freeedr posted:My school didn’t have a dedicated sex ed thing but it was in the curriculum as part of science class for everyone in middle and high school. They also had multiple guest speakers that came to talk about the STDs they caught and have forever because they were cavalier with sex, and those guys talked about using condoms, monogamy, etc. He was also a little overly excited about sharing the STD pictures but he let people opt out (another thing I think he deviated from the curriculum on) and just passed them around to the willing which was the incredibly online portion of the class going "oooh just like rotten.com" to out edge the other kids.

Phosphine posted:I didn't have a lot of good things to say about seventh grade sex ed (it did after all take place in a setting where teenage boys aren't just tolerated, but even encouraged, to participate) but at least it was factually accurate and carried out by an actual adult, placing it somewhere in the top one percent it sounds like? In our 8th grade sex ed, they showed us a slide show (with cassette beep) of chopped up fetuses, with detailed descriptions. Half of the class was crying just a few minutes in. In retrospect, they were old enough that they were obviously pictures of late-term miscarriages, but that certainly didn't make things better.

I went to a Catholic convent school for my secondary education, and when homosexuality came up in religion class, the teacher pushed the standard catholic Church line that it's fine to be gay as long as you don't do anything gay, like have sex. We pushed back on this as completely nonsensical, and she just sighed and basically said, 'yeah, its bullshit but I gotta teach the curriculum' I met her years later and she was a very sensible person. They also brought in a 'cool' priest to tell us how awesome and inclusive the Catholic Church was. This was in the 1990s, when revelations about coverups of massive levels of pedophilia being covered up by senior Church hierarchy were in the news every single day. We asked Father Funtimes about all the lying and moving pedophiles around to avoid legal retribution, and he got really aggressive, lost the cheery, friendly manner, and said in all his life he'd only known maybe 3-4 pedophiles. We (a roomful of 15 year old girls) pointed out that personally knowing multiple identified pedophiles is incredibly abnormal and weird, and so he went off in a huff. We were mildly scolded by the nuns for being "harsh" at a priest, but nuns have a horrible habit of behaving like groupies around a priest.

Ok I am not sure why the funny pictures thread has a high school sex harassment derail? I don't think this is what the thread would like so if we can put a halt on that conversation that would be great

I want this to induce so much pearl-clutching in that TX town, only for someone to explain, "Oh, it's just slang from Nigeria." And then that's misinterpreted to cause even further pearl-clutching.

Once minors get involved, if elder leadership and community management is bad? It can get dark fast. Turns out the aftershocks of things like AIDS really did leave a vacuum for mature community growth. I was joking...
