I bought a ticket for the 20 year anniversary show at the Anthem in September which I kind of regret because tickets were so expensive that I didn't buy a second ticket, and going to shows along makes me kind of sad.

I also saw that a 20th year anniversary vinyl record went on sale yesterday which I bought.

FWIW “huge indie band weirdly not coming to Chicago” usually means they’re actually a Pitchfork headliner.

The word on the street is that they're likely playing Pitchfork or another music festival in Chicago this summer

Like everyone else, I was pretty bummed when Isaac left Black Country New Road, but goddamn the direction they're going in without him is great too.

In other very exciting news, Tiny Ruins has just announced a new album, coming April. She's one of NZ's best and most under-rated songwriters, and the new single is really good.

They announced the openers for the tour too. I'm getting Warpaint :hellyeah: The Beths would have been cool too.

Definitely would rather see this as its own show vs. Pitchfork (if they end up playing).

Personally my biggest surprise with Chvrches was with their 3rd album and they attempted to go for a more mainstream / imagine dragons type radio sound. If it weren't for the last album and their song on Death Stranding, I would've written them off by now.

Screen Violence is by far the best thing Chvrches has ever put out. They always had bops but the songwriting and lyricism were just so much more mature. Because of this I believe that Lauren Mayberry should continue living in LA even though it's clearly making her miserable.

Martin's energy whenever he sings his tracks is so infectious. His songs live are guaranteed crowd pleasers. By the way, he was originally supposed to sing We Sink on their first LP. Here's a BBC Radio 1 session where he's singing the lead:

"...and the light is on and burning brightly for the masses."
Fallen Rib
I listened to Chvrches' catalog yesterday and it reinforced my position that nothing they have done since The Bones of What You Believe has been as good. Maybe I'm just older and their newer stuff doesn't resonate with me as much anymore, but The Bones of What You Believe also has a menace, rancor, and woundedness I haven't been able to really place in their later work. And it's just banger after banger like nothing I've ever heard — "Gun"? "Lies"? "Recover"? I have no idea how they came up with those and they still impress me.

Since then, I feel like their sound has gotten generic and too many cliched lyrics strike my ear. I definitely recognize repeated patterns or phrases in some of my favorite bands, but seems like Chvrches has aged into this pretty quickly (maybe a result of a record deal they were trying to fulfil?). Examples for me: "I will tell you no lies" repeated in "Never Ending Circles" and "Miracle" (their most egregiously generic song) and the monotonous synth riff and chorus in "Bury It."

I am a fan of the band as people and don't want to come off as dragging them too hard. I agree that Screen Violence was an improvement, but it's just been disappointing waiting for something that blew me away as much as their debut.

Concerning Martin's vocals, "High Enough to Carry You Over" is easily one of the best things they've ever done. It's the sense of surprise I feel when I still listen to that track that I miss.

This is the most engaged I've been with the National lyrically in a while, I still don't think they're doing it for me musically anymore but if the whole album is a Kozelek style stream of conscious like this it would be pretty interesting and get me listening at least.

Song Machine Volume 1 was really good but he should’ve treated it like an actual album release and not a compilation project.

But SM1 gave me real hope for an upturn in Gorillaz’ quality but it looks like we’re back to Humanz era quality. 😔
