I see Makoto wasn’t invited. That’s fine, Yusuke. She’d probably bog this meeting down with her nerd poo poo.

I imagine that the developers/writers needed to cover the edge case where you would reach this rank in Yusuke's confidant before befriending Makoto and future members, though perhaps, the developers and writers could have created different scenes based on story progression. Imagine reaching this scene when the group has gotten Haru, and the cafe is filled to console Yusuke on the matter.

The SL actually first becomes available on June 18th and you start infiltrating Kaneshiro's Palace on June 19th. I guess you could theoretically reach rank 8 before the Palace deadline, but either way, Makoto is the party by then.

Chapter 108: 8/17-8/18: Take Me To Church (New)

Anon: they blew off akechi lmao

Early Morning

Anon: QUE ES FANTOM THIEF?
Anon: is medjed worse than mafia?
Anon: Go go Phantom Thieves~!
Anon: bet ya 10k the thieves win
Anon: I can’t read English ;_;

The Phantom Thieves will do something about it!
Can they really? We don’t even know who they are.
It’s probably impossible. We’d need some sort of miracle…
If they could do something about it, they’d be gods!

Music: Beneath the Mask (Instrumental Version)

I am considering doing just that in regard to my art. Do you have plans for today? I would like you to take part in that as well, if you are able.
I’m eating now. Maybe I should respond later…

And make sure you wash your plate.
Let’s clean up first. We can respond to that message later. You’re off today, so there’s all sorts of time to respond.

Early Morning → Daytime

Music: Tokyo Emergency

It’s only days until August 21st, the day Medjed will attack, and corporations are scrambling. With no sign of a response from the Phantom Thieves, some suspect they’ve surrendered or ran away.
Huh? We did not run away! And we’ll never surrender! Just watch and see what happens!

(Middle-Aged Office Worker) I got home late last night, and my wife yelled at me since I didn’t tell her where I was…
Ahaha! You do something naughty behind her back? Careful, or the Phantom Thieves might target you!
No, moron. I was just drinking with co-workers. Must you always bring up the Phantom Thieves?

Hey, Ryuji. I know we found out Yamauchi is manipulating the track team for his personal benefit like three months ago, but I’ve been busy. You understand.

Also, I’m not sure we’ve ever, in either LP, initiated a Confidant rank with Ryuji from the arcade. Weird!

So, uh… I’ve been thinkin’ about what to do with the track team… But I realized I’m not the kinda guy to come up with epic plans that can save the day. So, I think I’m gonna do this the one way I know how. Can you come with?

I’ve gotta tell Nakaoka and Takeishi what’s goin’ on with that rear end in a top hat of a teacher… I mean, there’s no way the track team’s gonna make a comeback without them. I know it’s a day off and all, but we’re headin’ over to school. They’ve gotta be there…

Ryuji, it’s not just a day off, it’s summer vacation. This seems like a reach.
It’ll be fiiiiiiiine.

Chariot Rank 8: Part 106

Music: Suspicion

Okay, I see, I see… And when they start kicking the poo poo out of each other, we run away. Good plan.
No! Though… maybe you’ll have to keep them apart while I play my recordin’ of what Yamauchi said at the monja shop.
But I bruise easily!
Suck it up!

Nakaoka!? Wh-What the hell!? Are you guys gonna gang up on me!?

Yes. Get ready to enter a world of pain, motherfucker.
Ignore him. I just wanna talk. Listen to this…
(Yamauchi’s Voice) Gonna manipulate some kids, I’m so smart, blah blah blah

Is this real?
It’s Yamauchi’s voice, ain’t it? And on top of that, poo poo’s gone down just like he said.

…Yamauchi’s right… I always sucked at track… You two always beat me, no matter what I did… How am I supposed to be proud of myself!? My dad always says he’s so proud of me, saying I’d get a track scholarship like he did…
Uh, this is maybe getting a little personal…
That’s the entire reason I went along with Yamauchi! He said if I was the captain, he’d write me a recommendation!
That’s dumb. You’re dumb.

Sh-Shut up! What does a thug like you know!? You couldn’t know how I feel… Nobody does!
Like hell I don’t know! How long were we runnin’ together, huh!? I went through all sorts of poo poo with you!
Sakamoto…

Music: Alleycat

Who’re you livin’ your life for? Your parents? Teachers? Society? Maybe you should stop tryin’ to live for them, and just try livin’ for yourself.

Psst! Ryuji! That’s the exact opposite of the advice you gave to Yusuke literally yesterday!
Uh… poo poo. That’s… uh… oh, whatever. Anyway… Don’t betray your teammates.
You betrayed us by punching Kamoshida, though!
Yeah, well, you guys kinda betrayed him first by not having his back. Also, you guys suck and you deserved it, I hate you all.
……
Fess up, Nakaoka. You knew what Yamauchi was doing, didn’t you? He’s never been interested in track before. But you just let him walk all over you.
I was afraid… that we wouldn’t have a place to belong without him. We wouldn’t have a team…
I used to be afraid of that too. But there’s something freeing about it. I’m more scared of bein’ a crappy person now.
That’s you guys.
Do you think we could be free too?
No.
I know you guys are real pissed about all this, so if you want a punching bag… I’ll take whatever you wanna dish out.
Wait, Ryuji—
Well, if you’re offering…
Don’t mind if we do.

Didn’t think you’d actually do it…
You guys know he was abused, right? Not cool.
We did know that, but thanks for reminding us, dick. Now I feel bad.
You should!
Nakaoka, I’m sorry. Do you want to be a team again?
Let’s do it!

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

Those guys are going to star in the worst sports manga I’ll ever read. Anyway, maybe don’t offer yourself up for walloping next time. Lesson learned.
Glad we fixed things, though.
I didn’t do anything, though.
drat straight, you just sat there and watched me get my rear end beat…
I told you! I bruise easily!
Even still… It was like I was doin’ a sprint… and you were runnin’ next to me, givin’ me the strength to keep going… You pushed me to be cool back there….
Cool? When was this?
That almost hurts more than my actual bruises!

*laughter*
I feel like my bond with Ryuji is growing deeper…

I think my mouth’s bleedin’, so we’ll have to eat some other time. Later!

Gah… Man, my jaw’s still kinda messed up.

They’re gonna have to handle the rest, but… I think they’ll make the right call. Seein’ them havin’ a real heart-to-heart talk… They got a good team.

Still a long way from how things used to be, but… I did all I could. Man. If those guys are really gonna go for this, I gotta step up my own game.

Daytime → Evening

Music: Beneath the Mask -Rain-

>We’ve got plenty of time, relax.
We’ve got less than three days!
>Oh. Well… Hm. Fine, I give you all permission to panic.
That’s really not helpful, man!

It sounds like everyone’s starting to get anxious…

Starting?

But considering how fast the days are closing in, the best thing we can do for now is stay calm.

Music: Everyday Days

Pretty easy one this time.

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

Music: Beneath the Mask -Rain-

Really surprised you’re still able to put on that act after last time.

Does your room need cleaning, or did you need me to cook for you? I provide all sorts of services!

Gah! Hearing that never fails to skeeve me out.

Temperance Rank 8: Part 97

…… But I have to say goodbye to it today.

Music: Alleycat

The thing is, I’ve decided to quit! …My boss found me a part-time job that pays better than this one.

Hey, hold on a minute…

Takase-kun’s guardians keep increasing their demands… …So this is just what I have to do.

That can’t be what you want.
It doesn’t really matter what I want. I just have to apologize to Takase-kun?
By giving more money to those parasites?
If that’s not the right thing to do, then what is?
I think all notion of “right” and “wrong” escaped the two of us a long time ago, considering all… you know, *this.* *gestures at Kawakami*

I wonder if I can escape all this if I quit being a teacher. People like me have no right being a teacher. If I quit on my own, I won’t have to pay them… That’s why I’m going to quit both my teaching job and my maid job… What do you think?

Why do you keep looking to me for approval? Decide for yourself.
I decided to quit… but was that really my decision…? Oh, who am I kidding? I can’t stop teaching. If that was an option, I would have resigned when Takase died. I still feel the need to keep teaching… I wonder why.
Keep searching, you can do it…
That’s right… I thought the way to apologize to him was to make sure there would never be another student like him. If I hadn’t been afraid of rumors, I could have saved him. I wanted to take care of my students. But now, I’m so preoccupied with part-time jobs just to continue teaching… I can’t make things right like this…
I’m sure you can still fix things. Probably.

I’ll be the teacher I aspire to be… That’s the right way for me to make amends to Takase-kun. From here on, I refuse to pay them any more money! And that is my answer! ...Well, what do you think?

Good answer! …But, uh, again, stop asking me to live your life for you.

You can’t get the right answer from someone else. It can only be found from within. …I learned that from you. In a way, you’re MY teacher. …Haha, just kidding.

You keep finding new and original ways to make this strange, don’t you?

I feel Kawakami’s trust in me strengthening…

Especially to you.

Please, for the love of god, don’t give me any more attention.

I averted my eyes from you because you were labeled, just like Takase-kun was… But from now on, I’m going to protect you too. As your teacher, I will never betray you.

Uh, I mean…
*nervous laugh* …What the gently caress?

…But, thanks. I’ll speak with the Takases. I’m not going to run anymore. Everything should be fine as long as I talk to them face to face. All right, it’s time for me to go. Thank you. See you later. Good night.

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

Oh, wait… I was supposed to stop working as Becky today.

But I felt so stuck facing it alone. It’s thanks to you that I actually figured out what I need to do.

I have three possible replies in my head. Hm… I’ll be fine as long as I don’t say that third thing…

AH poo poo

But I haven’t given you any proper appreciation yet, so… thank you, really. Get to bed early tonight. Lack of sleep is basically poison for your body and mind, okay? Good night.

Anon: I bet they’re crying LOL

Daytime

Music: Beneath the Mask -Rain (Instrumental Version)

With Medjed’s day of attack almost here, the anticipation over their showdown is at a fever pitch. People overseas are also showing great interest. Some are even betting on who will win. One bookie says that the odds are on Medjed’s side.

“This is based on absolutely nothing. He is a terrible bookie.”

People are really betting on this? And they think we’re gonna lose?

gently caress no.

We have no available Confidants today (besides Makoto, technically, but she’s actually stat-gated at the moment), so… we’re just gonna stay inside and craft some tools!

Music: Everyday Days

Oh, hey, the Perma-Pick is available. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough Liquid Mercury to craft it.

We’re going to make four Psycho Bombs for something coming up in a couple updates. Sorry, did I say a couple? I meant a couple dozen.

Sweet, we get a bonus for our trouble.

We’re then going to spend the remaining seven crafts making more Lockpicks. We only have… oh, ten. That’s probably enough, but we’ll still make more.

And we get two extra. Nice. That leaves us with 19.

Maaku gains Proficiency +2, plus an extra Proficiency +1 from the double craft proc.

Daytime → Evening

Music: Beneath the Mask

(Young Businessman) Oh… You’re talking bout… What were they called? Medjed.
You should be ready for any crisis. That’s why I installed all this new security software.
Well, I don’t have any info that’d be valuable to them. They’ll only go after the big companies.

We have a few options tonight, but for some reason I decide that I’ll spend the evening taking the twins on an outing.

Every day, lost sheep flock there to pray. There are even cases where individuals will confess to crimes.
Confessing one’s crimes due to a fear of divine punishment… This has a familiar ring to our own Inmate’s rehabilitation. Does such a location sound familiar to you?
Well? If you know where it is, then escort us there immediately!
……

So, what’ll it be?

Oh, so it’s called a church? Let’s witness this so-called faith that humans offer with our own two eyes.
Lead us there, Inmate. Now.

Music: Time to Repent

The peaceful atmosphere here is the antithesis of a prison cell…
Hmm? Is that man standing there one of the gods?

…No, that’s definitely a human. I don’t sense any exceptional abilities from him.

