SMS is by far the worst form of MFA but it’s also really hard to lose. As long as you have a phone, you can receive text pins. The problem is texts cost money and even at fractions of a penny it’s probably costing Twitter a fortune. International texts can be orders of magnitude more expensive. App based MFA is much better security wise but requires users to not gently caress up and lose their phones without backing up their TOTP codes. My work wanted me to start forcing customers to “upgrade” to TOTP and we found that those customers contacted support 10x as often and support calls/processes to reset MFA are expensive because if you don’t properly vet those requests you might as well not have MFA. Take away SMS mfa and twitter users are gonna lose access to their accounts like crazy I guarantee it.

Granted I didn't remember to write them down because something that cool will stick in the brain meat for certain. The objectively funniest thing here would be if Elon had actually uncovered massive SMS toll fraud by various telcos. e: though much more likely any amount of "Scam SMS" twitter is complaining about was from hackers trying to comprimise people's accounts and running into 2FA stopping them from doing it (which Elon is now going to turn off). related question, but is there a reason just about all banks still use sms 2fa instead of allowing an any totp app? is it just good old corp glacial change? also why the gently caress does Chase have 8 digits. or why does Steam do an alphanum?

Yeah, just use Google or Apple authenticator app instead of SMS auth. This is dumb but it should have no actual tangible effect on any Twitter user with a smartphone who actually cares about securing their account.
