Brominated vegetable oil? Used to keep citrus flavouring in suspension in soft drinks, I though it's been phased out, though.

I was thinking Sunny D had that too, looks it does have canola oil pretty low on the ingredients list. Turns out it also has a half dozen different types of fruit juice concentrates too, which surprised me because I always thought it tasted like the most ridiculously artificial "juice" drink in existence.

That's because fresh squeezed juice doesn't travel well and turns into bitter brown sludge. In order to bottle it and keep it on the shelves for weeks it has to be treated.

Commercial orange juice with a long shelf life is made by pasteurizing the juice and removing the oxygen from it. This removes much of the taste, necessitating the later addition of a flavor pack, generally made from orange products.

I imagine there might also be a difference in the cultivars used for large-scale juicing and the regular stuff you find in the grocery store. The whole citrus family is a mess of agricultural engineering.

Yeah, that's what I was gonna say, if it came out like the packaging it'd be great, but I'm not surprised at the reality.

A really fun quick book about oranges is Oranges by John McPhee. https://books.google.com/books/about/Oranges.html?id=SeMDDAA3g4MC&source=kp_book_description

quote:

A classic of reportage, Oranges was first conceived as a short magazine article about oranges and orange juice, but the author kept encountering so much irresistible information that he eventually found that he had in fact written a book. It contains sketches of orange growers, orange botanists, orange pickers, orange packers, early settlers on Florida's Indian River, the first orange barons, modern concentrate makers, and a fascinating profile of Ben Hill Griffin of Frostproof, Florida

Hey, that's the county I grew up in (Indian River)! When I was younger there were huge orange groves everywhere, but they've been steadily reduced in size over time due to development. The old grove families are still around though. There's a lot fewer grove stores too, you used to be able to walk in and get fresh-off-the-tree citrus and juice, which are really on a completely different level than your standard supermarket items. There's still some very good OJ brands but most would be hard to find the further you get from the county.

Fun fact, the stadium at UF is named after Ben Hill Griffin. Also, despite the funny name there's nothing interesting in Frostproof.

Canned peaches were like the major treat for some people who grew up in the 50s and 60s, so it makes sense to see them as the centrepiece of recipes from the 70s.