What is that over there… A smaller room?
I know! It’s an “iron maiden” for reforming criminals, right? Whoever goes inside and fails rehabilitation gets skewered!

I thought so. I felt a sense of foreboding from it.
No, Caroline. That’s the place where you speak with a human to divulge your past misdeeds. I believe it is called a “confession booth”…

Maaku’s feeling spicy tonight.

All right, which of you would like to go first?

Hmph, no such luck. We’re both going in.

You’re free to do so, but there really isn’t much room inside…

Not sure I’m supposed to be able to hear this…

…You what? Listen to people’s concerns? This isn’t a form of rehabilitation?

We shall undertake this confession and ascertain the truth for ourselves.
Then, ah, as for your confession…
Hmmmm, what to confess…

“Inmate”? “Warden”?
This is none of your business. We’re speaking to the gods right now.
Recently, I’ve been shifting my more mundane bookkeeping responsibilities onto Caroline…

But… she made so many mistakes in her work that I regret not doing it myself…

…How about yourself, Caroline? Don’t you have anything you’d like to confess while we’re here?
Uhhh, huh? Like… what?
I know you went out and ate menchi katsu all by yourself. Did you really think you could escape my notice?
Erk! I… was curious about the line! Like, what could humans want so badly that they would stand in place for so long—

Fine, fine, fine! I’m sorry! I won’t do it again! …Confession time is over! We’re done here!

Were it not for this opportunity, we would have likely kept these matters locked away deep in our hearts.

That’s YOUR job, Inmate!
Know your place.
By the way, why do humans pray to gods? Shouldn’t they be spending that time trying to solve their problems themselves?

Well, isn’t that all too convenient for the humans…
I’ll bet the gods don’t appreciate that answer any more than we do.

Here is your reward.

Samarecarm? A full-HP revive skill card? Eh… it’ll do, I suppose.

Put that out of mind, Caroline. Once we return, you’re going to tell me all about your experience eating you-know-what…

Not enough, you haven’t.

Chapter 109: 8/19-8/22: Hacking To The Late

This update covers content from Parts 89 and 90 of the original LP.

Anon: criminal catfight, eh

Daytime

Music: Tokyo Emergency

Here’s the pitch… Strike three! That’s his tenth strikeout today! It’s a heated pitcher’s battle with neither team scoring runs in the tournament’s final round…

(Elderly Female Customer) Ah, that date on that calling card? What kind of crazy thing do you think will happen?
Just… All I know is that it’ll be crazy! They’re up against a world-famous group, you know.

I accidentally examine the phone here. More importantly, though: it’s day, Morgana. What the gently caress are you talking about? She’s not gonna answer.

Oh, whatever. Let’s try it.

I hope you’ll call back again soon!
It looks like Kawakami’s not in today. Is she really planning on quitting? Well, she’ll probably still do your chores either way. She did make a deal with you.

Music: Tokyo Daylight

We’ll buy a Cleaning Spray from the secondhand clothes shop.

Visiting Chihaya for a Luck Reading.

It seems you will greatly benefit from taking actions that will increase your Kindness.

And now Yusuke for a skill card duplication.

We haven’t worked here in a while, and our Kindness is lagging a bit behind.

Music: Break it Down

Oh, by the way… did you know they caught the culprit behind those assaults?

Technically true.

Well, apparently it really was Naguri, just like I thought! He actually turned himself in. He was such a delinquent! What do you think made him surrender?

*wink*

Oh, that’s what I was thinking! A lot of these crimes have been ending similarly: The culprit has a change of heart and confesses. The Phantom Thieves have to be real… They just have to be… Oh, sorry! I got a little sidetracked for a second there! Here’s your pay for today.

Well, nice work. Be careful out—Oh. I guess there’s not actually a need to be vigilant anymore. Your way home should be a little safer now. See you next time!

Still, I bet this job making gifts has boosted your Kindness.

Maaku gains a boosted Kindness +2.

That’s us. Fixing the world, one step at a time.

Come on, we should head home.

Daytime → Evening

Music: Beneath the Mask -Rain-

(on TV) Medjed is extremely dangerous. Judging from their past actions, they’ll make good on their threat. Of course, Medjed has only resurfaced because the Phantom Thieves recklessly provoked them. If the Phantom Thieves have any shred of decency, they should step forward and take responsibility.
He says it’s our fault? Can you believe how we got dragged into this?

Listen closely: the place we wish to evaluate for your rehabilitation is… …somehow capable of simulating the ocean despite being indoors.
Rumor has it that sea creatures from all around the world have been gathered in this one place.

The All Blue… It does exist……

What an incredulous claim, recreating something as vast as the ocean within a building… Does such a location sound familiar to you?
Well? If you know where it is, then escort us there immediately!

They’re talking about the aquarium, which we have not been to… at least, not in the canon timeline. We went there once with Akechi, but we reloaded a save because that was sub-optimal.

It appears you’re unaware of such a location.
Are you REALLY working hard at your rehabilitation? If you don’t know the place, then you’d better find it quick!
If there is a limit to what you can discover on your own, you may want to turn to the knowledge of others. We’ve heard that you can acquire a book containing such knowledge in a place where young people gather… Perhaps you should begin your search there.
Report back to us the moment you find it! Got it!?

Or are you here to see me instead?

Yes, that’s right.

Helping the diverse customers here may improve your Kindness…!
What do you say? Did you want to do some work for me today?

We’re here because we still have that boost to Kindness gain from Chihaya… but mostly because, having seen that scene at Hanasaki, I got curious about if there are other follow-up scenes for the other jobs relating to the requests tied to them. Spoiler alert: there are not, and this is a waste of time.

All right, go on and change.

It’s almost time for the customers to arrive, so good luck.

drat, this job pays well!

All right, you should be going home. You’re still underage, and Shinjuku is dangerous at night.

Maaku gains a boosted Kindness +2.

We should go home. I’m getting sleepy…

Anon: Medjed must be bored

Daytime

Music: Tokyo Emergency

There is a sadness to it, like tears shed from dreary clouds in the European sky.

Haha, I suppose a child like yourself would fail to comprehend. One’s hidden hesitations and worries subtly, subconsciously, rise to the surface. The ability to perceive those sensations in art and life is very important. Do you understand?

August 21st—the day Medjed says it will attack—is hours away, and Medjed has been unnervingly quiet. If an attack does occur, we cannot rule out the possibility of it triggering a global recession.
The deadline’s tomorrow, huh? It’s no surprise that everyone’s panicking.

Music: Tokyo Daylight

Back to Chihaya for another Luck Reading.

Charm this time.

It seems you will greatly benefit from taking actions that will increase your Charm.

You know, I don’t know a ton about Japanese fortune-telling or whatever, but… it’s supposed to be possible to get negative fortunes, right? Like, there’s minor good fortune, good fortune, major good fortune, but also minor bad fortune, bad fortune, major bad fortune? Or something like that? My point is, I think Chihaya’s putting her thumb on the scale here to make sure we’re getting our money’s worth, and hell, I appreciate it.

We’re going to continue checking in on our old jobs for new dialogue by going to work at Triple Seven.

Music: TRIPLE SEVEN

Oh, hey. You said you were never coming back here, so I wasn’t expecting to see you again.
Yeah, well, this is almost certainly the last time for real.
Suuuure.
No, I mean it!

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

It’s admirable that you’re making your own money. I feel like I’m seeing you in a new light.

Trust me, Makoto, I am *not* doing this for the money.

Sorry, didn’t mean to bother you. I’ll see you once I’m ready to pay.

Maaku gains a boosted Charm +2, as well as 3,500 yen, but no extra dialogue, sadly.

Daytime → Evening

Music: Beneath the Mask

>I dunno, lemme check.
HEY SOJIRO, IS FUTABA AWAKE YET?
No! Why are you yelling!?
>She’s still asleep.

Dude, this ain’t just some normal oversleeping stuff! Our deadline’s tomorrow! If Futaba’s not up by then…
But can she really do anything even if she does wake up…?
Honestly, I’m not sure. Either way, our only option is to put our trust in her.

>We’re hosed, you’re saying.
Not in so many words… But I understand feeling powerless.

Yeah… If she’s been asleep all this time, do you think she’s having some kind of long dream?
Hm, dreams are said to be the sorting of memories, after all. She surely needs ample time to face her troubled past.
Her past? You think she’s really facing all that poo poo right now…?
If that is the case… she would probably need a great amount more time to do so. But considering how she had us wrapped around her finger… I feel as though she’ll be able to pull this off.

>It’ll be fiiiiiiiiine. Probably.

Yes.
Indeed.
Well, just give us a ring if anything changes!
We’re counting on you!
I have to agree with Makoto. Who knows how this might turn out…

Oh my god, Mishima, take a loving hint

Seems like we’re going to need a new strategy… I’d like to talk to you about it. Do you have time today?

(Adorable Woman) Geography doesn’t matter on the internet. Besides, the Phantom Thieves will take care of them.
The Phantom Thieves are just a myth! That’s why they haven’t responded! Wake up. This city is built on lies!

Maaan… Can’t #Millennials and Medjed just chill out and have some beers like they’re buuuds? Aight, aight, aight… Lemme drop some knowledge on you, buuuddy… We ownin’ this summer break, man. We doin’ it right, buuudd—*hurk*

We should talk when I’ve got more time. See you later.

Unfortunately, Akechi is plot-gated now. We won’t be able to hang out with him for a little while.

So many of them see these temptations of summer and just… lose control, you know what I mean? That’s why I have to be a rock for my students! A pillar of stability!

Chouno, you’re at a bar right now.

Music: Layer Cake

If it’s too cold for you, put on a jacket, kid.

All right, I’ll tell you about the shop. It’s a piece of cake for a gun enthusiast like you, right?

If you’re considered an employee, you won’t seem suspicious coming in and out of the shop, right? If you get what I’m sayin’, bring the goods to the back.

Hanged Man Rank 3: Part 91

I’m s’posed to be runnin’ an honorable business here, y’know.

You? Nuh-uh, no way.
Is it really that unbelievable?
Let me put it this way: you radiate a dense aura of malfeasance. You could walk into a coma patient’s room and their heartbeat would quicken; your vibes are that bad. You are intensely suspicious.
You’re one to talk, kid. Dunno why I hired someone as shifty as you. Even *my* client base’ll be scared off with you around.

Some guy on the internet’s been claimin’ all my goods’re knock-offs. And once you’ve got a bad rap like that, it’s real tough to shake it.

Sounds familiar.
Hm? You goin’ through somethin’ similar?
Well, you see…
I don’t care. Anyways, lemme fill you in on what’s goin’ on here. I bet the guy who spread that rumor is Tsuda, the one I had you eavesdrop on back at the diner. He’s a lieutenant in the Hashiba Clan of the yakuza… the same clan I used to be in.
This information is in no way surprising to me.
Tsuda used to be my sworn brother, but I got some… unsavory business with him now. But I’m a known quantity ‘round these parts. One wrong step and the entire Tokyo underworld will be up my rear end. That’s where you come in, ‘cause you’re gonna snoop on Tsuda for me.
Cool, let’s do this.
You seem unfazed by the danger I’m potentially puttin’ you in.
I’m a teenager, I’m basically immortal.

Heh, idiot. But y’know, I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for idiots like you. Anyways, you get the gist of what’s goin’ on now, yeah? You’ll be workin’ with that in mind. I expect a lot from you, kid. ...Oh, and I’ll add to the special menu, to thank you for gettin’ that info for me the other day.
It feels like my bond with Iwai is growing even deeper…

In the original game, this skill was Medium Customization, which let us customize mid-grade guns, whatever qualifies as “mid-grade.” In Royal, this has been changed to an unlock of special camouflage that inflicts ailments on targets. We’ll go into that when we next customize our firearms.

Music: Suspicion

Huh? I thought I told you to stop comin’ around here.
But…

Uh, why’re you being such a dick all of a sudden?
Shut up. This is none of your business.

…Just go home n’ study, Kaoru. You’ve got entrance exams comin’ up, remember?
Okay… I guess I’ll be going then… *leaves*

Well, he folded immediately.

