I just clowned on a guy with meldweb curator to put a aspirant's ascent on top of my library, drawing it mid combat with compleat devotion and destroying their now terrible blocks. And I absolutely planned it that way and wasn't just swinging to sneak toxic damage through. Totally planned.

The funny thing about this is that golden packs actually made draft harder. When drafting was the best way to build a collection, you could bump up your stats a little by getting a free win in the first or 2nd round, because there were a bunch of career 0-3 or 2-3 players padding your winrate. Now you have a much higher chance of seeing someone who is capable of going like 5-3 in your first couple rounds. So if you were going 3-3 before golden packs, you probably want to buy golden packs now too because unless you put a lot of $$$ and effort into getting better, you are going to hit a brick wall. The average skill level just went up.

Yesterday I had the most amazingly grindy draft game as temur oil against a player on blue/white artifacts. I had churning reservoir and rustvine cultivator pumping out a 1/1 every turn, conduit of worlds recurring cankerbloom or the reach spider to chump block fliers, and the clone sword turning those tokens into extra copies of those two. At one point they used blue sun's twilight just to steal the cultivator. Eventually just let them mill themselves out with tamiyo's logbook.

Magic is a little bit fun when you come up with your own decks. You end up thinking things like, "I will get a win with this bullshit I've lovingly created with my own mind!" And going 0-4 before it works perfectly and you're proven to be a brain genius. I'm not at the point yet where I can just look at things and see why they will or won't work, or identify everything about why something isn't playing out, but that takes actually playing games and tilting at those windmills. Going 6-15 with my first deck has been fun though. I just worry about running into another Arena stall point where I have to play a certain type of deck to get anything out of it, and it's not enjoyable/too prescriptive while I'm still learning.

Thanks for the time and notes. I valued Myr as just a mana dork that happens to have an on-rate body with visions of ramping out Mantises and Oil Trolls. Green dried right up but thankfully red was wide open, yeah. I will probably lose the tap land/Reservoir and add the Fleshes/Crescendo and just turn guys sideways.

my first draft i went blue/black cause no one was taking it but now i know why no one was taking it. next i went white red aggro but that turned out to not really be a thing and got 4 wins. drafted the new emporer and never drew it. sad! next i went white black and got six wins. this is apparently a thing. i drafted the new kaya and resolved it once. opp instant conceded i dont know how yall draft green cards i dont think ive ever seen one. i have like 8 more wins until i break out of gold and 0-3 every draft so looking forward to try and find one

Went RG in draft since I started on migloz, colors were open, proceeded to go 2-3 getting wrecked by drawing crap 1 game, and making a bad misplay on another. One though, I don't understand what happened. I had Hexgold Halberd on the field, the rebel had died so it wasn't equipped anymore. I tried to Nahiri's Sacrifice it, but arena wouldn't let me select the halberd as sacrifice-able.

I've started playing again after taking a break for a couple of expansions. I netdecked a Tyvar Jund deck and am really enjoying it in BO1. Someone asked about saving up gold and buying packs and I've pretty much been able to play for free for a long time. I play BO1 ranked or play queue with a deck that I enjoy. I save up the gold and buy packs to get wildcards. When I started up again, I had 200K gold and bought 180 packs of the latest expansion. I'm sitting on 132 rare wildcards and 82 mythics and those numbers just seem to keep going up.

