apparently it also works for all card styles, but I didn't see the stream and don't know if it means you can favorite a style within a printing or if you can go replace your man-making GBS threads-on-toilwt duresses in ONE limited with any of the other arts on arena

No news about what's in, what's out, and if we're getting random extra cards like in Amonkhet

I feel like this is already (mostly) supportable in paper with existing color pie mechanics, so this kinda sucks that we can't get the full cycle in paper

That's definitely Commodore Guff on the one precon. All those precons sound cool. I was just thinking about building Slivers also but most of the good ones are $10+ so this will help.

Commodore Guff needs to be a double-sized card like Big Urza to appropriately capture his power.

It would be interesting in paper with some changes. It would have to work like Memory Jar with cards drawn equal to the damage dealt. But that's way too much downside if your opponent pings it for 1.

One of the other cards that showed is literally just Birthing Pod, except it says seek instead of search. But like, pod decks only have like 1-2 creatures of each cost, so its mostly the same. They're just putting seek and perpetual on random cards because I'm pretty sure its arena devs and not magic R&D making this alchemy bullshit.

Went to my first RCQ over the weekend! I asked another FNM regular if he'd be there, and I didn't really understand the disdain in his voice for "competitive magic."

Now I do! I was doing a Sealed event, my first at REL1. The process to open packs while watching, then recording all the cards opened, then registering the first deck... I understand why it has to be done, because someone would cheat otherwise, still somewhat nerve-wracking and took up the better part of an hour. I was expecting to get trounced, but with a friend playing with me I thought one of us would be lucky enough to land in the top 8 for the draft.

Event was for 32, 27 actually showed up. Almost everyone I interacted with was talented, knowledgeable, and just wanted to play good clean magic. It was a new store for me, just a short drive away. The exception to the talented folks who just wanted to play good clean magic was someone who'd flown in for the event. My friend played against him first and found his style kind of rude and sloppy. The gambler missed a "beginning of combat" trigger just reaching out for creatures and tapping them, which caused some harsh words and bad blood. 30 minutes later, at the end of the 5 bonus turns, my friend was at 1 life. Gambler wanted him to concede and give him the win, because obviously he needed all the points to make the top 8 and clinch this event. My buddy stood firm, partly due to the earlier ugliness of the missed trigger, and recorded the game as a draw.

So that guy was super titled coming into his match with me. That was my only win for the day, aided by him angrily describing his mis-plays out loud (instead of the usual stuff like "Go to combat?"). Anyway, I met a lot of nice folks, made a trade for a card that I've been wanting, and overall impressed with the community.

I'm glad I saw what the competitive scene is like. It's not quite what I want in an event, I was very happy to leave before my doomed match 5 and get back to my usual store for commander night to clear the palate.

Sounds about right. Flying in for an RCQ is insane though lol

How’s Alchemy doing? MTG is a complicated enough game that I don’t feel compelled to learn a whole new variant of each set.

I gotta imagine the whole thing’s confusing to a lot of casual players.

casual players don't really give a poo poo because they don't really need to keep track of multiple versions of cards since the game does that work for them (and generally alchemy+rebalanced cards are a fairly small chunk of the formats alchemy cards are legal in, anyway)

Deceitful and black-hearted, perhaps we are. But we would never go against the Code. Well, perhaps for good reasons. But mostly never.
Alchemy Baldurs Gate was probably a disaster saleswise. (Judging by how many fewer views streamers got playing it at least.) Someone is glad that they decided not to do that again with Lotr.

I never did a purpose-built Alchemy deck so it's just constant surprises of "wait why's that cost 1 more. For _one_ more card????"

The whole thing that made pod so powerful was that you could choose whether you were getting your value card for further podding, your combo card, or a toolbox card to disrupt your opponent or protect yourself. It's very much not "mostly the same".

Having been around a lot of Magic folks, you know the type who's just itching to get back to a poker table and grind? That guy.

Commander's been a blast though. A lot of ONE cards to upgrade my precon, trading for a few more, I finally won a pod. I'd sort of expected it to come sooner rather than later, lots of good cards plagued by bad draws. What really surprised me was another game I didn't win but.. I was the villain. I was ahead, and the rest of the players were focused on taking me down. After a bunch of games getting wiped out by splashy things aimed at other folks, that felt great.

Another "fun" thing Alchemy does is "spellbooks" where some cards make 1 of FIFTEEN other cards (which you can see one at a time in a terrible interface) and as an opponent you're supposed to just be able to loving do something with that information.

it's not that I think they're equivalent myself but it's that I can't articulate a reason why spellbooks bug me that isn't also a problem with tutoring a card or even just drawing a card normally anymore and I'm not sure what even exactly changed about my perspective from what it used to be
