Browser tabs I'm usually pretty good about, but I can't be blamed that my employer has the information I need spread around eight different Excel workbooks and nine Word documents. If having all of them open all the time makes my laptop sound like a hairdryer, so be it.

Well I don't know how this works but you see I suspect if I close the tab instead of simply reloading it I'm going to use up one of my five free articles for the month!

I'm actually pretty good about reading articles or abandoning them, but every time I watch a sport I have like 16 different basketball/hockey/football sports reference pages open when I think of something random that I want to look up. I guess I do the same for shows but to a lesser extent.

I haven’t built a computer in ages, since the little shuttle case build I threw together in college when I was still gaming on PC (TFC engineer/sniper ) but I may have to put something together as a personal project in the upcoming few years.

Honestly though what little gaming I do is on PS but I’d like to build out something for home entertainment since streaming is so hosed.

The resources to build your own PC now are soooooo much better than they were a decade or so ago.

I built a desktop machine for my nephew a month and a half ago. It was a good way to re-use some parts I'd just pulled from my own computer, and the balance of what he needed cost less than the laptops my sister was able to afford while being much better. He was frustrated because he'd gotten a new laptop with intel integrated graphics and some ancient, unsupported app on steam he was using didn't work with it.

Anyway with modular power supplies and modern cases, it's so much easier these days. I didn't slice my hands up on sharp stamped steel case parts, the screws are mostly thumb screws, attention was actually paid to cable management and proper cooling, it was pretty great! Of course I still had to run to a store because I forgot that he'd need a wifi adapter and he also needed a power strip. But I think he's pretty happy about the comparatively huge 32" screen compared to his old laptop.

I used to be way into it. Of course this was more like 20 years ago. Had a mixed parts bin of discarded hardware from an IT job and could put little desktops together. Then built a couple powerful desktops in the time and dicked around with Linux off and on.

I prob need to dig back into it since a bit of my EE education is prob going to be in coding and hardware circuits.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

I had a friend help me build my desktop like 9 years ago, and it's been a solid machine for me. I had to change out my fans because they started making a ton of noise, and I upgraded my hard drive to an SSD. Only thing I've really had to do with it in that time period. It's nice to have more knowledge of the inner workings of the thing and be able to upgrade/replace as needed. Honestly, I use it so little I could probably go another 3-4 years before replacing it. I don't play any games that require high-end hardware, so that makes things easier on me.

I got my current laptop (Dell) in 2016, put in double RAM and a small SSD as the boot drive, and it still runs great today. Gonna be really sad when I have to retire it, especially if manufacturers are soldering those "upgradeable" parts nowadays.

Also it has a dedicated video card that I feel like I've barely used, not that I'm playing anything these days that needs vRAM (or playing anything period :negative:)

I want a laptop that can do all the basic poo poo like email and shitposting, but also maybe something that’s strong enough to run video if I’m streaming or whatever without any lag. I don’t want to go super expensive but I also don’t want a hunk of poo poo either. Looking to spend around $1k.

There’s all kinds of stuff on Best Buy and those places but I’m functionally illiterate when it comes to that kind of stuff and was hoping someone knew of something worthwhile that also might be a good deal.

Go for a nice Chromebook for those needs.

my work requires that we replace our laptops every 3 years
like they realized it was cheaper to replace everything when the warranty runs out than it is to pay an IT dept. to service a bunch of laptops past their warranty, made this decision company-wide, and now it's mandatory
if our laptops break now, in-warranty, we don't take them to IT we mail them to dell or whoever and we get a loaner from a small stack at IT till it comes back fixed
honestly it's wasteful but apparently they destroy the drives and then donate the machines to schools and charities so at least they're not going straight to landfill, and while reinstalling and configuring my environment every three years is a hassle, I don't mind having a new machine, they don't suck

That sounds kind of nice. I keep putting it off because I don’t want to be that guy always requesting new stuff, and the thing still works fine except the battery kind of sucks now. My biggest complaint is that it’s bulky and heavy. Thing weighs over 10 lbs. and I think everyone who has a new laptop has nice thin, lightweight ones.

Stationary bike chat: A couple friends of mine work at VZFit which is a VR based thingie that attaches to your stationary bike so it knows how hard you're pedaling, and pipes cleaned up google streetview footage into your faceholes so you can ride on real roads and what have you without being killed by cars. Seems like a variant of the Peloton concept, and is a lot cheaper/works on any bike. I haven't tried it but their core customers seem to love the product. Might be of interest to some of y'all.

Tabs chat: I once had over 2000 tabs open in a browser at work and I am pretty proud of that achievement. My job includes clicking on like 50 email links a day and who has time to close tabs when you can simply just download an extension that keeps a little counter in the top right of the browser window which you then use to brag to your slack group chat with the number occasionally. Additionally, fellow tablovers should be using Firefox. Chrome thinks each new tab is a full instance of Chrome because FF is a better browser right now.

Laptop chat: You can't go wrong with a refurb'd Lenovo Thinkpad. They're durable as poo poo, ubiquitous, and corporate users are always recycling perfectly good 3 month old ones into the used sales pool.

The outsourced IT "augmentation" folks my company went to to "modernize" and "speed up basic processes" decided they are going to require DNS changes to go through our company's formal change process. That means my CNAME update for a non-production, internal-only server that the same augmentation folks told me I had to migrate to Azure will now require a peer approval, system owner approval, DNS team approval, and Infrastructure Head approval as well as a 4 day lead time and implementation plan along with testing evidence. For a DNS CNAME change.

I hate IT so goddamn much.