What’s the matter, didn’t expect some hardened yakuza thug like me to have a kid?
No, I’ve played several educational video games that taught me otherwise.

He’s always askin’ me if he can help out here, always worryin’ about what I’m gettin’ up to. *sigh* But I prolly shouldn’t be tellin’ a kid like you about this… Well, you can head home for today. Nice work, kid.

But I didn’t do anything…
Nice. Work. Kid.

I feel like helping Iwai with his work has honed my Proficiency…

Maaku gains Proficiency +2.

See ya next time.

Are the Phantom Thieves even doing anything?
Hey! What are we gonna do!?
I should never have trusted the Phantom Thieves…
What’s going to happen tomorrow…?

Anon: medjed is dangerous……

Early Morning

Anon: They’re gonna do it, right?
Anon: ugh. again?
Anon: I bet they’re crying LOL
Anon: What side is Akechi-kun on?
Anon: yo, where the police?

I guess there’s nothing the Phantom Thieves could do…
Medjed must have been too much for them.
Stock prices are plummeting again…
Maybe Medjed’s true goal was…

Futaba’s still asleep too… This won’t be good…

Hey yourself.

There’s something I came to do…

Music: Alleycat

Today’s the day Wakaba passed. I do this every year… Here, I’ve got a cup for you too.

Wakaba… Your work and your kid were so fulfilling for you… Why’d you have to die so suddenly…?

It’s always a shame when someone so close to you dies extremely suspiciously…

…That reminds me, you saw me talking to that prosecutor— I mean, that woman in a suit, right? I remember you were real bothered by it. She might come back, so I guess I should tell you about it. That woman was trying to get information on Wakaba’s research out of me.
That’s what we heard in the Palace.
You don’t need to know what the research was about. Just know there was some trouble around it. Obviously, Wakaba got dragged into that as well.

So, that lady’s evil. Got it. Figured as much when she came here threatening you with revoking your custody.

Now, they ruled her death a suicide… but I’ve got my doubts.
Doubts? Could she have been killed?
Supposedly, there were people who wanted to take her research and use it for their own benefit…

Eh, that’s probably got nothing to do with me.

Don’t get me wrong though. I don’t have a lick of evidence. That’s why I haven’t told Futaba any of this. I don’t want to cause her any more trouble.
It sounded like she had suspicions of her own based on what she said in the Palace.
Still, there’s one thing I regret. It was right before Wakaba died… She told me, “I think I might die.”

I don’t see the problem. She was right, wasn’t she?

I brushed it off thinking it was just a joke, but if I had just taken her seriously… *sigh*

Sounds like a weird joke to me, man.

It’s very easy to rag on Sojiro for this, but he’s also wrong; there’s absolutely nothing he could have done to prevent Akechi from working his voodoo here.

That’s another reason I took Futaba in… Redemption. She went through such horrible things. Those heartless adults just yelled at the poor girl… Hey… how do you heal emotional scars?

Uh, I’m sixteen or seventeen years old. Why are you asking me?

Of course… Sorry.

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

…It’s cold.
Huh?
You can’t sell this!

He said it’s a tradition or something.
A tradition to give the customers lovely, stale coffee? What’s become of this café!?

N-Never mind that… How did you get here…?
Uh… I walked.
…You’re okay!?
Was that bad?
Th-That’s not it! I’m just shocked to see you out of the house…
Uh… I’m sorry I worried you.
(about to cry) …Ha… …It’s all right.
By the way, what’s the date today?

It’s, uh…
(annoyed) August 21st.
Yeah, that. Now if you’ll excuse me, I am no longer interested in Futaba’s miraculous recovery, and I have something very interesting to attend to just over here where you can’t see me.

*ahem*

Oh, I remember now. Medjed.

Early Morning → Daytime

Anon: yo, where the police?
Anon: The thieves got famous!
Anon: hey thieves, can u see this?
Anon: What cheapass justice, lol
Anon: this’ll blow up
Anon: poo poo + poo poo = poo poo sandwich

I heard someone’s tampering with the system.
Is it Medjed? No, it couldn’t be…
What are the police doing? They’re so incompetent…
Even the Phantom Thieves couldn’t stop them…

Music: Disquiet

Leave this to me. I’ll have them cooked in a day.
We don’t have a day.
Then half a day, whatever. I can cut some corners.
Don’t cut too many, we need this to be decisive!
Talking cat!
Yeah, you get used to it.
…Okay then. Back to work!

…….
Hey, Futaba!
*gamer noises*
I don’t think she can hear me… Talk about intense concentration. This place is so messy… I’ m surprised she can focus at all. Futaba? You shouldr really clean your room a bit.

All right, Jordan Peterson.

*more gamer noises*
She’s not listening… Oh well. Just waiting around is boring. Let’s clean the place up.

What!? I have to do *chores* now?
Quit bellyaching or I’ll scratch you.

Well, Futaba? We’re done on our end. Are you finished yet?
*Further gamer noises*
She can’t hear a word I’m saying. *sigh* Guess we’ll just have to keep waiting…

Daytime → Evening

Wh-What’s up? Something happened?
It’s finished.
Finished? What is?

Oh, it’s clean in here now! I don’t really understand how, but whatever! Time to sleep!
Wait a min—

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

Let’s just go home.

Anon: history’s written by the victor

Anon: is medjed worse than mafia?

That has to be fake, right? There’s no way!
I’m scared… What’s going to happen?
Are the police taking action…? They’re ignoring it? Seriously!?
Still, I’m sure the Phantom Thieves will do… something…

Music: Beneath the Mask

Awesome. And has Medjed been taken care of? Er, more importantly, how’s Futaba doing?

>She’s asleep again.

Seriously?
She must have been quite exhausted. I can’t say I blame her at all.

>Yusuke, she was just in a three-week coma.

If Medjed’s been affected, it will surely make the news. That should be enough to confirm whether or not the deed’s been done.
Then why don’t we all watch the news together?
Yes. We should meet up at Leblanc as usual.
See you tomorrow, guys!
We should be in the clear now, right…?

But I need my aojiru!

No, it can’t be… It’s nothing.

Hm?

…No, that’s not it. Be normal to her.

Some citizens are trying to avoid going outdoors, and people have been in a constant state of worry.

Y2K! Y2K! Y2K!

Many corporations have been working around the clock without sleerp to prepare for the attack.
Nothing’s changed yet. All we can do now is pray…

Let’s have Kawakami make some curry for us. We’ll only get one, but it’ll be nice to have. I’m less jazzed about calling her to do poo poo for us during this messy period in her life while she’s trying to quit this job, but… eh, whatever.

I see. If you ask her to do that for you, then you’ll have time to do something else.
You’re cookin’ dinner, huh? I’m about to head home, but… Careful with the stove, all right?

Oh, wait, it’s you… I’m off today, but if you just want housekeeping, I don’t mind. It’s still work, so I’ll head over after I change. Hang on just a bit.

We’re going to read this aquarium guide to unlock the twins’ next hangout.

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

If Kevin Costner isn’t there, I don’t want it.

The Shinagawa Aquarium, huh… It looks like a whole other world in there. Pretty exciting stuff. Looks pretty fun for adults too. There’s even a section where you can touch the fishes… It’s a sort of place that anyone would enjoy. You should go check it out with someone once in a while.

I’m feeling kinda woozy… Probably because we saw a whole bunch of pictures of the aquarium…

Ha, “Sleep with the Fishes.”

Music: Beneath the Mask

All right. I’ll see you later.

There’s absolutely no suspense here whatsoever, game. Stop trying so hard to trick me.

Music: Beneath the Mask (Instrumental Version)

We say “thought to be” because the mark is in ASCII like in old GameFAQs walkthroughs. Also, a Medjed guy got doxxed into oblivion. Sorry, not the Elder Scrolls game, I mean he’s in jail. Thank you.

Aren’t these the guys people have been up in arms about?
Medjed has yet to issue an official reply.

I don’t think this newscaster understands what a decentralized anonymous hacker collective is if it thinks it can issue “official” replies.

Furthermore, their previously announced cleanse of Japan has remained unimplemented for now. Some speculate that they have taken this series of events seriously and ultimately canceled their plan.
*satisfied laughter*
What are you all smirking about?

You’re going senile, old man. We’re stone-faced.
No I’m not, you little brat. Just cut it out, you’re gonna scare off all my customers.
Wha—
If you say “what customers,” I swear to god, I don’t know what I’ll do.
Err… Well, anyway, I just realized our break’s almost over!

There are still ten days left.
I wanna go somewhere, but we can’t just leave Futaba-chan alone.
Some things still concern me too, like that “research”…

Sojiro’s still in the room, idiot.
Oh, sorry…
Eh? You say something?

Good morning.

It seems she’s cautious of us…
Hey, why don’t we go upstairs? If any customers come, she’ll be even more afraid.
Why don’t you go with them, Futaba? Have fun. It’s about time my regulars show up anyway, so I don’t want you guys loitering around my store.

(Distinguished Man) (on TV) The issue I want to make clear is the attitude of the police, and more importantly, the government.
……
(TV Reporter) What do you mean?
Are they doing their best to find an effective countermeasure against these Phantom Thieves? Is it not the government’s duty to create a society where its citizens can live without worry?

…I’m sorry, I don’t think I understand. The Phantom Thieves only target criminals, correct? Why would most citizens have to worry about them?
I believe all our country’s citizens should have to live without fear of being brainwashed by vigilantes, personally, but I respect the difference of opinion. And besides, what if this is only a stepping stone to further bloodshed? What if they’re, say, strategically choosing targets behind the scenes to cause maximum damage to the country so they can swoop in and take political power? That would be just aaaaaaawful.

Unfortunately, the current cabinet is powerless. As such, they should be disbanded. I believe now is the time for me to risk my political career in hope of making a new reality. A new political system that goes beyond parties or factions… An ideal country of peace and order…

Oh god, it’s just some stupid Third Way horseshit! gently caress!!!

I have to agree. I hope he can work to ease the anxieties of the elderly.

Yeah, you would say that, you goddamn geezers. He didn’t even state any policies! This is just bullshit culture war pablum!

What do you think, Boss?
Hm? Oh sorry, I wasn’t listening.

Music: Interrogation Room

So the Phantom Thieves only stole the heart of Futaba Sakura? And Medjed was in turn defeated by her real-world hacking abilities? This does correlate to the facts as we know them…

If that’s true, then… Wakaba Isshiki’s suicide was fabricated… Someone might have targeted her with the aim of destroying her research…
Speaking of her, one thing I haven’t forgotten was that you were trying to revoke Sojiro’s custody over her daughter as leverage against him. Christ, lady.
Do you mind? I’m busy thinking over here.

Wakaba’s death was two years ago… That also coincides with when the incidents started occurring… Does this other Metaverse user that Madarame and Kaneshiro mentioned… really exist?

I mean, it wasn’t us, so… yes.
I mentioned earlier those psychotic breakdowns that have been alarming the public. People losing consciousness or becoming violent with no motive, with no apparent social or societal impetus… I believe that these cases are all connected to some manner of conspiracy. The method made it trickier to verify any of this, but your story lines up perfectly with that reasoning. No… it’s basically confirmed that it’s real. Though a new criminal is a bit surprising… and convenient for you. What did your group think about this other Metaverse user?
Uh, to tell you the truth… We were basically ignoring them.
Huh!?
Yep. No plan to deal with them, no idea how we’d ever even begin to track them down, and not even a massive amount of concern about their activities. Kinda strange, now that I say it out loud. We were pretty bad at this, not gonna lie. Guess we were just too preoccupied with our own bullshit!
That’s so dumb and makes you look so bad that I have no choice but to believe it… But nevertheless, let’s keep going. I need to get to the bottom of this.

I feel like my bond with Sae is growing deeper…

You should know who he is. …Considering what happened.

