but only by a couple of mm. There's no chance to try either in person, but both can be returned within 30 days. It's hard to look past the PRS on the headstock, but the HB is (more) beautiful imo. I'd go Harley Benton because neck thickness bothers me more than scale length - didn't get on with a PRS S2 because of a Pattern Vintage neck. I've only played the old school EMG 81/85 set and I wasn't a fan but I'd be willing to bet those EMGs sound better than most of the off-the-shelf pickups you find in guitars at that price point, and if you disliked them you could probably rip them out, sell them, and pick up a set of Duncans or whatever and come out close to even. landgrabber posted:carrie brownstein has made SG's cool to me Given your taste in guitars and music i think you'd really vibe with an SG.

Thanks both. Compelling arguments for getting the Harley over the PRS which is the way I was leaning too so now to introduce the idea of needing a new guitar to my wife....

I'm similar in that I've been more interested in songs than technique, because for me, I need to be able to play a little in order to even identify what interesting technique to me *is* and I'm gravitating towards a lot of noise-pop for that, while stepping back and reminding myself I can do a bunch of whammy bar unison bends and atonal double stops once I've got solid foundations down.

I bought an SG Classic in 2010 in standard transparent red. Comes with P90s in the "Batwing" pickguard and TOM/STP bridge/tailpiece. Didn't come with a hardshell case, though. I was told that Gibson didn't provide hardshell cases for guitars under a thousand dollars (this guitar had MSRP $999), and they showed me the "Gibson USA" gig bag that (supposedly) came with it. I want to sell it, but I'm afraid it won't arrive intact if I try to sell on Reverb and ship it. Something about it seems so fragile to me, even in the TKL hardshell case I bought for it.

SGs should be natural with a small guard and beat up with extra holes and a fixed neck heel break and bought at a pawn shop for $350 Unless it's a Melody Maker, then it should be red*. *Melody Makers should really Pelham Blue, but that makes them cost about 50% more than what I paid, so red it is!

How’s this shopping list look (taking it to a shop so I want to make sure I have everything to hand over to them at once) for swapping my single coil neck pickup for a humbucker in my tele: -Neck pickup (Seymour Duncan SH-55n) -Pickguard cut for a humbucker -2x 500k pots -a 470k resistor so that the single coil sees 250 instead of 500 Am I missing anything obvious? Idk if I’d want the ability to split the neck humbucker for SS tones but if so one of those pots can be a push pull and I’m set, right?

those little saddle screws? that you use to set action height? the one i stripped out? starting to think it may nto even necessarily be that i stripped it out, at least not at first, but the screw doesn't even move around a little bit in its socket, like all the other ones do. it may as well be welded in-- can't get it to budge with needlenose pliers or anything. so strange

There's a possibility it's threaded wrong for the hole and got jammed in there. Have you or Faust ever tried adjusting it? Is this a new development?

You know your middle position is going to be really dark and muddy, right? Related, I think I'm going to try going with a low-wind PAF and running a 1M resistor so that both neck and bridge see ~333k, or maybe use Bare Knuckles 280k pots. Hoping that doesn't make my bridge too bright. luchadornado fucked around with this message at 01:36 on Feb 9, 2023 |
