I'm fine with it. It'd be dumb as hell but I love big dumb trades and I don't give a poo poo about Miller being signed forever because the Pens are gonna be bad for a long time shortly anyways.

Bring on the mongo trades, Hextall. Just don't trade the 2025 or later firsts because we may be in lottery territory by then. Any asset before that should be on the table though

I especially appreciate that Miller would be tied up for the post-Crosby and Co. era. Moving from the couch fire that is the Canucks lately to a geriatric ward that is the Penguins top line just warms the heart.

when is the last time crosby or malkin played the wing?

iirc from ranger days, miller plays all 3 forward positions, but i feel like his breakout the past few years in VAN has come at Center.

He can play all three forward positions but he's by far the best as a LW. Not that it really matters in the modern era as he will take faceoffs regardless of where he lines up. He's a bit of a mess in the middle of the ice though.

I'm completely enamored right now with the thought that Sullivan would plug Miller in next to Jeff Carter.

Miller would be screaming at Carter on the bench within two shifts.

Apparently Kane's equipment is already on it's way to New York. I imagine so is he and they will try to have him in the lineup against Philly

They can't officially submit the trade until after 5PM today. Then it counts as tomorrow so they can accrue enough space to recall Schneider.

This whole thing has been a lesson on how the cap works and it's really stupid (the NHL cap).

drat I'm so used to the mushy middle getting squeezed out of good teams because of huge star contracts (and also in my head Sid and Malkin still make a ton of money though clearly the league has left them behind) that looking at the Pens cap structure is wild. Like to start the year you've got Carter, Kappy, McGinn, and Rutta all making ~$3M apiece to be bottom-roster guys, there's 7 skaters making between $5–6M, it's all so... luxurious

The nice thing about the Pens is they have one of the best top sixes in the league, and all of those contracts are good (at least for now).

The bottom six is killing them. If Hextall had hit on even a few of those bottom six players they'd be in a much better place right now, because the top six is still good enough to make them at least somewhat of a threat.

Some really fun stories in there like JFJ gets casually tossed under a bus.

quote:

Futa: The general manager can only be in one place at the same time. In some cases, Dean (Lombardi) would say, “You call John Ferguson Jr. (in Boston).” Dean gave me the assets that he was willing to part with and he was like, “Under any circumstances, if we can get Milan Lucic, negotiate the deal and call me.” I knew exactly the parameters of what I was allowed to give up and then I called John Ferguson Jr. and we sat and banged it all around and then I came back and said, “Dean, they’re willing to do it for this.” He told me I was full of it — there’s no way they’d do it for that and then I said, “You can make the phone call.” And he goes, “Holy smokes, the deal’s done.”

He has two other LD ahead of him on the Ducks prospect list, could have been some of that potentially although they just drafted Mintyukov.

I mean if the condition is lame poo poo like "the NYR make the playoffs" then it kinda sucks to blow both first round picks in this supposedly really good draft even if they're later picks!

if it's "win a cup" or even "make the SCF" then I'm OK with it

My brain understands that Tanner Jeannot and Patrick Kane are at two very different points in their careers and that one of them costs significantly less in money than the other, but it feels insane to me thinking that all Patrick Kane is getting for Chicago as trade assets go is a 2nd and a 4th while Tanner Jeannot gets a first, a second, a third, a fourth, and a fifth.
