Hi, I'm just starting out with the guitar and I want to play jazz. I read the OP and mu favorite guitarist (Pasquale Grasso) plays a hollow body electric. What's a good hollow body for an absolute beginner

I recommend going semi-hollow to begin with but hollow or semi-hollow the answer is Ibanez artcore models

Well, gently caress. That sucks.

The store with the Revstar would only come down another £15 on the price, so £535 for b stock. I can sell the Yamaha gig bag though and it'll end up being £500 or so, which seems extremely good.

Didja buy it?

check out the George Benson signature Ibanez guitar. https://www.ibanez.com/na/artists/detail/23.html

i'm not an expert in these kinds of guitars, but i'm told that it's the only production guitar that has floating pickups (i.e., they didn't cut a hole in the top to install them) which is supposed to give a better acoustic sound and prevent feedback (which can be a problem in these kinds of guitars).

Yeah I have one of the Ibanez arch tops and it’s really nice. Try to get one that comes with a case, because I cheaped out and got one of the cheaper 500 dollar ones and ended up paying 100 dollars for a case because of it.

I should mention I also considered one Gretsch at this price point and some Epiphones. Also don’t listen to anyone who tells you all jazz musicians only use the neck pickup and to always roll off your tone. If many of those musicians had a bridge pickup at the time they would have probably used it. Many did. I bring this up specifically because I noticed while relearning Jazz that there are many people on YouTube that will give you very direct and in my opinion wrong information. You can even play jazz on most Solidbodies if you want; it is nice to have an arch top for practice without an amp though. Also if you can swing it try flat wound strings to see if you like them, many jazz players used them and I feel like they give your low strings a nice standup bass sort of thunk at the cost of some brightness and sustain.

Edit: A final thing is that Ibanez makes a few small full hollow bodies at the cost of some acoustic volume, but if you are small player they are much more comfortable, some large arch tops and even the small one I have can be a little ergonomically garbage, so keep that in mind too.

I can't argue with the Ibanez suggestion, but if there's a dealbreaker there you can also consider the newer Epiphone Inspired by Gibson line as it's great for the money, comes full size 335 at $599 and smaller-body-still-hollow 339 at $549. The 339 comes in Pelham Blue which is

edit:

Everyone's mentioned the Ibanez/Epiphone/Gretsch/Telecaster options I'd lean toward - I think if you know you are only interested in jazz I'd get a hollow body, otherwise I'd lean toward a semi-hollow or a Tele. Put some thought into your amp also - the Boss Katana is the current price/performance sweet spot for beginners/home players and has a very nice clean tone (as well as being incredibly versatile) for 250.

Seconding this- they've made em a long time so there are plenty of good used ones out there. Any Epi Jazz box is gonna be pretty sweet. I'm also partial to the Ibanez Artcore line like everyone else. If you can stretch your budget a little, Eastman makes some REALLY nice stuff.

(jazz player, probably) ok, let me make sure i've eliminated any and all brightness from this guitar tone.

Hollow body instead of solid, check. Short scale instead of 25.5", check. Flat wound strings, check. Neck pickup instead of bridge, check. Tone knob rolled off, check. OK lets jam (only sounds good to play shell chords and single-note lines for some reason :roflolmao:)

It was the guitar in the rehab centre he was attending, which is jazz as all hell really.

Julian Lage did an entire tour on a telecaster bridge pickup just to see if he could, but he's an unreasonably high bar to set.

I like the saying, "Jazz is whatever the kids say it is."

Most people when they say they want a jazz tone mean they want to sound like Wes, but obviously you can make a lot of jazz without sounding that way. And if you went back in time and gave Wes a Rat, who the heck knows where we'd be nowadays.

Also Wes didn’t roll off his tone knob for every recording he did.

if the idea is to buy this guitar and switch out the pickups at a later time, it's kind of fiddly to rewire a hollow body guitar thru the F holes. i have the hollow body variant of their PRS clone, and i had my luthier do the work of changing out the pickups: https://guitarsgarden.com/collections/ffpr

i'm not really thrilled with the results -- if OP can afford it, i recommend buying something with legit stock pickups!

Many many years ago I went to a guitar teacher and when I asked him about playing jazz and what kind of a gear I should get, the answer was: Take a guitar, play Jazz

Having said that, the Epiphone Joe Pass models are amazing. some 20-odd years ago I had one, and it was amazing.

Nowadays I have an old Ibanez artcore (made in China, circa 2001-ish, and the only thing that was ever wrong with it were stock pickups which were replaced probably 18 years ago to something 'better')

But you definitely don't need a 'Jazz' guitar to play Jazz. All you need is a guitar, two working hands and the desire to play Jazz.

What are you talking about of course you need a guitar for each genre and each alternate tuning, scale length, and pickup combination. Upstairs guitar, bedroom guitar, bathtub guitar. I’m glad my wife doesn’t have an account here, you guys are ruining it for all of us.

it's the home demo for in the garage, so it probably doesn't have a million overdubs or double tracks.

it does kinda just sound like fuzz, in theory, but i find big muffs never really respond the way i want them to. they kinda respond to all notes the same way.

i don't want it to be exactly like that necessarily, because high note chords would almost assuredly sound terrible through it, but it kind of represents a raspy quality i'd like to be able to get more on my dirty sounds.

like, marshall distortion always sounds really "soft" to me, if that makes any sense.

I'm slowly building a collection of hardtail superstrats to have a metal guitar in every tuning from E to B. Got a couple of Fugijen Ibanezes, an ESP E-II, and an Alex Wade LTD so far.

I had two more but I decided I like flatmount bridges like Hipshots a lot more than TOMs so I sold an old Ibanez S with a TOM and whenever I stop being lazy I'm going to sell off an old Jackson Dinky with one also.

The funny thing is I usually just play the ESP and use Archetype Petrucci to detune in the plugin.

I have chased this tone forever and it looks like it’s all just gain from Rivers’ 60-watt Mesa Mk 1 and a Seymour Duncan JB loaded into a Strat. This was used on demos and on the Blue album.
