Until the IT team was running upgraded ethernet infrastructure over the summer, and found the thing. If another group's supervisor hadn't come by while we were doing the work, we would have just shoved it back in place, but once building management knew where it was, welp.

The only hard part was remembering to add the filters back before calling for service. Very handy skill through college up until the mid 2000’s. It's because rather than buying up the spunoff stations outright, Sinclair financed the acquisition through extreme debt ($1.4B in their own money, $1B from other partners, $8.2B in debt) and saddled the newly created Diamond Sports subsidiary with that debt. They went under primarily/entirely because of the interest. Three cheers for leveraged buyouts. Bally's was a sponsorship deal more than anything, a desperate grasp hoping that the regulatory environment would create synergies that haven't come about yet and are unlikely to ever do so.

The big gambling companies are all throwing a lot of money at advertising and getting people hooked because the next step is "iGaming." Which is basically just full blown casino games but online. So you can play slots from your home PC or whatever.

Is there any thought about espn taking over most major college sports rights killing RSNs? Like I remember FS NY would show random pac 10 basketball games at like 10 or 11 after the local games were done. Or other leagues when there wasn’t a local game at 7pm. Back before the ACC network when Syracuse would have a couple games a year on the local CW from the acc syndication package my friend that worked for Sinclair said that local ads were a bidding war basically and they had to give first shot at the lawyers and car salesmen that spent a ton of money all year Like I’m sure fox sports Carolina would have multiple NC/SC teams playing every week, and back when the conferences were smaller you cared about what the other 9-11 teams were doing so you would watch those games randomly. But if the hornets or hurricanes aren’t playing what the hell are they going to put on? Just some national live highlights show that probably doesn’t have very high advertising rates?

A lot of the damage was done by the conference tv networks (which I guess would basically be ESPN in the case of the ACC and SEC) but also Fox Sports 1 (& 2) launching which became a natural home for a lot of those random non-marquee Saturday afternoon and evening games. 10+ years ago the RSNs were one of the only places for those games. But honestly the RSNs still have a ton of content. 162 baseball games, 82 basketball games, 82 hockey games. I know there’s some overlap there and not every single game is televised all the time, but that’s essentially 326 easy programming choices that are the bread and butter of the RSNs. What really killed the RSNs is cord cutting since cable companies were forced to put RSNs on the basic tier for a long long time so they were basically getting money from the huge portion of the population that doesn’t watch those games on a daily basis. Once that golden goose was gone, they were never gonna rebound.

So whats the worst case scenario if Ballys dies abruptly here? Obviously any team on the RSN will lose money. But then presumably they will cease broadcasting as well? Would the given league have to immediately step in? They already skipped a payment right?

It's unlikely they would just shut off the networks as they have revenue coming in, so in the case of bankruptcy they'd either keep things going with a skeleton crew or worst case they'd get a court ordered overseer to step in. Bankruptcy is just a process to handle existing debts, it doesn't mean the company disappears into the night or anything.

I understand the way bankruptcy works I just meant more if they don't find a buyer and then they are unable to pay the RSN crews I highly doubt they will go to work out of the goodness of their hearts. I missed that Mandfred had talked about it. I saw some tweet last week that the NHL was having a meeting to discuss the RSN situation. It's a pretty wild situation.
