The KF-21 doesn't exist because of a need for F-35s, it exists because the US wouldn't sell them the F-22. That's the capability they're gunning for, not the export approved economy model

Germany again holding up military exports, this time A400M. https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/airbus-defence-arm-says-berlin-delaying-exports-worth-billions-2023-02-19/ It's not clear who they're taking about. Kazakhstan and Indonesia have previously confirmed orders but deliveries are due 2024 & 2026 respectively. If it's new countries, it's a good sign that with platform maturity, it's turning out to be a useful platform and not a elephant too big and expensive to succeed in numbers. Everyone really needs it to succeed enough to keep the production line going until the original operators wear out their originals and come back for more.

Pablo Bluth posted:I was speaking generally. Korea already have 40 F-35As. They're one of a bunch of countries who have experienced the F-35 programme first hand and seem to have decided they don't want to be dependant on the US for the next gen. The way I heard it explained is that the rational for doing F-35 and your own deal is that the F-35 is a 50 year commitment. If you go all in on F-35 then you lose all organic combat aircraft design knowledge and industrial base or it at least significantly atrophies. Which is great for the US MIC but not so good if you want to hedge your bets a bit.

Sorry, we can't provide you with anymore F-35s for a bit. You see, Alabama makes this one bolt, and Colorado makes the nut that goes with that bolt. But Colorado opened a transgender book store, and three representatives from Alabama blew it up and now they are at war. So it will be at least six weeks until we get that sorted.

Your timeline is WAY too fast. I once ordered a USB Type A inside a MIL 38999 (extremely common) housing. This was an off the shelf part. Lead time was 6 months. This was pre COVID/Trump.

Some people might want a backseater for some missions but I think the USAF perspective is it's not needed. Meanwhile developing a two seat variant would make an already complicated jet with three variants even more complex. My guess is that lengthening the cockpit and keeping it stealthy would not be possible without a lot of added cost.

I wonder if they want that line space and talent for something else. Has there been any news on who is making NGAD? I assume its one of if not a mix of Boeing/Lockheed/Northrop, but a casual googling makes it sound like it still not known.

I don't think anything has really been announced, but these programs are so massive and expensive that it'll end up being all three. The question is really just what the percentage each of them owns. I expect Boeing will actually build the thing, since Lockmart's facilities are already busy.
