They had Hulk Hogan come out at the start and talk up how great RAW was at the beginning, which is also the 30th anniversary of the year he went to WCW.

gbs but from 2004 posted:

dang jay briscoe died

Tonight's Dynamite is going to have a tribute match for Jay, with his brother Mark taking on Jay Lethal. That we're actually getting this is kind of a big deal, albeit tragic as hell.

See, back when AEW was starting, guys like Tony Khan and the Young Bucks wanted the Briscoes on the roster immediately. They are one of the best tag teams in wrestling history, so of course they wanted them on the ground floor. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. was very strict about how they did not want the Briscoes featured on TV in any way.

As for why? Well, years ago, Jay Briscoe said some really homophobic stuff on social media and I think in in-ring promos. Mainly what amounted to, "I will kill you if you tell my children that homosexuality is okay." He later tried to backtrack by saying he was trying to play heel and went too far, but... dude was a face at the time. At the very least, this killed any chances the Briscoes had at getting signed in WWE back when NXT was sucking the indies dry.

Things change, of course. Jay made many apologies over the years and insisted that he no longer held those beliefs. Practically everyone in the wrestling community backed him up, including queer wrestlers, claiming that Jay was on the level and no longer the man who said that hateful poo poo. Warner Bros. did not care and simply did not want the redneck boys with missing teeth and a history of homophobia representing the product. Khan pushed for them many times and was constantly stonewalled.

It was especially an issue after Tony Khan bought Ring of Honor. While ROH talent was infamously taking up AEW TV time when the AEW roster was bloated as is, the Briscoes were relegated to the ROH PPVs and maybe some promos on the AEW YouTube channel. Even though they were doing an insane trilogy of matches against FTR for the ROH tag titles on PPV, they never did any run-ins or anything to build on it. At least, not on Dynamite or Rampage.

And hey, it's understandable. I get why the network would be so reluctant. Up to a point.

So last Tuesday, Jay Briscoe died in a car accident because the driver of the other car went in the wrong lane and was driving in the opposite direction. It was a major tragedy and there was a lot of kind words said by so many wrestlers and people in the industry. One night later, other than some wrestlers wearing black armbands, the most AEW Dynamite had was a memorial image at the very beginning. Apparently that was all Warner would allow them! The body was still warm and Warner still wouldn't allow any tribute stuff on-air.

Naturally, this pissed people off because of the hypocrisy. Not just everything involving Ezra Miller and the Flash movie, but the fact that Dynamite was followed by a Power Slap show hosted by Dana White, who was fresh off of slapping his wife in public. Considering the backlash and presumably because Power Slap's debut episode ate poo poo in the ratings, Tony Khan was able to fight his way to getting that Mark Briscoe match on TV.

He's also apparently taking care of Jay's family financially, which if true, good on him.

There's currently a shirt up for sale with proceeds going to Jay's family, and he did right by Brodie Lee's family in the wake of his passing so I trust he will here.

$9B is pretty reasonable for a company that generates $1B per year. Why are traditional media companies not interested? Is it all the sexual misconduct, unstable drug addicts, domestic abuse, and blood money? Because that's never stopped a corporate acquisition before.

because buying the wwe isn't buying a tv show or a movie studio, it's buying the requirement to need to host hundreds of shows internationally at a myriad of venues (that all likely require individual negotiation)

one pandemic, for example, ruins that investment

you'd have to be pretty stupid to buy the wwe

They posted record profits during the pandemic because they weren't touring. The actual house shows that aren't PPVs are almost revenue neutral, they do it because it advertises the product.

Guesses:

- Everyone still remembers how much money TBS lost on WCW and doesn't want to get involved without an exec who already knows wrestling that can manage it
- Something to do with tv unions and directly taking on a bunch of sketchy wwe wrestler contracts maybe?
- WWE is attaching terms that we don't know about to the deal (like "Vince remains as CEO and has ultimate firing and hiring decisions")
- All the big media companies are laying off and slashing projects. WWE just picked a bad time to go on sale for anyone but Saudi investment fund or possibly deranged billionaires like Musk

Wrestling still hasn't shaken off it's carnie outlaw mudshow veneer in the eyes of a lot of people, think about how incredulous people were when Dave Bautista or John Cena started acting or even how hard it is for wrestlers to apply for SAG cards.

THis is something that permeates wrestling at every level (source: work/train with a local indie) and WWE barely keeps it's head above it on account of that $1B it generates.

This is also a good shout, the death of WCW was an absolutely apocalyptic end to a company that I don't think we've seen since.
