Looking for recommendations on a good coffee grinder. I’m tired of shackling myself to preground roasts (re: I need a steady stream of Ethiopian into my gullet and it’s always whole bean). Also, most nice roasts are ground a bit too fine for my pour over.

Pulled out of my driveway this morning as someone turned the corner and apparently stomped their accelerator. I got up to 25 mph and they flew up on me probably 20 miles an hour faster than that and tailgated me. So I slowed down to 15 and drove that for a mile while they went crazy behind me. Eat poo poo, my kids play in the front yard and this is a residential street. He flipped me off when I turned. I win.

So somehow my house is one of the only ones in my neighborhood with power right now, which is pretty rad. And the power is out at work too, so my morning is looking up!

You at the very least are looking for a burr grinder so you can adjust the grain. The typically recommended gold standard for a home burr grinder is the Baratza Encore. They're spendy though, around $170. My home setup currently uses an Oxo Brew. It's about $100 and works very well. https://www.oxo.com/conical-burr-coffee-grinder.html If you don't already have them, I recommend a good waterproof scale that measures in 0.1 gram increments and a good gooseneck kettle. We've used this Bonavita for years and it's outstanding. https://a.co/d/7HaL1j3

Seconding the OXO. We've had that model for a few years and it works great.

That episode is really really great. The 5th episode is also really good, and the head writer says he thinks the second to last episode is on par with the 3rd. I was kind of over zombie shows but this one is fantastic. On to Picard episode 2, hoping it at least waits another couple weeks to poo poo itself like last season.

Fellow just released the Opus grinder, which looks like a pretty good intro grinder that can do everything from espresso to French press grinds. The Ode was pretty good and specifically designed for non-espresso but it’s 60 bucks more expensive. If you think you might get into espresso at some time in the future it’s probably a good jumping off point. (Don’t get into espresso it will eat up all your money)

It's still snowing, but I had to clear a path for my wife to get up to the house after working last night, so here's some before and (mostly) after. We got an inch or so dusting on Monday, so that's what is on the driveway in these befores: After that I ran the shovel down twice to clear a path for tires so there wouldn't be compacted snow under the Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday dump. We got 3-4 inches Tuesday night, then Wednesday afternoon it started again with the foot(ish or so) that's still coming down now. There is an assortment of old pavement and rock next to the new pavement for that section of the driveway, so I couldn't get the fiberglass poles in place to mark where it is. Had been doing pretty well, but I legitimately had a hard time trying to figure out where exactly to clear this morning with all the blowing and drifting. At one point it's still only cleared to about 1.05 car widths, but my wife made it up, so whatever.

The good news is the rest of the episodes are also very well made; there's a bit of a drop but that's only because ep 3 was such an all-timer. At a certain point though, "ok what's this week's massive gut punch going to be" will get old.

Thanks for the recs. That OXO looks good and about my speed. I usually just use our pour over device but we have a French press I use sometimes too. Grinds are always a little wonky and I hate grinding in a grocery store. Plus Costco had a decent whole bean coffee selection I’d like to enjoy.

FB marketplace is good for stuff like that, yeah. Also companies are still downsizing their office spaces so if there’s a company near you that resells used office equipment that can be a place to get a good deal.

Got three of our folks at my office "new" office chairs. $500 for the three "X Chair" Chairs, all with zero signs of use... from a doctors office that shut down... and they were $800+ brand new when I googled them before purchase. That's some serious depreciation for a relatively new product, ya know? Who the hell buys new.

Some of the episodes have no zombies in them at all, and at least one other just barely has them included.

I think buying ergonomic chairs used is a bit different than buying like, used dish ware or whatever. It’s still worth exploring because used gets massive discounts, but you also want to make sure the chair is actually suiting your needs.

A lot of "ergonomic" chairs are just fancy looking and have a lot of levers but are not actually well suited to the particular person who is going to sit in them and some of them are straight up bad for you. There's no like regulatory body forcing manufacturers to only advertise chairs approved by an orthopedic council as "ergonomic." There is no substitute for actually trying out chairs, and this is one of the advantages of buying used: you get to go sit in the used chair before you buy it. My company paid for a consultation with an ergonomic expert who then selected the parts to assemble a custom ergo chair for me. That is obviously not affordable if you have to pay for it yourself but my god was it a good way to go for me, given my preexisting back pain and the fact I sit here at this desk for like 12+ hours a day five days a week.

I've sat in an Embody before and liked it a lot, although I really want the Logitech gaming edition one because it has extra padding and I like how the cyan back looks.

I bought my Herman Miller Sayl new but only because they aren’t that common, especially in the colorway I wanted. If you’re getting something like an Aeron or a Steelcase, though, buy it used if your employer isn’t footing the bill. But also, an Aeron is useless if you don’t have an ergonomics coach or w/e telling you how to set it up. The seating in one of our conference rooms is all Aerons that were left over from the last tenant and it’s the worst place to have a meeting. None of the chairs are set up the same and it’s impossible to figure out which knob or switch to twiddle to make it work for you.
