I stand by my diagnosis. Sims 3 was better than 2, but the micro-pricing was an abomination worthy of, well, EA. I think that someone totalled it up, and to own every expansion and official store item in that game, at base price, it would cost about $77,000 US dollars.

Sims 4 was just a step back from 3 in terms of features and objects, no seamless world etc. Don't get me started about character creation.

Her most popular upload is a little 2 bedroom she made for my Sim and Vin Diesel that only uses base game stuff

This is wholesome content.

I think I actually bought The Sims 4, but I couldn't handle the stress of my sims running about urgently talkin Simlish then going to work and not being their best selves. I am a big weepy baby.

The best part is that if you acquired all said DLC and expansions the game ran like garbage so you were encouraged to turn a bunch off. Truly amazing.

Still a fun game though.

I honestly can't remember. I've played 1 more recently than 2 or 3 because I found a complete version of 1, self-installing, on an abandonware site. I still have my discs, but I'm not going to the trouble of installing it 2001-style.

Sims 1 is... difficult to play without cheats.

What I recall is Sims 3 allowing the player to put any pattern on any item, which SIms 4 took away. Also the fully integrated world thing.

I say this as the lightest "to be fair" ever because I'm exactly the kind of weird brained fool to want to have access to everything in the Sims 3 I possibly can (RIP Katy Perry pack :v:) but at least there's some kind of line to be drawn between the major expansion/stuff pack content (even if some of them are truly dire poo poo like the Diesel pack) and the in-game store. Sort of like the difference between buying every single WoW expack at launch over the entire game's lifetime vs. buying every single premium mount or whatever other stupid crap Blizzard sells on the side.

When there's a sale you can get all the separate expansions and packs and etc. for the Sims 3 for about $100~ which is still a lot but puts it into the same bracket as something like Crusader Kings where if you're into it, you're into it. But owning everything from the in-game shop, dear lord... And lol if the margin between the retail stuff and the in-game stuff really is that insanely vast.

As I understand it, The Sims 4 was originally intended as an online multiplayer game, ala The Sims Online. However, it turns out the end result was not fun to actually play at all, and also SimCity 2013 happened and completely poisoned any chance of the idea working out, so they scrapped it and quickly built a more traditional single player game with the assets.

Not the worst disaster, but fair to say it was pretty lightweight at launch!

I defer to your expertise. As I said, I haven't played 3 for years, and I played 2 last year for about 2 hours. I did play Sims 1 for a few robust days last summer. Sims 1 is one of those games where, years later, one can see why it was so beloved, but one can also see how 2 and 3 surpassed it.

I am with you, John. I'm a completionist type who wants everything, but we are in the era of piss-taking levels of DLC due to corporate greed and bad industry practices. Sims 1 had 8 expansions, including the base game, each of which was about £30. Expansions were released about twice a year over a period of three years, which was doable for those of us who want All The Things. Sims 2 had 19! expansions and stuff packs (again, including the base game) released in just 3 years. Sims 3 had 22 expansion and stuff packs released over just 3 and a half years PLUS the $77,000 in store content. I bought every bit of 2, but 3 was when I fully realised that they had hit piss-taking levels - that's when I stop buying games and start 'acquiring' games.

At least in the case of 2 and 3, the core gameplay experience was better, but Sims 4 is a worse game than 3 and has about 28 expansions & packs over 8 years with no end in sight. I know that some twat is going to say 'you don't have to buy all of that', and that's not the bloody point. We don't have to play games at all - they are a pointless exercise wherein we waste away the hours until the grave. I've simply come to the point where, if a game has tons of expansion content, I just don't bother. Sims 4 is a great example, but also the aforementioned Crusader Kings, Cities Skylines, Train Simulator and the like.

THE BAR posted:

How dare you remind me of that. I remember having to marry in-game so that my very outgoing/nice wife could socialise. There were no days off in Sims 1 and a sim could only miss one day of work; two missed days in a row and it was the sack. One couldn't realistically just go to work every other day, either, because the postman would bring bills every three days and they were massive.

Needing friends to advance professionally is utterly unrealistic. I have no friends in real life and I've also accomplished nothing, but i'm sure that that's just a coincidence. I also recall that, at level 9 or 10 of a career, there would inevitably be a random event where the Sim would, through some utter contrivance, end up much lower in rank and in entirely different career path. The devs didn't want top-level players to get complacent, I suppose.

I hadn't thought about this in years, but you are correct - I remember Sims Online now. As someone who firmly believes in the principle of 'multiplayer ruins everything', that explains a great deal about Sims 4 shortcomings.

if that list of content warnings puts you off, i do want to stress that it's not an edgy game at all. it can be dark and there's some absolutely striking things in it, but i'd call it on the less dark side of yume nikki (for example)

I understand. See what I said about expansions and whatnot. If Sims 1 and its 8 installments (7 expansions + base game) are overwhelming for you, then Sims 4 with its several times that is certainly going to be much too much.

The Sims 4 base is pretty much all you need, though.

I’ve heard Seasons, Pets and the Supernatural packs are good, and that seems like enough. I haven’t bought any DLC for it.

I think the Personal Interests thing can be overwhelming if you do something that goes against your interests in-game. If you like making your sim go out and party or be an artist, then trying to fulfill a Sim with Business Interests or a Sim that constantly wants to buy things, sucks. You can choose it in character design or you can take a potion (I think) to recalibrate them.

I skipped Sim 3, Sims 2 is my favorite, but Sim 4 is really fun. I’ve put in 40 hours across PC and PS5.

While Sims 3 has a bunch of stuff 4 is missing, I can't really go back to it. The multitasking added in 4 is a part of it, but mainly because 3 was a horrifying mess of bugs that required multiple mods and fixed world maps to not devolve into a hitching laggy trash fire immediately and even then EA still warned people not to enable too many expansion packs at once because their game couldn't handle it.

Oh of course but even with all the NRaas mods and a bunch of time tweaking them to the right settings, it was still only a matter of time in my experience until poo poo fell apart with a given saved game. The Sims 3 was just deep down busted if you added all or almost all the expansions.
