I don't know how you could watch Volk vs Islam and come to any conclusion except that Volk is #1 pfp. How good his performance was depends a lot on how Islam's next few fights go though.

It's interesting to me how much of Islam's dominance particularly in terms of ground game decision making depends on Khabib being in the corner screaming concise instructions on what to do next

I don't think that was it. Volk was really strong and slipping away from any kind of control. Islam wasn't one step ahead and simply scrambling to counter every position improvement Volk made.

Also I imagine that with Volk being so short and with a tiny neck makes takedowns and chokes that much easier to defend.

I imagine the kind of upper body wrestling Islam uses is less effective against a shirt guy with Rigby legs too. But for sure he has a comfort level getting talked through positions by Khabib.

Could be that Khabob's instructions would've gotten him that one step ahead though, if he was there, you know? We'll probably never actually find out though. Was Javier even there? I don't remember.

I wonder if its part of the language barrier - Islam speaks pretty good english but I wonder if when you're in the stress of a title fight he doesn't pick up technical instruction super well in his second language and perfers one of his crew give the instructions.

I think it's more that Javier comes from a kickboxing background and just doesn't have the same immediate understanding of the ground game that Khabib does, though it could be a little of both.

I think most fans just don't understand what "effective grappling" is or that it's weighted equally to striking.

I personally think of it this way Volk won the fight but he lost more rounds.

Its hard for people to reconcile.

I'll rewatch the fight sober because really only rounds 2 and 3 are contentious. 1, 4 and 5 were clear cut.

I dont disagree with Islam being given the win and it's not a robbery or anything, it was just a loving great fight.

This was fun as gently caress and thank you for doing it. As chaotic and ill-informed as the threads were, I absolutely miss MMA being hot enough that there were people who knew absolutely nothing about it posting about it anyway. We're almost all crusty veterans now.

COPE 27 posted:

I genuinely think this is becoming a big problem in MMA right now. The rules were changed to deemphasize scoring positional control in favor of damage (which I don't feel great about because it seems much more about promotional pressure for stand and bang than the health of the sport but it's already done so whatever), but the way the new rules were written, and the way they are being interpreted by the commentary teams and promoters who drive fan opinion, are all contributing to a sense that effective grappling ONLY matters if you're finishing the fight or doing damage. We're barely a week removed from a fight in Caldwell/Mikhailov where commentary was openly wondering if Darrion Caldwell holding back control and repeatedly threatening rear naked chokes was going to be enough to win a round when Nikita Mikhailov was landing hammerfists while in back control, and they were actually right, which is insane.

It is at this point arguable that effective grappling ISN'T weighted equally to striking anymore, and that is a loving issue.

It's just a shame that being on somebody's back doing a reverse fitching while an angry gremlin punches you over his shoulder repeatedly is considered winning.

Hopefully Islam fights Poirier next so we can put Volk in context at 155.

So turns out one of Schaub's podcast producers or whatever nicknamed BGL (Big Gay Lion) had a falling out and did an AMA on Reddit and um...some interesting stuff was revealed.

quote:

Q - Do people show Brendan the memes that get made about him on here? Has he ever legitimately cried after watching any Changs content?

BGL - No he’s legitimately highly sensitive about almost anything negative. If you did send it to him because you didn’t know better, he would be passive aggressive or say something about how he doesn’t pay attention to that stuff cuz it’s all losers he’s better than. He just doesn’t court any sort of criticism constructive or not. Bbbbeast of a professional

quote:

Q - Can you elaborate on the lying about money thing?

BGL - Yes

- 1) he took me off thicccboy payroll one of three sources I was paid from (thiccc, TGH, TFATK) reducing my monthly pay by over $1000 without telling me, but also reprimanded me then later fired me for (in part)not showing up to work on schaub Show which is part of thiccc.

2) various times promised certain independent contract pay like happy hippo ad reads for $1000 a month then later say oooooooh I meant thst was for you and shapel combined so it’s actually $500 a month I mean I don’t even make $1000 a month from happy hippo ad reads (huh?) (also luckily found written proof that contradicts the this reframing)

3) promised 3k tiger thiccc pay a month then later his manager called when I invoiced it and was like ohhhhhh yeah that’s for you AND Jay (who wasn’t really doing much at all for the socials and also $1500 was NEVER mentioned) so there’s a few more but it’s just weird. Also he claimed it was my job to do security for him on the road but did not pay me for the roughly 50 hours a weekend minimum where technically I was on the job. I got no extra money for being on the road but mocks how lovely I am at my “security job” in his act (mark does my security but he’s always on his phone so if you wanna murder me nows your chance!) (you know who’s always on his phone except when he needs narcissistic supply from others around him? BRENDAN. He’s literally jealous of peoples PHONES)

quote:

Q - Can you elaborate on what happened to Tank (a dog Brendan got)

BGL - He gave it back to the breeder- his wife had said ahead of time DONT do this im dead serious don’t bring another huge dog home. She was NOT happy. He was about to surprise her and tiger spilled the beans because he wasn’t getting ready for BJJ class and mom was like why aren’t you getting ready? And he said dad said I can’t but I can’t say why. Brendan actually had the nerve to blame his kid for ruining his little setup “Fuckin tiger blew it goddamnit” I was like dude take some OWNERSHIP FOR FUCKS SAKE

quote:

He’s a covert narcissist - I’d say he’s very scared of confrontation in person and love bombs people with gifts so he seems really nice and might even apologize for specific rear end in a top hat incidents when you first becomes friends. Over time - he’s hostile af in most text exchanges and is very entitled to you getting him stuff “I need dick juice (Cialis)” “I need primo” and each of these cost me $60+ a bottle and he’d ask rudely and not offer to pay and stiff me on poo poo he said he’d pay

There's more, with an allegation of Schaub using this guy to get access to roids etc. but having to parse through it all is a bit of a chore.

I'm guessing this is some kind of "I heard from my cousin's uncle's friend's girlfriend..." kind of situation, even immediately after the fight there was a journalist at the presser asking Islam something along the lines of "I heard you told your corner after the fight that you thought you lost", rumor mill is quick.

the volk/islam fight's at least a good example of pointing out people who think MMA is strictly a fight between people and the dude who got busted up most should lose and if they don't it's bullshit vs people who realise it's a contest where you score points against rules through the medium of punching people and poo poo. i'd never argue the rules and criteria for scoring are even great, but that's what the sport is, not just a punch up.

same reason why people think a close fight can't possibly be a "49-46" or a "4-1" "5-0" and that all close fights have to be "3-2".
it's totally possible to win a fight 50-45 but all of those rounds be razor close things where the defining round winning factor is a single scramble across the entire five minute round. it's quite unlikely that'd be the case. i think there was a josé aldo fight like that? maybe even the UFC 200 one that was posted about recently?

but people also seem to think that if the final round is close as hell/dominant for the fighter who lost the previous 4, that means the other rounds should be re-evaluated.

trying to get that point across to people is an exercise in frustration, so it's not worth trying to make the point.

tl;dr - people fuckin dumb
