MOTYC: Kazuchika Okada (C) vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship - NJPW Battle in the Valley 2/18 I wake up in the morning and hear a noise coming from the bathroom. Bobby Ewing is in the shower and lovingly explains to me that the last 3 years didn't actually happen, there was no COVID, and Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada just put on another incredible loving wrestling match. I weep with relief. This may actually be their weakest singles match, but the baseline level between these two is just so high. When the 20 minute call came I was astounded because I legit thought it had been about 7 minutes at that point. Loved all the little counters and reversals they had thanks to their intimate knowledge of each other's offense.

He's really been steadily improving the past year. Honestly, if you're a younger indie worker in Europe or America without a family of your own & you get an opportunity to go long-term to Japan to live in the dojo & wrestle multiple times a week & just dedicate yourself to the craft you should absolutely take it. Look how guys like Francesco Akira in All Japan, Jack Morris in NOAH, Chris Brookes in DDT (to a lesser extent, he was already pretty good) have come in a relatively short time. Even Anthony Greene working in NOAH is a much more solid hand. Ooops, I hit Post too early, back in a second to put in correct links

MOTYC 19th February All Japan Excite Series Night 2 ~ Pro Wrestling Day MANIAx Triple Crown Title Kento Miyahara (c) vs Yuji Nagata Watch this here I am still a big Nagata fan, despite him having been on the backburner in NJPW for a decade. That said, a little incredulous that he was challenging Kento here, but my doubts faded almost right from the off. Sure, he's 54 but he doesn't wrestle like a 54 year old, he's out here taking huge bumps, throwing & eating nasty looking strikes, & delivering exploders on the floor. Can't ask much more than that. There's a segment in this one where there's a slightly silly no-sell exchange with suplexes, but I just cackled madly at it, it was tremendously cool & rad, gently caress your psychology. Right now I'd say this is my #3 match of February so far, with only Kento vs Yuma Aoyagi and Okada vs Takagi above it, it's just a really loving good match that moves along at a heck of a pace. Kento rules, Nagata rules, the crowd are hot, it's great. As I was watching this show & sticking another ***¾ rating down on the spreadsheet, I had the realisation that I probably sound like I'm over-rating All Japan, & maybe I am slightly, but it's only because I'm invested in the roster & where it goes. It's just my gut reaction on watching the show. There's no one I'd rather watch have a big singles match than Kento. There's few young wrestlers I'm more excited to see than Atsuki Aoyagi. For young boys there's nobody I'm more invested in than Inoue & Anzai, & that's despite DG's amazing depth of young talent. There's no other wrestling company where I feel compelled to not just watch every match on every single show but to watch them live if I can & if not then as soon as I can after they happen. And we're just 6 weeks away from my favourite time of the year: Champion Carnival!
