I'll be damned if I'm going to go to either of the other offerings, I value my sanity thank you very much.

Extremely dumb move to close the gbs one but I'm glad this threads still going strong.

It's possible to find a thread where some dude was obviously excited about the prospect of Russian soldiers resorting to cannibalism distasteful while still hoping Putin and his buddies lose this war and their heads .

There were folks who were doing a lot of great updates in the GBS thread that I hope make it over to here. The diversity of experience and opinion was great, which is why I generally preferred it to posting with fellow vets. I have Ukrainian roots myself but my lived experience is limited to growing up in a Ukrainian immigrant community so I don’t have much to offer myself.

A great year on retrospective by one of our favorite classicists, Bret Devereaux. https://acoup.blog/2023/02/24/collections-one-year-into-the-war-in-ukraine/ Very unfortunate about the GBS thread. It was the best thread on this topic on the forum.

GBS refugee's guide to posting in GiP: 1) Don't bring interforum drama here, you will get paddled. 2) see 1. 3) Kuznetsov is never going to be able to sail on an actual deployment anywhere, she's already ancient, and runs on poo poo that's E: apparently Mazut is equivalent to No. 6 Fuel Oil, so basically the absolute worst poo poo you can burn in a boiler. orange juche fucked around with this message at 06:32 on Feb 25, 2023 |

Last time I saw the Kuznetsov was that video of a jet loving up its landing and pulling away with a hard cobra maneuver. I'm surprised it didn't set the deck on fire.

Oscar Wilde Bunch posted:Didn’t India/China buy/inherit some of her sisters? Did they do extensive modernization to them? China turned her sister, Varyag into a functional carrier, Liaoning, and India bought an absolutely clapped-out Kyiv class aircraft carrier, ex-Baku, now INS Vikramditya (Surprise surprise, the Russian refit of the ship to sell it to India took 3x the initial budget, due to the Russian shipyard blackmailing the Indian officer who was coordinating the sale and refit) Since Varyag never actually was ever under power (construction of Varyag was abandoned at ~89% by the Soviet military, and then she was purchased by China from Ukraine), the Chinese technically didn't have to worry about lovely Soviet maintenance wrecking the engines, and were able to rework everything onboard the ship. China had a very intense interest in getting a working aircraft carrier, and based on Liaoning actually having deployed successfully a couple times now, they did quite a good job finishing it out and fixing the lovely workmanship of the Soviet builders. orange juche fucked around with this message at 07:05 on Feb 25, 2023 |