You guys really botched this one, huh?
*nervously dodging eye contact*

Your testimony regarding this incident will be serious. I’m sure you understand why. Answer my next question carefully. What did you do to this Okumura?

And that’s the end of this act. When we return… oh poo poo, I have more loving P5A to watch, don’t I?

Line changes!!!!!

Unvoiced this time, Ryuji’s offscreen “Boss! Hello!” when Sojiro calls us down on 8/22 has been changed to “Whaddup!” Incredibly pointless change.

I always appreciate that Sojiro does a complete 180, immediately after catching you breaking into his home, and drops the "tough love" act, stops threatening to kick you out and doesn't even bother pointing out that you were in his daughter's bedroom when she went into her coma nap.

It's not like his deal is particularly subtle, but I appreciate that they put his pivot on that specific scene and didn't even have any characters spell it out in the next one.

Chapter 110: Side Story 5: Now With Recaps! (sorry)

We’re not going to have much Thieves’ Den to cover this update, because Futaba hasn’t technically joined the Thieves, so there’s not much we can do with our new props without her available to comment on them. We’ll probably do more here once Haru is with us.

Music: No More What Ifs (Instrumental Version)

We earned a couple rewards. That’s nice.

He should fight his own goddamn battles.
Even his allies were bribed with money. It’s pitiful, honestly.
It’s not like anyone would side with him on their own.
Friendship’s gotta come from the heart, y’know? Take a lesson from the Phantom Thieves!
Hehe… I agree.

I don’t get why people bother to make public announcements for every little thing that happens.
Sure, big PR disasters are no fun, but isn’t it exciting to see famous people get married?
M-Married…?
I agree wholeheartedly! Marriage conferences are the best! Great minds think alike, huh, Lady Ann?

Don’t get any ideas, cat.

That was a rather sudden change in attitude… Or should I say, cattitude?

…Shut up, Yusuke.

All right, let’s gently caress with the décor.

Hmm, yes, I like Futaba’s theming.

Let’s get Necronomicon and Shadow Futaba in here, too.

Oh, and we can even add Cognitive Wakaba emerging from the ceiling! She’s too big to go anywhere else.

And the beef bowl shop. Seems good.

He even treated Mishima-kun and Shiho like slaves in his Palace… What an absolute scumbag.
You’re drat right. I still get chills if I think about what woulda happened if we lost to him.

But that is absolutely no reason to exploit them.
Yeah.
I hope that by taking down Kaneshiro, there will be at least a few less victims.

How much ginger can one man eat!? The extra-large bowl comes with a whole mountain of the stuff…
That’s the best part! Try it, man. It’s freakin’ good.

Uh… Dude? It already did. You could hear that poo poo a mile away.
In a perfect world, I would order the extra-large, but all I can afford right now is a side of pickled ginger.
So in other words… you don’t have any money at all. Fine, I’ll spot ya. It’s beef bowl time!

It’s true that she felt rather distinct from the other Palace rulers we encountered.
She wasn’t a savage being, wallowing in her own desires. In fact, I sensed the reverse: an empty, lonely feeling.
Well, y’know… Futaba was kinda different from those lovely adults.

Now, on to the goddamn anime!

I’ve decided to overhaul how I actually cover these episodes because the bullet point list didn’t seem terribly engaging, especially if you’re reading it without having watched the episode. I’ll do a brief recap and thoughts instead, even though it means I basically have to watch each episode twice, ugh. Also, as I mentioned last time, there’s five of these motherfuckers to watch. Uuuuuuggggggghhhhhh.

Episode 13

This is a rather interesting episode, honestly. Zero main plot progression, for one. It’s all covering Ren’s relationship with Akechi, as well as Yusuke’s Confidant storyline, and uses the latter as a framework to develop the former. They move up Akechi finding Leblanc to facilitate this, which is a decent change, though for some reason Sojiro seems confused by the concept of pre-recorded television, because he gets very visibly confused when Akechi walks in despite him currently being on the teevee. Also, there’s a bit where Akechi asks Ren a question and Ren’s just chewing food idly, it’s pretty good. Akechi challenges Ren to a chess game, which Ren doesn’t even know the rules of, and god am I sick of chess metaphors in stories, they’re never actually that smart. This one isn’t too cloying, though, it’s mostly just Akechi winning in the first game at the start and then Ren surprising him by doing well in a second game in the post-credits scene.

There’s a brief scene after the OP of Mishima getting excited about the Phan-Site and somewhat callously blowing off Ren telling him that Kaneshiro, you know, victimized people. I’m assuming a later episode will cover Mishima’s big head. Anyway, the only scene from this episode that has any counterpart in the main story of P5 is the gang meeting up to discuss what to do now that Kaneshiro has been taken down, and that’s a loose connection because nothing actually happened in that scene in the first place. The gang splits up, Ren deciding not to go to Mementos because he says he has plans, but I guess that’s a lie because Yusuke takes him aside to do his Confidant storyline, which begins with them… going to Mementos!

Actually, reviewing the episode, I lied, there’s one more scene from the main story, but I can’t be blamed for forgetting it because it’s a loving Sae and SIU Director scene! This covers, I believe, a combination of the scenes from 7/10 (where the SIU Director sees Shido on TV and has the phone call about THE CONSPIRACY) and another one from way back on 6/5, where Sae gets put on the Phantom Thieves case. The SIU Director does not have the phone call in this scene, but we do see Shido, and Sae does get put on the case.

Back to Yusuke, these first few scenes from his Confidant contain the line “I feel like I’m painting for money… It makes me no different than Madarame!” which is very dumb, but it’s true to the game so there’s not much room to complain there. We also see Akechi spying on Kawanabe, who we won’t meet until later. Anyway, Joker and Fox head into Mementos and Fox just goes loving nuts sketching it. Later at the gallery, Kawanabe rips into the finished painting, but he’s accompanied by another man who says nothing and will never be named. Yusuke despairs about his work, but outside, Kawanabe offers Yusuke the opportunity and they go to discuss it over sushi. The other man comes too. He still does not talk. Yusuke gets angry at the prospect of being “sold” like in the game and it ends the same way.

On his way home, Ren runs into Akechi and the two talk while batting at the batting cages. Akechi mentions to Ren that he’s investigating some dark rumors about Kawanabe offering sponsorships but saddling hopefuls with debt instead. Now, you probably noticed that this has absolutely nothing to do with the game story here. I wonder if it has anything to do with that strange man conspicuously hanging out next to Kawanabe in every scene with no other purpose? Nah, they probably just made Kawanabe evil for no reason, let’s ignore it. Anyway, this is where Ren finds out that Kawanabe knew Madarame. Ren and Akechi conspire to set up a meeting with Kawanabe to uncover evidence of the plot.

We then see some of the other, lighter scenes from the first half of Yusuke’s Confidant like the church scene (complete with a cameo by Hifumi and Ren doing the pose, though Yusuke says it’s the anguish of “original sin” and not the crucifixion for some reason) and a montage including, of course, the boat. They don’t actually show any of that scene besides Ren and Yusuke in the boat next to the siblings, for good reason.

Akechi and Ren meet up at Leblanc to discuss Kawanabe and Akechi can’t figure out the direct money flow, and then the camera lingers on a picture of the guy who keeps standing next to Kawanabe, hmmmmmmmmmm… Later, the Phantom Thieves gather at Leblanc for the scene where they help Yusuke out. It’s pretty much just the game scene, except Makoto is there this time (and Sojiro finds out she’s the student council president). Then Joker and Fox return to Mementos for the purpose of Fox’s second painting, and on their way home they run into Kawanabe and Other Guy. Ren mentions a bunch of businesses Akechi brought up earlier connected to the illicit money, which Kawanabe has never heard of. Later that night, Other Guy is panicking and moving money around because Kawanabe will be suspicious hearing about the businesses, but Akechi moves in with the cops and busts him!

All that’s left is the Yusuke max rank scene where he wins the competition and Kawanabe tells him that Madarame did secretly care about Yusuke, though his explanation of his history with Madarame is slightly more developed than in the game. Yusuke rejects Kawanabe’s help because, uh… something about his friends helping him through his desires, which feels like the opposite of the lesson he was learning?

There’s a postcredits scene but it’s mostly just Ren beating Akechi at chess while they disagree about justice. Though Ren does refer to Other Guy as “[Kawanabe’s] silent subordinate”, which, lol. I think the Makoto episode is up next from the preview. Not terribly looking forward to that one.

Miscellaneous notes:

After Yusuke gets angry in the meeting with Kawanabe, Ren says “Yusuke…” in the Japanese version, but “He’s gone now…” in English. I only noticed this because I had to switch the language on the Crunchyroll video because there was an unsubtitled text message right after that line in the English version, but that’s a really weird, dumb line in the dub. Also, I feel like the English dub was slightly… off for this episode. Like, badly synced. Other than that, there’s a weird moment where Morgana goes with Ann and Makoto to a cat café, which seems backwards, personally. My final thought is that holy poo poo, Akechi is so much gayer in the anime, jesus christ

Episode 14

Hoooooooo boy. This one was rough. Animation was largely fine, but this is the episode that covers Makoto’s Confidant, one of my personal least favorites, and to boot there was virtually no main plot progression for the second episode in a row. The only scenes that advanced the story were in the Sae flashforwards, aside from Sojiro getting the call about the “not cute” printer that’s all but stated to be from Futaba. Also, this is the start of the second half of the season, so like a quarter of the episode is dedicated to characters explaining the story we’ve already seen. It sucks. The recaps honestly bog this whole thing down so hard. It’s actively a chore to get through this one sometimes.

We start with a scene of Akechi being harangued by the press about the Phantom Thieves as his driver takes him… somewhere. This is his only scene in this episode, it’s entirely pointless. The one thing I noticed about it is that Robbie Daymond is probably the best person in the case at selling Japanese pronunciation, particularly of place names. Then we transition to Sae in the interrogation room, who briefly explains who the Phantom Thieves are and the events that have transpired related to them thus far. I guess Ren forgot his name again, because he’s the only person she could possibly be talking to. The main new bit here is that Sae, despite herself, is starting to be convinced. Then we get the new OP, “Dark Sun,” which I like less than “Break In To Break Out,” but it’s OK enough I suppose. Main thing I noticed about it is that Futaba and Haru are not in it (yet), which is weird because they were in the original OP. During some of the shots where they’re obviously going to be slotted in, Akechi and Sae take their place, hilariously.

After the opening, the Phantom Thieves assemble to take down the Shujin stalker in Mementos like in the game, where we get reintroduced to Skull, Panther, and Mona as Phantom Thieves, and I’m going to count that as recap #2. After that’s resolved, there’s a scene of Ren not able to buy bread, which seems to exist purely as a way to fill a little time while referencing the game. It also serves as a reintroduction to people mistrusting Ren, which is going to be recap #3. He talks with Makoto at lunch where she recaps the mistrust again, plus Ryuji and Ann’s status as outcasts and Kamoshida’s misdeeds (recap #4) and then they go to Shinjuku like in the game (filled with extremely conspicuous CGI people), while referencing an offscreen arcade visit like in Rank 1 of her Confidant. An aggressive recruiter makes his move on Makoto, Ren flees with her, and they see Eiko head to her job.

They confront Eiko about it later and that scene is almost completely lifted so I’ll skip most of it. The main thing is that Makoto mentions her dad, which is going to run through this episode a bit. Ren heads home and finds Yusuke at Leblanc, looking at the Sayuri. Sojiro gets a call from Futaba and heads out, then Yusuke recaps his backstory with Madarame (#5), and it kind of contradicts what we were supposed to take out of the previous episode because Yusuke says that Madarame only took him in for selfish reasons. Then we get a flashforward to the interrogation room with no relation to the previous scene besides Sae appearing on TV. In that flashforward, Sae realizes Makoto was a Phantom Thief.

