I googled "mineral oil lamp". Mineral oil drips down the nylon lines in a trippy fashion and catches the light.

What type of cool looking are you into?

Luxman’s tube gear is gorgeous mid century modern. A DCS Vivaldi stack is an attractive modern design that is laughably overpriced. Sonus Faber speakers have beautiful finishes, and for a long time were considered the go-to speaker to appease spouses. My personal favorite, though, is the Estelon Extreme Mk II. Talk about making a statement.

I love Tom's

Without a review sample, we can’t completely dismiss all of the product listing claims regarding this cable’s Hi-Fi qualities. However, the maker has missed some obvious optimizations, as the design omits any reference to using precious metals or oxygen-free conductors.

If you like this audiophile Superstar Crystal Formula SATA SSD cable, you might also find the audiophile SSD, and the similarly targeted Ethernet Switch UEF appealing. Please be warned that all these products include a substantial audiophile tax.

If you're a reviewer it's pretty much a given you'll slide down the slope, the slope was specifically constructed and greased by audio companies to make this happen.
  • A lot of them haven't heard really good stuff before so they may be blown away by the mere fact of its expense
  • Audiophile companies have big marketing budgets which is how they pay for review samples
  • You're less likely to get more of said review samples if you aren't super enthusiastic
  • You're more likely to get to perks and press junkets if you're enthusiastic
  • All the companies you're reviewing are potential sponsors
I'm not saying all reviewers are bent or whatever but even Amir from ASR started accepting review samples, it just makes your life that much easier. It's just a steep, slippery slope from "well meaning but not careful" to "wow this $6000 power cord made a huge difference in my system"

Yeah, the best way you can criticize a product is to leave things out, or couch things in "well, this isn't for me but it may be for someone else." For example look at Resolve's review of the DCA Stealth. In the subjective impressions of the Stealth in his video, he only talks about the technical performance of the Stealth in his subjective impressions, and in his personal tier list there's a strong couching of "well this didn't work on my head." If you got him off-the-record, he'd probably trash it.

I listened to the Stealth recently and woof, that headphone did not sound good. While the graph has the Stealth as Harman-neutral, it did not sound that way at all. It's very ironic that the two biggest boosters of the Stealth are Amir of ASR and Herb Reichert. The thing they have in common is serious hearing loss.

And ZMF may be the best example of this phenomenon at small scale. There's a cult around ZMF on Head-Fi and SBAF. The ZMF guy is very generous with the press and on forums, the headphones are well-constructed, and he fits a type that audiophiles love: the sound genius whose gear springs from a singular vision.

The sound quality simply wasn't there on the Atrium I listened to. The first note in my notebook when I listened to them was that they were lacking energy. What I heard was confirmed with the measurement. There's nothing past 7K!

The only impression I could find that made note of this was a review that said "treble response is where the Atriums will likely be most divisive."

You know, I always wondered what Amir did it when he said he plays the speakers at like 95dB+ for his subjective listening reviews. If he has a giant room and sat far away, or used earplugs, or something else.

I guess I have my answer now :v:

I also ran my volume high doing reviews and that means that I had far different impressions from most other reviewers. 90-95db at least. I pushed to 100 if I could as well. Before you ask, I have a SPL meter and just volume match with one IEM in one ear and speakers playing.

Godzilla07

There's a difference between listening at high volumes to expose distortion and other flaws in the driver, e.g. Focal Clear, and Amir:

quote:

I sense nothing is too loud when I go to the dentist. So I don't think your issues are occupationally related. I do have age related hearing loss ("nerve damage"). This has lowered my sensitivity in higher frequencies. But in mid frequencies, the audiologist showed I hear above average.

About 10 years ago, I was working in the yard and got so annoyed at a neighbor constantly running his generator. I wanted to find out which neighbor it was so I walked all over the neighborhood but no matter which direction I went, I could not identify the source. The sound would not get any louder in any direction. Then it occured to me it might be me. So I got in my car and closed the doors and the level of noise did not change. That is when i realized it was tinnitus. Fortunately I adapted to it and learned to ignore it except on some occasions which don't bother me a lot.

God bless Amir for being so dedicated to measurements that he bought a Klippel NFS, but I do not trust that man for any sort of subjective impression on transducers.

To be honest, with Dankpods you never know when he is actually taking the piss or loving something. It's part of the charm and character he made. Although he doesn't gently caress around and will pump stupid expensive headphones with huge preamps to see if they will burn or live up to their specs.

I'm a Sony MDR-V6 nerd and yell at the TV when I see people wearing them backwards. But I respect his choice of HerrDerr600s as his control as they are also very good headphones.

I run high volume because I want my in ears to respond like speakers in a room, which generally the louder the are the better they sound.

DankPods should be viewed as entertainment-only. Please do not trust the drummer who loves the stuff he uses as a musician, or the free stuff he gets from brands, like the $3,000 USD Empyrean that Meze comped him. I wish he were better because DankPods has a massive platform, particularly for people getting into the hobby

FWIW the only people who have really trashed HD600s are Head-Fi posters whose brains have been broken by Grados yelling about "Sennheiser veil"

I've got a Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge now and man. For $170-$200 it's a great piece of gear. Clear, balanced, and the reduction in surface noise compared to the Grado black was huge.
