Rageaholic posted:Give Up by The Postal Service (one of my all-time favorite albums) turns 20 today I bought a ticket for the 20 year anniversary show at the Anthem in September which I kind of regret because tickets were so expensive that I didn't buy a second ticket, and going to shows along makes me kind of sad. I also saw that a 20th year anniversary vinyl record went on sale yesterday which I bought.

i didnt even bother trying to get a ticket although i would have really liked to, i just hate how bullshit the ticket buying experience is for anything popular

I got 4 seats in the pavilion two sections back in Michigan since they aren't coming to Chicago and I'm psyched.

Like everyone else, I was pretty bummed when Isaac left Black Country New Road, but goddamn the direction they're going in without him is great too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbHV8oObR54 Yeah it's different but it's still really good. I'm fully on board for wherever they're going.

In other very exciting news, Tiny Ruins has just announced a new album, coming April. She's one of NZ's best and most under-rated songwriters, and the new single is really good. https://tinyruins.bandcamp.com/album/ceremony

They announced the openers for the tour too. I'm getting Warpaint The Beths would have been cool too. Definitely would rather see this as its own show vs. Pitchfork (if they end up playing). vvv Appreciate the offer but I will be at the Cobra Lounge supporting my friend's band tomorrow night angrygodofjebus fucked around with this message at 18:39 on Feb 23, 2023 |

The biggest surprise CHVRCHES ever did was have the dude sing on that one track And I like them a lot just yeah it's pretty similar most of the time, and that's fine!

Martin sings on numerous songs! And when he does it live he's so into it, it rules.

Personally my biggest surprise with Chvrches was with their 3rd album and they attempted to go for a more mainstream / imagine dragons type radio sound. If it weren't for the last album and their song on Death Stranding, I would've written them off by now.

Screen Violence is by far the best thing Chvrches has ever put out. They always had bops but the songwriting and lyricism were just so much more mature. Because of this I believe that Lauren Mayberry should continue living in LA even though it's clearly making her miserable.

Screen Violence kicks rear end and I couldn't stop listening to it after it came out. Also, I don't know if Gorillaz count as indie but I'm listening to the album they put out today and it's doing nothing for me Shame

Yeah Screen Violence is my favorite album from them. Can easily listen start to finish without skips and it got even better when they released the version with the extra tracks.

the latest national song dropped https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEMabLFhD38 this and Tropic Morning News have definitely been some of the lyrically knottiest songs they've put out recently. like more high-tempo versions of Not In Kansas

I think I still might give the edge to their first album, but screen violence is a close second.

I listened to Chvrches' catalog yesterday and it reinforced my position that nothing they have done since The Bones of What You Believe has been as good. Maybe I'm just older and their newer stuff doesn't resonate with me as much anymore, but The Bones of What You Believe also has a menace, rancor, and woundedness I haven't been able to really place in their later work. And it's just banger after banger like nothing I've ever heard — "Gun"? "Lies"? "Recover"? I have no idea how they came up with those and they still impress me. Since then, I feel like their sound has gotten generic and too many cliched lyrics strike my ear. I definitely recognize repeated patterns or phrases in some of my favorite bands, but seems like Chvrches has aged into this pretty quickly (maybe a result of a record deal they were trying to fulfil?). Examples for me: "I will tell you no lies" repeated in "Never Ending Circles" and "Miracle" (their most egregiously generic song) and the monotonous synth riff and chorus in "Bury It." I am a fan of the band as people and don't want to come off as dragging them too hard. I agree that Screen Violence was an improvement, but it's just been disappointing waiting for something that blew me away as much as their debut. Concerning Martin's vocals, "High Enough to Carry You Over" is easily one of the best things they've ever done. It's the sense of surprise I feel when I still listen to that track that I miss.
