this is an absolutely moronic, insulting explanation on several levels... and yet I am tempted to believe it, because of course this dude would be as bad at using the internet as he is at playing videogames. I don't necessarily buy it yet, but I find it entirely plausible that someone once showed him how to use a VPN to get around regional lockouts while in the bahamas, and he never understood how that works so he didn't realize it's completely unnecessary for watching the loving Super Bowl from San Francisco

he is a false millennial, shamefully inept at both gaming and the internet

Much more likely he bought the subscription year(s) ago to watch the NFL in the Bahamas (there is perhaps also a price or feature advantage of the "international" version of Game pass over the "domestic" one?). When travelling back to the USA over time he ended up wanting to use his subscription & it didn't work. Rather than buying the other gamepass, he just installed/ used a VPN. Since then, he doesn't even think about it and just mechanically logs into the VPN to access his game pass when he's in the USA.

did he actually travel to the US that much? I was under the impression that he mostly stayed put in the bahamas because it was considered a more favorable location for him to commit crimes every hour of the day. if he did come back that much, this explanation would paint him equally as stupid imo, because a) where is he staying that doesn't already have a way to watch NFL games and b) he's wasting his time dicking around with a VPN to be a cheapskate about TV subscription plans while embezzling billions of dollars

EricBauman posted:

to be clear, I think the government should assume this explanation is bullshit, revoke his bail and toss him in jail pending trial (they won't do this), at which point I personally would then choose to believe that the explanation was actually true, because that would be the funniest possible outcome

that's really dumb and a stretch of logic when the guy was 100% doing it to try to hide his ongoing efforts to influence witnesses and talk to co-conspirators.

once again, i don't know what blackmail material sam's parents have on the people they "convinced" to be their son's attorneys, but there's no way it's worth it. those lawyers are gonna start offing themselves after the first day of trial when sam tries to clear up all those unfortunate misunderstandings unprompted

If you keep committing crimes while on bail, the prosecutors have to keep delaying the trial until they investigate all of them, so if you keep committing crimes they can never try you

that's like the story of the guy sentenced to be executed without knowing the date, who logicked himself into believing that the execution could never actually happen. he was very surprised on the morning they came for him.