Back in the present, Ren and Makoto are at an arcade and Makoto is questioning the point of all she’s worked for, but more importantly, she’s befriended Eiko! They even keep in the hand cream conversation, which is bizarre. Makoto tells Ren her dad was a cop. Later, we see the offscreen incident of Mishima being sent to placate a drunken Ohya’s need for intel on the Phantom Thieves, and then we cut to Chihaya trying to hock a Holy Stone onto Eiko and her host boyfriend Tsukasa, both scenes I kind of love. They don’t bite, not believing her prognostications about misfortune in love. In that scene, Eiko shows Tsukasa Makoto’s picture, and Tsukasa makes a real gross face when he sees it.

Ren, at home, gets Mishima’s angry texts and ignores them, then Morgana recounts the Kaneshiro arc (recap #6). Makoto takes Ren with her to meet Tsukasa and Eiko, which is bullshit because no way is Ren max Charm here. Tsukasa gets Makoto’s phone number against her will. Later, Makoto recounts the rumors about Tsukasa and tells Ren how her father died. The two meet with Eiko to tell her about Tsukasa, but she doesn’t believe it, and Makoto tricks Tsukasa into calling her by the wrong name since he doesn’t remember the names of any of his “girlfriends’”, a gambit that makes less sense to me every time I see it. Makoto slaps an angry Eiko, who cries because she has nothing. We don’t do the romantic “I need someone to teach me about love” thing though, which, good.

The group then changes Tsukasa’s heart, which ends up feeling redundant because the emotional climax of the episode has already occurred, and we’re introduced to Fox and Queen’s Phantom Thief identities this time (recap #7, ding ding ding). Also, Joker, whose Persona is listed as “???”, heh. Queen tells Joker that Eiko has forgiven her and they’re still friends, and also that Queen wants to be a loving cop, jesus christ. The only things left are the ED, which is fine if less good than the first, and the post-credits scene, which is Ren telling Sae in the interrogation room that Makoto isn’t an ignorant child anymore, and Sae getting flustered and moving onto Medjed.

It took me like, 18 hours to get through watching that episode front-to-back. And I only spent half that time asleep!

Episode 15

Not a terribly notable episode, but also not a terrible one. Sticks to the game in some respects and deviates slightly in others. Perfectly acceptable. One thing I will note is that the episode is even more desynced than 13 was, which is just incredible. I might have to find “another source” for these in the future if that trend is gonna keep up, because I’m seriously just watching these on Crunchyroll and it’s that distracting.

We start with the SIU Director having the call with Shido where he discusses the plan for taking out the Phantom Thieves. Then it’s time for the fireworks show that gets interrupted by rain. Well, before that, Ryuji does a weird little dance upon seeing the girls in their yukata. Anyway, they left in the group seeing Haru, which I get, but I was kind of hoping they’d do something about that. One thing I will mention is that Ren does bring his glasses to the fireworks this time.

After that, he heads home and finds Sojiro conversing with Sae, by which I mean she threatens him. Then the newscast about Medjed targeting the Phantom Thieves. The group discusses that at school with Yusuke joining over the phone, and resolve to ignore it. Mishima comes up to Ren afterwards about someone hacking the Phan-Site (it’s Alibaba). Later in class, everyone except Ren’s phones go off simultaneously and display the same logo. This is immediately followed by, of all things, a scene of Ren shirtless at Takemi’s, apparently having just drunk the knockout potion, and also Takemi obliquely praises Ren’s muscles. I have no idea why they included this. It’s especially difficult to unravel because I watched the previous episodes so long ago that I no longer remember what happened in most of them! Like, for posterity, I last watched this show in May 2022. It is currently February 2023. That’s a whole-rear end pregnancy! Was this Takemi subplot in any of those episodes?

In Takemi’s waiting room, Alibaba contacts Ren for the first time and tells him the basics: Alibaba will take down Medjed if the Phantom Thieves steal a heart for him. Ren shows the group these texts (Ryuji has a ha-ha funny comedy moment of realizing his phone has probably been hacked and rushing to delete his browser history) and then heads home, where Sojiro delivers him an envelope that has Futaba’s misunderstanding of what the calling card is on it. We then see a weird insert of a hacker who is very clearly not Futaba getting an email. This hacker exists purely to trick the audience, but no one watching this at this point hasn’t played the game so it’s pretty pointless.

The group meets up and discusses this when Alibaba contacts them again, and this scene makes the wise decision to combine the “Alibaba gives the group Futaba’s name” and “Alibaba calls off the deal upon learning they need to know about Futaba” scenes. There’s multiple long, static shots of the group reading the text messages and replying while the texts are overlaid on the screen, and it’s a little weird and not that interesting, but the scene does its job. While we’re here though, this was in the game, but: why do they assume Alibaba knows what a Palace is? That always bugged me.

Yusuke is the one who remembers Sojiro’s last name is “Sakura” this time, and Morgana chews the group out despite not remembering himself, heh. They immediately figure out he’s connected to Futaba, but can’t do anything. When Ren heads home, Sae is threatening Sojiro with loss of custody, and Sojiro gets real mad when Ren asks what that was about. Now knowing Futaba must be his daughter, the group wonders if Sojiro is abusive… and thankfully, they immediately shoot down the possibility, good, I hated that poo poo in the game. Ren even appreciates that they all agree it’s unlikely.

We see the unnamed hacker again, and they take out the power at Shibuya Station at night as part of the announcement of THE CLEANSE. The group decides to take down Medjed and resolve to find Alibaba, figuring out that Alibaba is Futaba. They head to Sojiro’s house, the lights go out due to the thunderstorm, and Futaba jumpscares Makoto. End of episode.

Three down, two to go.

Episode 16

Hopefully this recap will be the shortest yet just because it makes very few changes. When we left off, Futaba and Makoto scared each other. Futaba absconds upstairs and Sojiro barges in. Sojiro explains the tragic backstory and the gang finds out Futaba has a Palace. Then we see Caroline, Justine, and Igor for the first time in this batch of episodes. They have nothing interesting to say, but that’s par for the course.

At school, everyone is hoping the Phantom Thieves will do something. The gang heads to Futaba’s room and asks her about her keywords, and receives the “tomb” keyword despite it only being written and not spoken aloud. I should mention that in this version, they don’t need to pretend school is already finished but they had an assembly for no reason. I should also mention that the way the show displays the full text conversations overlaid on the shot is kind of wearing thin. The group enters the Palace and because they’re not wearing shoes, they burn themselves on the hot sand in a bad animation loop of them hopping from foot to foot. Ryuji also makes this horrific face:

The group heads to the pyramid and we get the unnecessary shots of the girls’ shirts wet from sweat inside the Palace instead of the bus. Futaba’s Shadow turns hostile and they run from the boulder, but we immediately cut to the group at the batting cages discussing what to do about that, which is a little jarring. They resolve to keep going, and also Ren hits a dinger seemingly out of the cages, which is bizarre because I’m pretty sure there’s supposed to be netting there to prevent that. Afterwards, Sae confronts Sojiro again outside of Leblanc, and it’s at this point that I realize that he never turned over Wakaba’s research notes to her in this version. Wonder why they’re saving that. In Futaba’s room, she is tormented by an apparition of her mother in shots that seem to be legitimately trying to evoke a horror sensibility.

Back in the Palace, the group navigates Futaba’s fickle heart and the various traps she lays. They combine the three murals into one connected sequence separated by static images of the group navigating the rooms in-between, which is a fine change. I wish they changed the translation of “maternity neurosis,” but whatever. Given how ridiculous and melodramatic this arc is, cutting it down severely helps make it seem less hokey, even if adding voice acting to Wakaba’s lines in these segments just further plays up how over-the-top Cognitive Wakaba is.

Shadow Futaba tells the Phantom Thieves that they need to get the real Futaba’s permission to enter to finish the theft. In Futaba’s room, an apparition of her Shadow warns her that she needs to accept the truth. At Leblanc, Ren wolfs down some curry and heads out, making Sojiro suspicious. When Sojiro asks if he’s up to anything, Ren responds with “Dunno,” which is funny, but also, dude, you need to hide this better. The gang heads to Futaba’s room once more to get her to open the door, which she eventually does, but she hides in the closet. They’re able to coax her out, and the episode ends.

As I said before, very few notable changes in that one, though I do like one small detail they added, where Futaba listens to Sojiro saying he’s a bad father from her wiretap. They have the restraint to not show her visibly reacting to that, and I like it better than showing her just listening to the following conversation from the gang like in the game.

Episode 17

Unsurprisingly, this one also doesn’t take a lot of liberties. We get the sphinx fight and nearly all of the rest of the Futaba business, so it’s pretty deliriously paced again as well. We start with Akechi investigating Iwai, of all people, but I don’t understand the point of that scene at all, because it immediately transitions to “THE CLEANSE IS TOMORROW, HIDE YOUR FAMILIES!” Then we return to Futaba’s room after the OP, with the group giving her the calling card. Unfortunately, the scriptwriters were clearly consulting the game’s English script, because she erroneously refers to her sin as “sloth” again, despite the fact that it’s supposed to be wrath, and isn’t even named at all in either Japanese version.

The group heads into the Palace and finds the Treasure, and I have to say, one of my most annoying pet peeves with this show is the way it’ll play like a fifteen second riff of a game song like Life Will Change, then cut it off before it gets good, but after it’s already played long enough that cutting it off early is extremely distracting. Whatever, they’re attacked by the sphinx and Futaba enters her own Palace in a sequence that I seriously almost blinked and missed. Her Shadow shows her the mural on the roof this time instead of inside the Palace, which is fine because having two separate scenes for that is pretty redundant and they cut down the original, extremely-belabored roof scene heavily anyway.

Futaba gets Necronomicon, summons a ballista which Panther operates, the group attacks (though you should really be using primarily physical attacks, guys, magic does nothing to her), and Joker basically blows Wakaba’s brains out, it’s way gnarlier in the show. Futaba talks with her real image of her mom then peaces out, the Thieves flee the collapsing Palace, and Futaba enters her stupor. They do show Takemi here, which is nice, but given that she is asleep for like, less than one day in this version I question why they bothered including this at all.

Sojiro gives the gang tickets to Skytree at Asakusa, which is a weird new scene to include when you’re this stretched for time, but the gang talks there about what happens if they fail and everyone turns against them. Ren picks up a model of the Skytree while he’s there, and he’s just lugging it around for the next scene when he returns to Leblanc and finds Sae leaving. Sojiro tells Ren about Wakaba’s research, but Ren already knows about cognitive psience because he overheard Sae and Sojiro discussing it in the previous episode, and also Makoto found a book on it in Futaba’s room.

Futaba then arrives at Leblanc, having already done the Medjed counterhack, which appears on the TV. We then cut to the interrogation room, where Sae is in disbelief about what Ren has told her about Wakaba and the group pursuing Futaba… for about five seconds before realizing it aligns perfectly with her own knowledge of events. After that is the party the gang throws to celebrate their success where they try to get to know Futaba (and largely fail). We haven’t seen this yet in the Royal LP. The main note I have about it is that Ryuji yells “Futaba, you are one seriously rad chick!” to which Morgana responds with an unbelievably irate, “Shut up, Ryuji!” Cat needs to chill. The gang leaves and Sojiro takes Futaba and Ren to get sushi, where Futaba tells Ren that her mother was murdered and she’s going to find the culprit.

We also get the first post-credits scene in a few episodes of Morgana eagerly anticipating sushi (that we know from the game he will never receive).

One thing I learned from the Thieves' Den, and thankfully failed to notice in my own playthrough, is that that's Cognitive Ann in Kamoshida's wine glass. She spends the entire battle in there, except for a brief detour into his mouth during the animation of Lustful Slurp. I'd prefer if the game just never pointed this out.

That's kind of a weird change; it's pretty clear that Sojiro knows you've been intruding on Futaba and elects to ignore it once he realizes it's on her initiative.

At this rate, I half-expect you to have side updates about Persona 5: Dancing All Night and Persona Q2.

Man as someone who loved Persona Q, Persona Q2 just didn't land for me. And this is despite mechanical/balance improvements, because juggling 25 party members when you only have 5 party slots and no backline exp is just silly. Even then, the story/character development feels... bleh.

