vinyl chloride isn't even the most dangerous materiel transported domestically by trains is it?

the trains unions had been saying all last year how bad the skeleton crews were getting, how rushed the schedules were, and that it was impossible to take a sick day.

how many east ohio/west pennsylvanians will have to call sick now? great loving work Norfolk Southern.

this private sector gently caress up makes the Evergreen Suez Canal Crisis look like the NFL Rams twitter needing to find his wife and head to pf changs

well they move all the radioactive stuff via train usually so you could get a bunch of contaminated stuff dumped but that danger os probably easier to contain than a gas.
chemical wise yeah theres worse. you dont want a hydrogen flouride car to derail near you unless you want a low, non dissipating, cloud of ultra corrosive poison hanging out near by.

HF almost got released in philly a few years ago it was a near miss at a refinery where everything next to the HF blew up but the HF didnt. due to the amount involved they estimated a 7 mile wide death cloud would have overtaken parts of the city with no time to evacuate had it been a worst case scenario based on a test performed in the nevada desert:

quote:

The definitive experiment on the release of hydrofluoric acid was done back in 1986, and it did not go well.

The oil company Amoco requested the test. It was building a refinery in Texas and hoping to use a system of ponds to help mitigate any leaks of hydrogen fluoride.

Ron Koopman conducted the experiment. He's a physicist and expert on chemical safety, and worked as a researcher at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for 36 years. He says when about 1,000 gallons of HF were released in the Nevada desert test site, the results were shocking.

The HF turned into an expanding vapor cloud. A terrifying video of the experiment shows white billowing clouds of the toxin getting larger and moving rapidly along the ground. Koopman says deadly concentrations of HF traveled for miles.

"How many times do we try this before we actually get a release that kills 1,000 people?" Koopman said in an interview with NPR. "People should never have been allowed to live this close to these refineries. It's just unconscionable to have allowed that to happen."

Koopman says those exposed to HF die a horrible death. The chemical penetrates the skin and reacts with calcium in bones. Swallowing just a small amount, or getting small splashes on the skin, can be fatal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In its gaseous state, the CDC says low levels can irritate the eyes, nose and respiratory tract. Breathing it at high levels "can cause death from an irregular heartbeat or fluid buildup in the lungs."

Cool, cool. Vancouver Island's pulp & paper mills keep shutting down and the railway is deteriorating anyway so there's not much in the way of chlorine and sulphur dioxide going by on the local line. That stuff looks like orange juice compared to Hydrogen Fluoride.

Years ago a friend who worked for Marine Traffic told me about parcel tankers - small, highly specialized chemical tankships containing multiple compartments with highly specialized linings. These little tankers wander the world's ocean transporting small shipments of exotic chemicals to their location. They tend to follow a tramp steamer routine - your shipment will get there eventually unless you want to pay $$$$$ so in the meantime it will see more foreign harbours than you ever will. It's not unknown for one of these ships to have 90+% of the world's inventory of a particular chemical on board.

If one of these ships ever gets in trouble someone's beach is in for an interesting time. This is the sort of thing that keeps marine traffic controllers awake at night apparently.

Think of the economic benefit all these healthcare jobs will create!

Why do you hateful environmentalists want to take away thousands of jobs from home healthcare workers, from nurses, from oncologists and radiologists??

Billions of economic activity will be created thanks to the thoughtfulness of Norfolk Southern!

I thought big bad explosions only happened in communist countries due to their evil keeping of secrets, lack of transparency, and poor economic planning.
At least this will lead to an honest reflection on the role that capitalism might have played in this tragedy.
