I bought a set of Ali Express Epi humbuckers I’m going to throw in my original first guitar Affinity Strat once I get another 30 bucks for the new pick guard so my kid can mess around with it/so I can put it in weird tunings. I just hope it doesn’t need a refret soon because it looks a little more played than I remember it being.

Hey LG not sure if you've sorted your grip problem from 2 pages ago but please try lowering your strap so your elbow isn't in a complete dork tendon destroying position. The way your hand sits, you're going to excel with your rig a bit lower. This is incredibly counter intuitive but give it a try - find your low point for playing guitar standing up, and then lower your strap an inch. It's going to force you to change your ergonomics and if you're like me this will unfuck your left wrist position

Harley Benton dropped off for return back to Thomann. Now to decide what to replace it with. Leaning Revstar at the moment, although the Gretsch G5222 is mighty fine looking too.

Revstar would be at the top of my list for midrange HH guitars to check out right now. They're so cool.

Sorry to hear the HB was a dud. You can't go wrong with either of those two at least so go with your heart on that one.

I'd also be on team revstar just because they're contoured and appear to be slightly lighter overall, and the aesthetic is incredible. They also seem to go out of stock far more often and I've seen the prices already start to creep up. They came into market clearly underpriced for the demand.

Yeah I had another look at the blue Revstar just does things to my eyeballs that the Gretsch doesn't. Right, Revstar it is but do I stretch to the Standard to get P90s or stick to the Element? As a total beginner I worry the Standard has features that are largely wasted on me, but I guess I won't always be a beginner.

e: or get the HH Standard, there's a B stock at a decent discount available.

What's some cool usage of P90s? I thought I never cared for them and then I realized I couldn't name much that's been played with them - besides anything on a Casino from The Beatles.

Isn’t most noodly emo P90s? Also Dinosaur Jr. and a ton of Indy music.

Edit: I guess Jazzmaster pickups aren’t technically p90s.

Always the first thing I think of with a P90. Roll off the volume and they clean up nicely, too.

£100 off and I haven't tried to knock it lower yet. Just can't decide whether to go for the P90 version as I haven't the experience to make the call. I guess I can get this and either swap P90s in later, or sell it for one with P90s at some point.

p90s are pretty situational in my experience - my reverend has one and it's neat for certain uses but also pretty noisey... I'm 90% humbucker. Down the line you could always add a humbucker-sized p90 to the neck if you find you need it but the 2 and 4 switching options on the standard and the dry switch should give you plenty of dirty/chimey.

Standard also has a maple cap and improved electronics. It's a more complete instrument.

£100 off is already a pretty good discount for what you can find'em on the used market - if you can talk'em down more all the better.

A few cosmetic dings on the side, that you won't even see while playing, is ideal for B-stock, IMO.

Looking at the specs for the Revstar Element vs Standard, there are some notable differences.
https://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/guitars_basses/el_guitars/rs_2022/specs.html#product-tabs

The cheaper element doesn't have stainless steel frets, so I would presume they are nickel alloy that would wear out eventually.
Cheaper guitar doesn't have carbon reinforcement rods in the neck, but that probably doesn't matter a lot if you don't live somewhere with big temperature/humidity swings.
No gig bag with the cheaper guitar (according to specs), so you'd need to figure out a case solution on your own.

P90 vs. Humbucker is probably a matter of taste, and Humbuckers are available in the expensive trims as well. The P90s could be slightly more susceptible to 60 50 cycle hum from nearby alternating current utility power, but can be a bit more versatile/interesting.

There are bound to be P90 vs Humbucker comparison videos all over YouTube. Humbuckers were invented as an upgrade/replacement to P90s in a time when utility wiring was probably a lot more noisy.

Good Soldier Svejk

I didn't even know about the stainless steel frets. That's drat near worth the price difference by itself.

Element has a 3 way switch with a Dry switch push/pull vs Standard which has a 5 way switch with out of phase effects on the 2 and 4, plus a Focus switch push/pull rather than the dry switch. Some reviewers say the Dry works better with the HH setup and the Focus better with the P90s but it's all theory to me.

Good Soldier Svejk
Jul 5, 2010

I guess it comes down to what style you think you're after, too.
Reviews suggest the HH element is more suited to chugga chugga metal, and the HH standard is more classic rock/indie/jazzy

I can't really speak to p90s. I know they will rock and get dirty but you will probably want a noise gate if you're going to push them.

At the moment I won't be playing any particular style, so I just want something to learn with. Later on its likely to be rock and metal but I'll play anything really, and I quite like drippy surf rock stuff.

VVV HH standard it is then. I already have a decent gig bag so ai can sell the Yamaha one and bring the cost down even more. I sent an offer but the shop is closed now so it'll be Monday before I hear back.

All signs point to the standard for you, from my perspective. The stainless steel frets and carbon fiber rods in the neck mean once it's set up to your liking, you'll never have to worry about it again most likely. That's a god send that's giving me guitar envy just thinking about. Normal guitars will shift with temperature or the frets will wear down and that's a pain to deal with.

Humbuckers over P90s for starting out makes a ton of sense to me, too. A P90 can do a lot of things too but you'll need to know your amps and noise gates and stuff and if you get interference that can be very frustrating starting out.