The thing that turned me off PQ2 really hard was having fewer Sub-Persona slots than I had possible party members, which made it an absolute chore to gently caress with my party.

I never got out of the second labyrinth, which is a shame because I really wanted to see where the FeMC stuff went when the P3 cast came into the mix.

Did I mention that you can only have one navigator slot too? So Fuuka/Rise/Futaba are also all fighting for that slot.

Honestly the worst part is just that with such an oversized group, there's not a lot of time for the personalities to bounce off each other. You have some good stuff going (like I think there's some Shinjiro/Akechi stuff, which is interesting), but most of the cast just gets drowned out by each other once they start meeting up. PQ1 at least had two separate routes so there were basically two storylines each with differing focuses even if the general plot is the same.

If you don't mind spoilers, it's basically she remembers everyone, everyone doesn't remember her but they get a 'wow, I still feel like I can really depend on you the same way as Male!MC'. So, standard alternate timeline stuff, I guess.

I never wound up playing Q2, so it's good to hear they learned nothing from the first game and preserved the lack of bench EXP that would alleviate the cast bloat. :shepicide:

I imagine it was in service of selling some EXP Boosting DLC like the later Etrian titles.

Well, they toned down some of the broken combos; Binds, Links and Fuuka's Healing Breeze are less effective, you can't just Hama/Mudo your way through dungeons (sorry Naoto), and they tweaked the physical-magical balance, which was hilariously lopsided in favour of physical in Q1. It's basically a, uh, 'fairer' game.

Except of course they still didn't fix most of the issues like again bloated cast with no way of getting backliners up to par without swapping them in. The story's also, in my opinion, worse; the themes are very heavily repeated between labyrinths which is kinda lame, since in Q1 they had some variety in story beats.

But it does have a good OP. Honestly the Q2's tracks are pretty great, and there's four different regular battle tracks now (P3, P4, P5, FeMC), so there's that I guess.

Q2 would be less of a slog to LP compared to Q1 since there's only one route but... I don't know if I can handle it. It's just a worse game in my opinion.

Chapter 111: 8/22: Getting To Know The Family

This update contains content from Part 90 of the original LP.

Daytime

Music: Wicked Plan

To think the cognitive version of a person would transform into such a horrible monster and attack us…

Huh? Yusuke, that was like three weeks ago. I mean, we never really decompressed after that, so I *guess* we can talk about it now, but…
It’s interesting though… depending on how the Palace ruler sees them, a cognition can vary wildly in form and strength.
Hope we don’t gotta worry ‘bout that ever again…
Futaba’s mother was studying cognitive psience, yes? It must have something to do with the Metaverse.
(shouting through cupped hands) GEE, HOWDJA FIGURE?
It’s not just that. Some shady folks might have stolen her research after showing Futaba that fake suicide note.

Hey, Futaba. Is there anything else you can remember?

She is quite difficult…

Maybe she can sense your cop aura and is just wisely choosing to avoid incriminating herself.

*slurp*
……
Now, Futaba, did you bring enough to share with the class?
*sluuuuuuurp*

…Meanie.
Why don’t we take a short break?

Music: Suspicion

Even if Futaba is a genius, could she really crush an international hacker organization that quickly?

Yes.
Uhh… How?
Because I founded Medjed.
Seems reasonable. No further questions.
It wasn’t always a collective. Some people started using the name after I did and it was too much of a pain to expose them all, so I dropped that identity for Alibaba.
Anyway… Since you know our identities, it’d be nice if you joined our team, Futaba.
……
Wait, Makoto. Remember, you’re not trustworthy. I’ll make the offer. *ahem* Futaba, since you know our identities, it’d be nice if you joined our team.

‘Kay.

That’s exactly what I—oh, never mind. This will be advantageous for our investigation of Mementos.
Futaba’ll be a big help!

Say, Futaba. How did you find out about us?
Secret.
Where did you learn to hack?
Private.
When did you obtain the Nav?
I refuse to answer.

And she already knows not to answer questions from the police! This is perfect! We’re gonna get along great!

Still, it’ll be a problem if she doesn’t open up to us some more.
At the very least, we need to be able to communicate normally with her.
What should we do?

Music: Alright

Let’s spend the next several days agonizingly acclimating her to social contact. I’m already kind of avoiding most of you in the afternoon anyway, so it’s not like I’ve got anything better to do.
Oh, that reminds me. I keep putting off that fake double date with Eiko and her host boyfriend because you’re not hot enough. You should really work on that.
Way ahead of you, babe. I’ll get at least 25% sleazier.
That was a good idea, though. We need Futaba to open up to us. If we spend a lot of time around her, maybe she’ll get used to our presence.

…!?

We can begin tomorrow.
We can go to the beach! There’ll be tonsa people there, plus we got totally dried out in that desert.
That’s a great idea! I forgot I hadn’t gone to the beach yet!
Uh, excuse me…?
I’ll come by tomorrow. See you then.
Let me help as well. I don’t have anything planned.

We all assumed that, Yusuke.

Thanks. We can set a schedule with everyone else depending on when they’re free.
Okay!

If not, it’ll at least be extremely funny.

Music: Disquiet

Shut the gently caress up or I’ll make you eat that stupid loving pinstripe tie, Akechi. God, I’m getting sexually harassed by a seventeen year old. This is my life…
……
Close your maw before you start drooling, you child. Didn’t expect me to fight back? Well, I get enough of that sexist poo poo from the SIU Director, I don’t need it from a toddler.
What was his name again? I keep forgetting.
No one knows his name. It has been deleted from man’s collective cultural memory. To learn it is to forget it. Now, what do you want?
…Right. Well, uh… sorry. I see you’re a bit testy today, given what occurred with those hackers.
Of course I am! People think we’re incompetent, not being able to deal with them ourselves. Those Phantom Thieves are claiming justice again, and we’re left to twist in the wind. It’s absurd!
Be it from their own actions or those of a supporter, the Phantom Thieves have won the day by dealing with Medjed.

They’re gaining support and influence much faster than we could have anticipated…
It is indeed an abnormal situation. I’m beginning to suspect mass manipulation of some kind… It’s even possible that a powerful person is behind them, plotting the psychotic breakdowns…

If only I had realized sooner! *snrk* *giggle*

It’s rare to hear you speak in that tone.
For the sake of my justice… I won’t forgive them.

Sounds ominous, but also, I don’t care enough to ask.

Daytime → Evening

Music: Beneath the Mask

They were saying how awesome they think the Phantom Thieves are!
I’ve heard things too. It’s becoming a huge topic of conversation.
To be fair, the casualties from a Medjed attack would have been massive. It’s no surprise they revere us for preventing it.

>Oh nooooo, all the poor casualties of a Medjed attack, how terrrrrrrrrible. Geez, you guys are acting like they were gonna bomb a hospital. They were probably just going to make some numbers go away, big whoop.
If that’s what you think, maybe I should go un-hack them right now.
>Please don’t.

Oh, that reminds me… Remember that stuff about ATMs and banks just stopping? That wasn’t Medjed, was it?
Nope, that was totally separate.
So people were overreacting to mere coincidence?

>Perish the thought.

Either that or those rumors were never true to begin with.
Hm, you seem to be quite talkative in these conversations.
Is that so? I’ll shut up then.
:|
?
>:C
I don’t think I get it, but I’m pretty sure she’s angry…
You gotta apologize, Yusuke.
Me? Why?
:U
Hey, is this really going to be okay? I’m worried about how things will be from now on…

This definitely proves the justice of the Phantom Thieves!

>Eh, they’re okay, I guess.

It feels great. Even the guys who had been criticizing the Phantom Thieves basically have to accept them now! The news has been spreading like wildfire too. I’ll give it an extra boost on my site as well. I bet the approval rating will be through the roof tomorrow. Look forward to it!
…Why is he of all people getting excited about this?

He lives vicariously through us, Morgana. All those posts online give him the good brain chemicals. Wait… Didn’t we already have this conversation like two months ago?

Well, the news really did draw a lot of attention. I can’t wait to see what happens.

Temperatures are rising across the country, marking the hottest days we’ve had this summer. Today’s temperature is at a record high and many are escaping the heat by playing in the water. Throngs of people could be seen at the beach near the city, enjoying the summer weather.
You have to go to the beach in the summer! We should go!

(Young Male Customer) It’s not worth going to any beaches in Japan. They’re cramped and dirty, there’s jellyfish…
What about a beach outside of Japan? Let’s go on a vacation on a tropical island!
We don’t have to go now, right? It’s absurd to go somewhere hot in the middle of summer.

Dude, your girlfriend/fiancé/wife wants to spend time with you, and you keep shooting her down. Girl, ditch this rear end in a top hat.

(Innocent Grade Schooler) Mine say the same thing! My mom said not to get all proud and arrogant and stuff…
Yeah, right. Don’t listen to her. Grown-ups lie all the time.
I know! My parents were supposed to take me to the zoo the other day, but they broke their promise!

(Reserved College Student) I wonder how they pulled it off… They really are amazing, huh.
Hey-ey, whatever happened to that Akechi dude? The Phantom Thieves buried that guy—total annihilation!

Reserved College Student: still a ghost.

(Elderly Office Worker) We should be relieved that nothing happened. What’s more ominous is the Phantom Thieves.
How so? I thought they did well this time…
Gaining power moves one closer to becoming an authoritarian. That’s just the way of the world.

Ah, I see this random salaryman is actually a left-wing anarchist who doesn’t believe power can ever be wielded responsibly. A learned man, for sure.

Depression and suicide are on the rise, and the young workforce is being crushed on a daily basis. The evil that permeates the corporate world has filtered down into society…
Yoshida is taking his election speeches seriously… I formed a partnership with Yoshida as comrades. I should avoid interrupting his campaign.

Your result in this drawing is… …… ……! Congratulations! You’ve won 30,000 yen. Let me get that to you right now.

Oh hey, not the top prize, but a decent sum nevertheless.

Oh, you got it! I can give you advice on what to use it for!

No, you can’t.

You see that a lot, these days. I mean, what could possibly be so interesting?
(Rookie Station Attendant) I bet they’re reading Phantom Thieves fansites. People are really into them!
Makes sense. It’s all the media seems to talk about, these days. Wonder how long this fad’ll last.

(Sullen Office Worker) Yes, I think so. Nothing bad actually happened, so it looks like we’ll all be safe.
They admitted their wrongdoing on their own. If our own superiors could do that too, it’d be real nice.
Hahaha, that’d be great. It’d be even better if that happened in every company.

(Foreign Barker) The Phantom Thieves are awesome! They’re like a manga come to life! But, I mean—we can’t rely on them for everything, right?
Huh? Why not? Stop lecturing us!

They’re really somethin’ else. I wanna apprentice with ‘em.
(Adorable Woman) I’m glad you’re finally getting it.
Yup. Lemme get ya somethin’ nice from the gift store back home, to show I’m sorry.
I take it back. You clearly don’t get it yet!

(Aproned Man) Not even the Phantom Thieves can change your drunken heart.
*hiccup* Ha, that’s funny. Wish they’d take my liver instead! I’m gonna post on the Phan-Site one of these days. What would your request be, pops?
Hmm, let’s see… How about something like “I’d like some more affection from my wife”?

(Thin-Voiced Woman) I keep hearing about that. Is it really that big a deal?
(Deep-Voiced Woman) I dunno, but just imagine Phantom Thieves that can change the hearts of evil men! That just sounds amazing! They’ve gotta be so hot, too!

Yes. I agree.

(Thin-Voiced Woman) “Hot”? How would you know what they look like?
(Deep-Voiced Woman) Well, I don’t. But if they’re Phantom Thieves, they’ve got to be capital-H HOT!

My next request is the trending and limited-edition Melon Pan. It’s apparently all the rage with female students and workers in the Shibuya area. So you’re gonna have to go to Shibuya, my man. I’ll trade you for this Old Man’s Fist. Thanks in advance.

