Beachcomber posted:Is he a Snowshoe Hare? It certainly could be. The pointy ears made me think white-tailed jackrabbit. I'm not a bunnyologist, and never thought to ask him. He was quite a hefty hopper, around the upper bounds of white-tailed jackrabbit. Wikipedia says snowshoe hares are considerably smaller. dogs evolved whites in their eyes alongside us, to mirror the whites in our eyes, which are specifically to help us see where other people are looking

visible sclera aren't that common.wikipedia posted:Human eyes are somewhat distinctive in the animal kingdom in that the sclera is very plainly visible whenever the eye is open. This is not just due to the white color of the human sclera, which many other species share, but also to the fact that the human iris is relatively small and comprises a significantly smaller portion of the exposed eye surface compared to other animals. It is theorized that this adaptation evolved because of our social nature as the eye became a useful communication tool in addition to a sensory organ. It is believed that the conspicuous sclera of the human eye makes it easier for one individual to identify where another individual is looking, increasing the efficacy of this particular form of nonverbal communication, called cooperative eye hypothesis.[9] Animal researchers have also found that, in the course of their domestication, dogs have also developed the ability to pick up visual cues from the eyes of humans. Dogs do not seem to use this form of communication with one another and only look for visual information from the eyes of humans.[10]

Yeah that's just how eyes generally work in nature

The majority of animals don't have whites of their eyes tho, & dogs specifically are one of the few to look at a human's eyes to try and figure out what they're looking at, apes don't do this and usually don't even have white sclera. Even animals that have whites have huge irises that block off almost the whole opening of the eyelids & communicate what they're looking at by turning the whole head

My really quite clever and very intuitive dog only half gets pointing. He knows that me pointing means there is something interesting to be had, but he cannot grasp the idea of looking at where I am pointing to.

the key is to link pointing to throwing, if you have a dog that can fetch you can pretend throw at something that you want them to get that is already there
