for me a lot of song structure poo poo i do is like, loud parts have extended chords and riffs and stuff strummed, and then quieter parts are just playing an interval muted as the melody elaborates

New guitar arrived!

Needed a little work as the control knobs aren't properly centred and one was rubbing against the lacquer while another was twisting as I turned it, but that's all fixed. The tone pot doesn't do very much, particularly to the neck pickup. It's a bit more noticeable on the bridge but not by much. I'll contact Thomann tomorrow and see if that's normal. Otherwise it's great as it's lighter than my Washburn, the smaller scale lets me make stretches i couldn't quite manage before and generally it's a lovely guitar.

They may have installed the wrong cap value. Take a peak at the control cavity: should be 500k pots and 0.047uF cap. If they used a 0.022 it will do what you describe.

The pots don't have anything on them other than "made in Korea". This is a photo i took of the pot earlier, I'll check the cap tomorrow.

If its new, just send back to thomann or get a partial refund. Nothing majorly wrong, but at that price point it's a ballache to have to take it to a tech and thomann have a very lenient return policy on HBs.

I think they're largely very capable instruments for the price and for how much is available, and they're great building blocks if you want something that is very modifiable.

Yeah I’ve heard QC across the board had fallen off with the amount of stuff companies have to get out the door. It doesn’t affect me because of how I play but I’m pretty sure both my guitars have fret sprout.

They've had a couple pretty big misses in the youtube reviews recently; in particular KDH got a stinker that Thomann said was normal and Spectre Sound Studios basically discovered that for their low-end ($100-200) guitars with black hardware, they used non-conductive black paint on all the hardware, meaning nothing is grounded properly so it buzzes like all gently caress unless you scrape away a bunch of paint. AFAIK they're still selling them like that. They're still really, really good for the price though.

Lmao all they had to do was not paint the bottom of the bridge. Also that KDH microphonic pickup is hilarious. I don’t even think non-potted pickups are normally that microphonic.

I got a Jr in Worn Brown second hand and it's been a solid mod platform.

Frets were fine, neck is nice, nut was loose so needed a dab of glue but that might have been the last guy. Finish is thin but looks really good. Fretboard is clearly stained darker and they haven't covered the side angles so that's a little messy if we're picking. The Badass style bridge is too tall for the neck angle so I switched out a cheap lightning bar I had sat around which I would have done anyway.

Electronically the P90 was surprisingly beefy and the wiring was the neatest I've seen in a while; they even tidied up the loose wire with a cable tie. Full size pots.

Overall I wouldn't recommend if you aren't happy with doing your own setup but if you want a Jr shaped object for not a lot of dough I'd recommend it over most stuff. If you can track down a Vintage V120 they're not much more and come with way better hardware (also in classic white finish which is better sounding).

We have some Vintage brand guitars at work for testing and they are really good. The Les Paul is better than most Les Pauls I’ve played.

Especially if you’re planning on upgrading it anyway, I’d really urge you to reconsider - just understand that a $125 guitar is probably going to be pretty poo poo even if it’s “really good for the price”, the most important parts - the neck and frets - tend to be in good shape even if there are problems with the hardware, and the upper end of the line, above like $300 or so, seems to have way fewer QC issues than the real low end models.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly but I wouldn't hedge my bets on fretwork being good on a cheap guitar in my experience. I actually returned a Harley Benton because the frets were janky as hell and unlevel(tested with a straight edge and rocker and everything) to the point it felt like crap to play. One of the main reasons I go with Korean/Japan made guitars is I've been more consistently able to slam the action low on them.

A Vintage V624 was my first guitar! I still play it a lot, though the frets are basically razor blades in my dry Minnesota winter basement. Biggest dislike is having to say "no no, Vintage brand, it's a brand called 'Vintage,' oh nevermind" every time I talk about it.

you should definitely do this, anybody who tells you not to is a coward

e: I just had my first experience with terrible frets. The first guitar I ever bought was one of those horrible epiphone les paul specials they sell to suckers and even the frets on it were flat and smooth and fine. This Jackson dinky 7 string I got was the first time I ever felt a fret be scratchy and rough and actually get in the way of bending notes. Who knew! I got some fret erasers but I'm waiting to take off the strings until the tuners and pickups come in and that could be months from now.

I looked at how you’d go about doing it and I think the answer is to buy an Ibanez or a Jackson.