The Old Man’s Fist is a weapon for Makoto. As it happens, we recently picked up a Melon Pan from Yon-Germain next to the Ginza Line, so we can immediately give it to him.

Oh, it’s you! And you brought the Melon Pan! So you’ll trade it for my Old Man’s Fist, right?

Thank you! Now this Old Man’s Fist is yours.

So this Melon Pan can capture a woman’s heart… Crispy on the outside, but light and fluffy on the inside… Thanks, my man. Let’s trade again next time, yeah?

(Charismatic Manager) Don’t complain. I had payroll deduct a small amount from each paycheck to pay me back in installments. I hope you learned that value is more than what meets the eye.
Oh, I sure did… But now my dream life in Kichijoji seems so far away…

This is your chance to meet those mysterious superheroes, the “Phantom Thieves”! You interested?

Relax, this’ll only take a second. Just a few seconds, okay? We’re celebrating Medjed’s fall with a party event: An Evening Chat with the Phantom Thieves. Of course, the Phantom Thieves will show up as well! It’ll be a fancy dinner at not a bad price!

What? You scared of the Phantom Thieves showing up? What are you, chicken? Well, in that case, go home already, kid! Geez, I’m wastin’ my breath here!

The alternate responses for that dialogue chain are either completely identical or so close to identical I didn’t bother including them.

(Show-Biz Veteran) Making my dream—OUR dream—come true is a heavy burden… I wasn’t able to shoulder that.
Yeah… You’re right, Mr. Asakura. I gotta work hard for the both of us! Okay! I’ll do it!

Noooooo…

Hurry back to your prison!

We need to do a little Persona maintenance in the ol’ Velvet Room.

Music: Aria of the Soul

First thing we’re going to do is fuse Kaiwan from Kurama Tengu and Take-Minakata.

I will become a new mask, and in doing so, change your fate…

According to the Book of Amos, Kaiwan was a deity worshipped by some of the Israelites. His official description in this game is “A god in Assyrian legend, his name is interchangeable with Sakkut, another incarnation of the star-god, Saturn.” That probably explains why he’s a big star. That’s legitimately the most interesting thing I was able to find about this guy, unless you’re really into the idea of people mispronouncing his name on purpose to make it basically a curse word. I’m making that sound funnier than it is, it’s honestly pretty lame.

The next skill this Kaiwan would learn is Psiodyne, which I really, really want, so I’m going to go use the Gallows for the first time in this run. We’ll sacrifice Setanta to strengthen Kaiwan.

Now, when we use the Gallows, the receiving Persona will gain a skill from the Persona that was sacrificed. Unfortunately, my capture card glitched and I lost all footage of the precious few seconds this was onscreen. For the record, the skill was Dazzler, and I swapped it in to replace Marakukaja.

While I’m at it, I’d like a Tarukaja skill card, so I sacrifice Eligor to make one.

Next fusion: Thoth from Principality and Sandman. I need to make sure to carry over Tetraja from Principality, because this is another step in fusing the Lachesis I need for the current Strength request.

I shall become your new mask and work to unleash your inner power.

Thoth is the Egyptian god of the moon (plus “equilibrium” and “balance”, whatever that entails), but he had many roles, including settling disputes between gods and was the one in charge of literally maintaining the universe. He was also associated with wisdom, magic, science, and writing, and measuring time. He gave Isis the power to resurrect Osiris after he was killed by Set(h).

Now that that’s done, let’s finally fuse Lachesis from Thoth and Anzu, remembering to give her Tetraja.

The thread of fate is measured by my hand… I am the mask which determines your future…

Lachesis is the middle sister of the three sisters of Fate in Greek mythology. She was the one who determined how much thread (life) each mortal was apportioned. She also chose each person’s destiny.

Before we step out and initiate the next Strength rank, we’ve got a bit more fusion to do. We’ll turn Anubis into a Makouga skill card.

We’ll conclude by fusing Lilim from Pisaca and Ara Mitama. Hopefully we can get her a coat or something, because you are not going out dressed like that, young lady!

I’ll leave the realm of dreams for a while and become your mask…

Lilim are demons similar to succubi that are believed to kidnap children. They also seduce men caught in their gaze, draining them of their essence. Gross.

Time to go turn in this Strength request.

Looks like you’re getting the hang of this. Well, that’s another assignment done…

Strength Rank 7: Part 99

No difficult questions, Justine. Just give him his assignment.
Understood.
Huh? What’s with you? You’re not normally this cooperative.

I have no intention of forsaking my duty… but I still seek the truth of this quandary. This mysterious list foretelling this current state of affairs, with familiar penmanship… this nostalgia… the unclear intent of its creator… What do they mean?
I said no difficult questions!
I think I have come to a hypothesis, however. You see… we represent the Strength arcana… Great power, a mighty will, and the awakening of the unknown.
Yeah, we’re really badass. What are you getting at?
I believe that the Inmate is not the only one to have had something awaken within him during our interactions.
Hey, I don’t really understand what we’re talking about. Can you either give me my reward or beat me up like usual? Whichever.
No reward yet, Inmate! One more task! Now shut up!
If you keep progressing through this list, I feel it will make everything clear…

I feel like my bond with Caroline and Justine is growing deeper…

You got that? A Hecatoncheires that knows Masukunda!

Music: Beneath the Mask

This is the first day Sojiro’s Confidant becomes available again. Let’s celebrate by spending some time with him.

Thanks. Futaba’s coming to eat today too.

Hierophant Rank 5: Part 96

Music: Break it Down

How was the curry, Futaba?
Delicious! I’m gonna be dreaming of that stuff tonight!
Um… did it taste the same as you remember it?
Yup. I feel like a dummy for not wanting to eat it back when I was depressed about my mom…

My heart is now forged of steel, and my stupid dead mom can’t hurt it anymore. Worth it for the curry!

…Oh yeah! The first episode of this brand-new anime I wanna watch is airing tonight! I’m outta here!
Eyes in front when you walk, okay? No spacing out. You ran head first into a pole last time you went for a walk…

Considering she was a shut-in until extremely recently, that must have happened, what? Today?

Well you stubbed your toe on the dresser the other day!

That sounds most humorous. You must regale me with the story on a later occasion.

Aw crap! It’s gonna start! Making like a leaf, and—Eh, screw it. Bye!

And what about you?

No dad, what about *you!?*
……
Sorry, always wanted to say that. For real though, it’s really good. Now, please feed me something else. I’m dying of malnutrition.
Thanks. But also, no.

Now then… there’s something I should probably tell you. Here, take a seat. I’ll pour you come coffee.

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

Weird glitch in this scene: when Maaku puts the cup down, the animation for the cup desyncs from his hand.

Remember how I said the recipe for this curry was developed by a scientific genius? You might’ve realize by now, but that genius was Futaba’s mother… Wakaba.

You’re right, I did realize that.

In other words, that curry is one of the last remaining connections Futaba has to her mom.

…Oh. That’s… huh.

I first met Wakaba back when I was doing work for the government. She was real trouble, let me tell you. Logic prevailed over emotion for her, and she had an intricate knowledge of the human mind.

Sojiro, I’m not gonna lie to you. You’re making her sound kind of insufferable.
Heh… I thought I was the slickest guy in town, but not a single one of my pick-up lines worked on her…
Oh, so you really were a player. I thought it was just some weird front. I guess I can see it, though I’m less convinced that there was ever a time in human history that any woman responded well to a pick-up line.
Well, men are idiots… I was chasing after something I couldn’t ever get. She rejected me every time… though I did manage to surprise her once and once only… when I gave her a plate of my homemade curry.

The very next day she came asking all about the ingredients and what goes into the cooking process… Then just a few days later, she handed me a scientifically-enhanced version of my recipe. …It was incredible. She had used my curry as the basis, but it was miles better than anything I had made.

From then on, curry was Wakaba’s specialty. Futaba quickly grew to love it.

But then after Wakaba’s accident… Futaba stopped eating it entirely. The flavor would make her remember the pain… I’ve heard even smells can bring back memories too.

But I couldn’t just stop making it… the curry was the only real connection I had to Futaba, even if indirect. When I took her in, I vowed to keep the recipe alive until she could enjoy it again.
That was a long story, but I’m glad there’s a happy ending. Except the part where Wakaba’s still dead, I guess.
Having Futaba say it was delicious feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. It happened a bit more abruptly than I was expecting though… I thought it’d take some re-acclimation, but she dove right back into it.
Yes… how curious indeed. Probably nothing.

The whole idea of pairing the curry with a nice brew is thanks to Wakaba’s refinement too. Despite how introverted she seemed, she was extraordinarily perceptive of the people around her… I never even told her about my love of coffee. She figured it out just from looking at me…

Knowing you now, I doubt it was actually that hard to figure out.

That was when I realized she was totally out of my league. Not like I really stood a chance to begin with though. She already had Futaba by then, after all. This might seem like any old curry to most people, but there’re tons of emotions crammed inside. So, uh… make sure you keep the tradition going.

Sure thing, Dad.
Huh?
What? What? I didn’t say anything.
……

I feel like my bond with Sojiro is growing deeper…

All right, that’s enough of this for tonight! Things are getting downright sappy in here. Futaba’s waiting for me at home too, so I should probably be heading back. Make sure you clean up before you go to bed.
I can see the compassion hidden beneath Sojiro’s actions… I feel my Kindness growing…

Maaku gains Kindness +2.

Yeah, the Kindness of making you clean up after him.

Futaba’s still watching anime. As long as she’s in a good mood, though, I don’t mind it.

…It’s only a problem when she asks for it three times a day.

Everyone needs a balanced diet. Everyone. Including me.

I gotta be strict with her. She needs to eat balanced meals so she gets vitamins that curry can’t give her…

…Eh, forget it. Maybe I’ll have to stick with curry as the staple, but I can sneak in some veggies here and there. Heh… Guess cooking really is a labor of love. Ah… crap, I talk too much. See you later, I guess.

Music: Aria of the Soul

Good work saving that girl from her brain goblins, citizen. You have taken another step toward rehabilitation. That said, the issue of the stolen research is most concerning. What will you do about this?
Uhhhhhh… I dunno. Can I get, like, a hint?
Troublesome Inmate! Hold your tongue!
No. But take this new power. It shall aid you in your endeavors.

I feel like my bond with Igor is growing deeper…

Uh, where’s the new power?
Master, I believe you neglected to—

Sojiro mentions that she didn't regress to full "can't even leave her room" shut-in fairly recently, like not long before you arrived. It could have happened then, also!

Can you believe they actually took down hackers!?
It’s cool how they don’t reveal what they’re doing.
Who’s that guy that was criticizing them? Akechi?
It’s pretty lame to just criticize without doing anything yourself.

Music: Beneath the Mask

I haven’t seen them… What happened to them?

Morgana about to discover object permanence.

No. Also, what are you talking about?
Open the front door. We are outside.
Maaku, you come too. We’re in front of Futaba’s house.

You wanna meet here… and not at Leblanc?
Isn’t that more comforting?
Y-Y-You never mentioned this.

There’s something really weird about the way characters will incorporate verbal tics into their texting. Like, I sometimes write things out in the way I would say them for EMPHASIS, but I wouldn’t try to replicate stammering in a text message. I’m not going to say it’s “lazy,” because it’d have to be extremely egregious for that to ever be justified when talking about a creative endeavor of this scale, but it is kind of funny.

It would be nice if you could hurry down soon. It’s scorching hot out here.
You demon…!
Looks like we’re meeting up immediately over at Futaba’s. Makoto’s really going about this seriously…

Music: My Homie

One note about these Futaba scenes in this update and the ones coming up: they are voiced, whereas the original versions were not.

Don’t worry about it.
Such avant garde design. You have excellent taste.

Taking it off!