I'm looking for some advice on a deck. To be clear, this isn't a great deck, it's the first deck I tried putting together so there's an attachment and desire to make it work. Also, a lot of it is made out of cards I had already, with me only crafting up to uncommon (trying to save my rares) which is why there's sort of a hodgepodge of cards. code:
The issue I have now is that sometimes it works, but against other decks/non-red decks it can stall in card draw. I was thinking of getting rid of the three Metropolis Angel (2WU, when I attack with creatures with counters on them I draw a card.) First off, it's expensive. Secondly, if I have creatures with counters on them my deck is "working" and card draw isn't necessarily urgent. Thirdly, it's a 3/1 flying creature for 4 mana, with no big upside for me. I was thinking of going with Wedding Announcement. I know, transformed, it only gives +1/+1 and not a +1/+1 counter, which isn't ideal. But if I attack with two creatures I draw a card, and I would have two attacking creatures a fair amount of time. Not always, but a good amount of the time. Otherwise I'm getting a chump blocker instead of the extra card. More likely, for me, is Winged Portent. I'd often have two creatures with flying out, and 1UU I can pay for an extra two cards if I've stalled seems OK. One card isn't great but a break-glass type thing, more than two cards and I'm doing well. Anyone have advice on this? I've been stuck not getting the cards I need to make the deck work a few times, and I feel card draw can work for me. This would also be the first time I spend rare wildcards, and like I said, I don't want to spend many of them, but equally I'd like to do better with this deck as it's my first one.

I think replacing the Swooping Lookouts with Angelic Overseers would be an upgrade. They actually attack for something, they cantrip, maybe you live the dream and have Giada in play. EDIT: Also depending on how you feel like you're getting run over, planar disruption is better than mesmerizing dose. Shuts down planeswalkers and activated abilities, less color intensive, more mana efficient. You do lose the proliferate, but I think the pros outweigh the con. If you're committed to spending wildcards, just going all in on making a WU angels deck is probably the best way forward, but that means removing the thrumming birds (which you might be attached to!) and spending 3x rares on Giada, which that probably isn't getting too much play outside of your for funsies deck. The underlying problem is that a lot of very good Angel support went away with Kaldheim. Wedding Announcement is a standard all-star and could be reused if you change decks, but its on the hook for rotation this fall. Seachrome Coast would be a great (if unsexy) craft. No matter what version of this deck you end up at, you want to be assertive, so your ETB tapped lands are probably an outsize problem. The Coast won't rotate for a while, and having a mana base in your collection is always nice. Boxman fucked around with this message at 13:47 on Feb 14, 2023 |

If you run homestead courage and blue mana, I can't imagine not running stormchaser drake. i am assuming you don't play steel seraph because you want to save on wildcards. It probably would be the best craft for that deck.

Toxic is also a really parasitic ability. If you want to kill someone with poison, you're pretty much locked into using cards from ONE plus Fynn and technically Ajani. And there are a lots of better cards that you just can't use. There are also some more proliferate cards, but there weren't really any decks proliferating before ONE, and nothing in ONE is strong enough to start a viable new archetype yet. Except maybe rotpriest combo, but there's not enough tutors to run a combo based off a single creature in standard, and it requires so much more setup than greasefang in explorer.

blue timewasting decks dont have to run any creatures anymore, they can run prologue to phyresis and a few proliferate effects alongside all their card draw and counters. i'm not sure that's stronger than haughty djinn/tolarian terror, but it's an option the deck that makes primary use of new mechanics that most scares me is simic venerated rotpriest, which can win by poison extremely quickly if everything falls into place then there's a few key mythics/rares that are improving existing decks, like phyrexian annihilator making urborg reanimate decks scarier, or tyrranax rex being arguably scarier than titan of industry to cheat into play

Edit: started writing and got distracted It's not great but the fynn deathtouch deck got an upgrade with the cheap toxic+deathtouch creatures and maybe a toxic+trample curve topper. It won't be setting the world on fire but might be interesting.

I'm looking forward to the rotation even though I'll definitely miss Kamigawa. Most meta decks involve a crapload of rares and mythics from soon-to-rotate sets and I don't wanna craft em and I'm hoping some of my new cards will become relevant post rotation. I remember reading somewhere that red mono was going to be invalidated this set and instead seems like basically the same red lists with nothing new have the same high winrates.

Then they played Curse of Surveillance... But my Gavony Trapper held the fort! And I drew the perfect counter: I flooded like a maniac but at least I eventually drew Foul Play to steal Dennick thus.
