The only appropriate death for John Wick by now would be if the High Table launched a nuclear missile at him and he detonates it by shooting it in the warhead.

Yeah not a huge fan of super-long runtimes either. Some movies can justify it but it's pretty difficult to pull off.

Been watching a lot of lovely chinese direct to video action movies lately. The best thing about them is that almost all of them are all less than 90 minutes long. The bad thing is they vary wildly in quality. Here are three worth your time. English subs either hard printed or available through youtube.

Yeah some films justify going 2 hours and over but it's still so mindblowingly horrible that we live in an era where the stupidest loving movies are regularly 120 min and over. Like whatever random action blockbusters and so much comic book bullshit. It's insanity. Like, Jungle Cruise is loving 127 minutes and I haven't seen it but I'm pretty sure that should be a crime. Even the ones that are "good". Black Panther 2 is nearly 3 hours??! What the gently caress do these people think they're doing, making a Tarkovsky film??
It makes so much of the older 90 minute action films feel so brisk and efficient. Something like Stone Cold is pretty silly and cheesy, but it doesn't waste your time and it's certainly no stupider than every MCU film ever made.

The longer a movie is the riskier it is in terms of pacing, so in the end yea you have to actually watch the movie to see if it manages to pace things well enough to keep you engaged from beginning to end. The movies that work at 2.5 hours+ usually work because the director rightly decided that the story being told needed that length in order to be told properly and paced properly. Because pacing can have the reverse problem too, where you try to pack so much stuff into 90 minutes that it feels rushed.

But yea these days it seems like they don't really take that risk into account at all, there's just a general "more is better" mentality where they want to cram all of these things into the movie regardless of how it may hurt the overall flow.

Funny thing about that Sniper series is that none of those movies are particularly good, but almost all of them are pretty watchable. I don't think I've been disappointed by any of them

There are a bunch of Chinese movies with Sniper in the (English) title, I have no idea if any of them are related to any other. I don't think so, at least the ones I've seen. But a weird difference between Chinese sniper movies and American ones is that the latter tend to focus on the cunning and sneakiness of the sniper, but the Chinese snipers are just standard martial arts asskickers who happen to occasionally take long shots with a rifle.

rrr is a great illustration of this because the midpoint point is the Big Betrayal but they wisely held back the reason for the betrayal, so then there's a 20 minute short film on backstory that stands alone perfectly and was introduced at just the right time

The idea that no movie deserves 3 hours is dumb. Some do. Most don't.

Having said that, poor pacing and bloat is very real.

I'm concerned about Wick 4 and a fun gimmick doesn't change that.

Yeah, films can be long and still feel like they deserve it, whether it feels its length or not

JW3 was long, felt long, and didn't deserve to be long, which is why I feel only dread about the sequel being 40 minutes longer than even that

MacheteZombie

But think of the value to the consumer. A ticket is like $12, so more run time means you're getting more film for your dollar. It's really a win-win for customers and filmmakers.

3 hour movies need intermissions

John Wick 4 has how to do this easily figured out by just having 10 minute montages of John Wick reloading all the guns

Snowman_McK

The first John Wick film is some arty foreign film called 'my body's tears pass through my feet' or something and it's really good and also has a couple of surprisingly long and graphic sex scenes. The sequels are where some producer got hold of the sequel rights, figured the sex scenes were what sold and just structured the whole thing around the sex scenes.

They're action porn at this point. They feature some of the absolute best action getting filmed at the moment (can we put together a list of the films that have tried and failed to emulate their action style? Extraction top of the list) but the story is just cocktail napkin notes in between amazing shots of locations and elaborate gun fights. They have classic level action, but they're not classic action films. John Wick goes to the desert in the third one because of a dream Keanu had.

On the 'clumsily made but top tier action' Hydra, the japanese film, is pretty loving cool. Terrible film, just amateurishly made, but the two major action set pieces are loving great and really unique.

I really don't feel like the story is cocktail napkin notes. I feel like it's a homebrew Vampire: The Masquerade campaign and the GM is unsuccessfully trying to sell a lot of build up and it's not working.

What new faction never mentioned before will be gunning (literally) for John? What pointless court machinations and protocols will John be bound by? Who will be the new vaguely androgynous but still attractive henchperson? What sort of visually interesting environment will the final battle take place in? What old friend will be forced to deliver cryptic warnings before handing John an exotic weapon and a few words of encouragement? Who knows? Who cares? The first time Keanu hits a gorgeous Seoi-nage I'll be hooting and hollering with the rest of you.

In a 3 hour John Wick movie featuring Donnie Yen I better get like a solid 15-20 minutes of Donnie Yen action. If I find out they brought in Donnie Yen to do like one 2 minute intro scene and then a 5 minute showdown with Wick at the end I'm gonna be annoyed.