We’re just going to try to have a normal conversation. The bar could not possibly be lower. All right, Futaba, I’ll start by asking what you like to eat.
I only ingest soylent. It’s a meal replacement that comes in three blandalicious forms: bar, shake, and for the adventurous, powder.
……
That’s not true, Sojiro told me you eat his curry.
That’s the one exception.
…Let’s just change topics, okay? What about the weather?
What about it?
I mean, what do you think about it? This heat wave’s been brutal.
I dunno. I don’t really go outside, and it’s air-conditioned in here.
I coulda told you that, Makoto. Do we actually need to work on your social skills instead?
This is going badly… Yusuke, I need your support!
Hm?
What have you been doing over there, anyway?
…And, finished.

I fixed your display. This aesthetic arrangement is much more appealing.

W-Waaaaaaaah!

They appear to be quite shoddily-made.

The Featherman Rangers have been shredded to bits… Inari, how could you!?

Inari?
You know, inari sushi? The tofu things foxes eat in the old stories? What kind of Fox doesn’t know that?
Inari…

Do you have any idea how long it takes to pose them just right? Your “aesthetics” are bullshit, Inari!
Hm, I see. Maaku, permission to kill?
Not granted.

Sheesh, that’s not a conversation anymore… It’s a full-blown argument.
Yeah…

I see… So their versatility allows you to recreate almost any dramatic scene you can imagine.
Mm-hm. Victory is great for action, and Neo’s got the best transforming suit. So cool.
Fascinating. Art depicts a flash of inspiration, but models offer a much different means of enjoyment.
Huh? Take a look at that—Futaba’s having a regular conversation.

Shhhh, don’t let her realize that or she’ll lock up again.
No, it seems she’ll be fine talking as long as the topic interests her.

So this is all I gotta do? What a breeze!
In that case, we should advance to the next step. How about we have her spend time in someone else’s room?
Yes. She hasn’t had many chances to leave the house yet, so that would be the perfect opportunity.
Don’t set the bar so high!

Given that you were more reluctant to let us in here today, and you already spent some time in my room yesterday, I assumed that you felt was easier. Guess not. Well, buck up, we’re doing it anyway.
Rrgh… Fine…

I’ve left tomorrow to Ann and Ryuji. Maaku will be there as well, so you’ll be okay.
Can I wear my mask?

No.
But Makoto, it’d be really funny!

There’s really no telling how tomorrow’s going to go…

Daytime → Evening

Music: Beneath the Mask

She’s still got a long way to go, though. I wonder how long before she’s ready for the beach…

They’re talking all about how the Phantom Thieves took down Medjed. Mishima’s website has a shitton of comments flooding in too!
The news coverage has been pretty insane as well!

>That’s cool. The Futaba side of things is going well, also. Well, minus Yusuke’s act of vandalism.
My Phoenix Rangers…
They don’t need to know about that part. It wasn’t perfect, but it went well.

Tomorrow’s goal will be to spend time in someone else’s room. Futaba is a difficult personality to handle. Good luck, you two.
Shut it, Inari.
All right, it’s our turn next! Seeya tomorrow, Futaba!
We have so much to talk about! Ooh, I can’t wait!
Lady Ann and Ryuji teaming up honestly worries me… But I guess we’ll see what they can do.

Why does Ann worry you? Aren’t you in love with her?

As of now, the kind of damage they threatened has yet to be seen. Meanwhile, people on the internet are celebrating, calling this a victory for the Phantom Thiefves.
Whoa, this is huge! We won!

Now everyone’s describing them as saviors. Little much, don’t you think?
(Young Male Customer) No way, they really are. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Music: Layer Cake

We’re going to stop in at Untouchable tonight.

It’s ‘cause we sell merchandise that can’t take the heat. If it’s too cold for ya, layer up.

We won’t be working, though. It’s all-in on gun customization for us.

We’re going to buy this Comet 3 slingshot for Morgana. Unfortunately, there’s a better, more expensive slingshot down at the bottom here. I don’t know why the order got hosed up, but I don’t notice this in the moment and end up buying a worse slingshot for it. Oh well, we’re not going to be using this all that much, and certainly not for damage.

We’re going to customize it with Fire Camo, which causes it to inflict Burn on targets. This should make it a good source of Technical hits that Morgana can combo off with Wind. The three kinds of camo are Fire, Ice, and Electric, which inflict Burn, Freeze, and Shock respectively.

We’re also going to buy Ann a new SMG with a Power Receiver.

Finally, Makoto gets a revolver with Electric Camo. For whatever reason, the Fire and Ice camo patterns are unavailable for this gun.

Music: Beneath the Mask

Then maybe those stubborn old bureaucrats would have finally gotten the picture. Inefficient operations, useless “just try harder” philosophy… You can only get so far on “old-school” business practices!

(Doting Father) Hahaha, I hope you like it! My client said that he bought it in Shibuya! …Can I have a bite?

Music: Crossroads

Although I’d be pretty happy to let those records stay unbroken. Still, this time of year is the best for a nice, refreshing cold one.

Sorry, but let’s go somewhere else. You can give me the info later.

This is really annoying… Where is that idiot?

What do you think you’re doing, making me look all over the place for you!?

But… I’m always here.
Oh, shut up! Why isn’t your phone on? Are you up to something?
Whaaaaaat? Of course not! My battery must have run out, because I’m so committed to covering those wily Phantom Thieves!

You sure about that? I got a complaint from the higher-ups the other day. Apparently people have seen you snooping around recently… in places unrelated to the Phantom Thieves.
Th-That’s ridiculous… I’ve been hot on their trail lately.

That’s some pretty flimsy evidence of wrongdoing, I gotta say. Ohya’s not a dog. She’s allowed to go places.
Fine, I’ll tell you what I’ve been doing. But you need to keep it a secret, okay? Promise.
I refuse. Tell me anyway.

The truth is… I’m in a relationship with this kid.

A very good question! Ohya, explain yourself!

Yup. That’s why I’m being so discreet about it. Who knows what laws we might be breaking.

I feel like it’s extremely obvious what laws that would break.
Ohya, I should fire you just for the shoddy craftsmanship of that lie. Christ. Just resign, okay? If you don’t do it within the next week, I’ll handle things myself.
B-But I really am… Maaku, tell him…
*sigh* Yep, we’re dating. Goddammit.

See? We’ve had to be extra secretive about it ‘cause his high school has strict rules about dating adults.

It’s a good rule to have.
Wha—? You’re not blackmailing this kid, are you? You don’t exactly have the physique to be pulling high school kids…

H-Hey, that’s sexual harassment!

Plus, even if it’s true, why would I keep you employed after hearing tha—Oh, gently caress it, whatever, just… shut up, everyone! I’m going home, I hate you all! Keep up with your deadlines or you’re *absolutely* fired, and keep your nose out of your partner’s case or I’ll loving kill you! Bye!

Music: My Homie

I cannot believe that worked. In fact, I’d honestly prefer it hadn’t.

Thanks. That guy is one of the execs over at my job. Arrogant bastard, ain’t he? He’s the kind of guy all the girls at a bar would instantly turn down.

He didn’t actually seem *that bad*, though I’m probably just grading on a curve since the only other person I’ve interacted with in the last ten minutes involved me in a pedophilia ruse.

Anyway… that was a real surprise. Not only are you a good source of info, you’re not half bad as an actor either.

I really don’t wanna talk about it.

You’re honestly the type of guy I’d wanna grab drinks with after work… Too bad you’re underage.

You’re making this so much worse, Ohya.
I feel like my bond with Ohya is growing deeper… God knows why…

Well, I guess that’s it for today. Don’t stop in any weird shops on your way home, okay?
I feel like pretending to be lovers with Ohya increased my Charm

Maaku gains Charm +2.

Ah gently caress, now we have to hang out with Makoto again.

Hopefully you at least got some wicked side-eye, though.

You seem like a handy kid to know. Expect another call from me soon—I could use the help! And I’ll repay you with the power of journalism, of course. I’ll write you a solid article on the Phantom Thieves.

That’s a lot of snacks… Well, at least we won’t go hungry.

I think I played a visual novel like this once.

Wh-Whoa! poo poo freaked me out… That you, Futaba?
Yup. Welcome.
Why are you wearing that?

Not sure I get it… but let’s do this!
Sheesh. Looks like today’s going to be another noisy day…

So this one time—

I didn’t even say anything yet!
You were about to tell some big story about picking up some girl, right? I repeat, lies.
N-No.

Aha! He admits it!
Wait, that’s not—
VIR-GIN! VIR-GIN! VIR-GIN!

Yeah, she doesn’t have any trouble speaking her mind. Seems totally normal to me.

Futaba gained experience! Futaba leveled up!
As soon as we can get her to stop doing that, we’ll be golden!
Aww…

By the way, what’s on the agenda for tomorrow?
How about we have her try helping around the café?
That’s perfect! It’ll be good practice to have her up in front of strangers.
Eep…! Nope, nope, nope! Showing up in the shop at lunchtime’ll be like, super-crushing hard mode!

I actually agree with her. This feels like we’re escalating a bit too quickly.
It’ll be fine, don’t worry.
She bit me earlier.
Huh!?
He said he didn’t like Gurren Lagann!
Oh, that’s fine then.
The entire second half is bad!
You’re bad!
Oh yeah, really love that episode where all the side characters line up single file to get headshot. Great storytelling, there! I was not even aware this was that controversial! The ending sucks!
Ryuji, hold him down. I’ll put him out of his misery.
Roger.
Hold on, this was not what we were talking about. Working at Leblanc, right? Whatever, let’s just try it.

Then it’s all set. We’ll be rootin’ for you, Futaba!
Grrr… You’re all gonna pay for this someday…

Star Rank 6: Part 87

…The digital version of the weekly magazine.

Music: Suspicion

They reported everything… My father’s deteriorating health, and even that my mother works at a night club to support us… It’s not untrue… But was it really necessary for them to publish it? It’s cruel to capitalize on my family’s misfortune, and it has nothing to do with my shogi skills. My mother was furious, as you can probably imagine.
Yeah, she seemed decidedly unchill when I encountered her last time. Er, no offense.
This hasn’t stopped my mother’s push for me to gain fame, though. If anything, it’s strengthened it. She wants me to do more interviews to quell the rumors.
I don’t think that’s how that works… but I’m sure that must be frustrating for you.
It is… though I can’t express that to my mother. I don’t want to be treated like an idol. People already say I’m all looks and no skills, and that I’m just trying to get famous… That’s the reason I have to practice in the church… No one else will play with me. If I quit shogi, will this all stop? Will my family stop getting hurt?
There’s only one question that matters: do you still love shogi?

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

Of course I do… I love shogi… I don’t want to quit.

Well, there you go. I still don’t really understand shogi or even really know how to play it, but if it makes you happy, you should stick with it.

Yes… You’re right. You understand my true feelings. At the end of the day, I love shogi. I’d never be able to give it up. I was just confused because of that article and how my senior treated me… However, I think I can see my next move… thanks to you. …You’re helping me realize a lot about myself, outside of shogi.
I can sense a deep bond of trust from Hifumi…

…Let’s return to the church and play a match. That article has left me somewhat irritated.

I will unleash the power of time travel and turn my enemy’s pieces into masses of person-shaped gelatin.

…Well? Would you care to face me in a match?

Sure thing.

I feel like playing shogi with Hifumi has helped sharpen my Knowledge

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

Thank you for joining me. Until next time…

Thank you so much for accompanying me today. I needed the distraction. Trying to solve this on my own, I felt caught in a vicious cycle… but you helped me find a new path. …You might make a fine priest yourself. Considering how good a listener you are, I mean.

You really are a strange individual. I was supposed to be your teacher, but somehow, the tables have turned. I’m the one learning from you. I would love to keep learning from you. Well then, if you’ll excuse me. I’ll see you at the church.

The elemental camouflages are restricted on a per-gun bases, most of them can only be customized with one or even none. I don't know if there's any discernible logic behind which gun can get which camo.

The exception being Morgana's slingshots; most (all?) of them will take any elemental camo. Also not sure what the logic is there, but it's a nice viability boost for our cat friend.
