Ok, so I remember some sort of controversy about Quiet back when this game came out but I avoided reading anything about the game at all. I do that for games that I can't, at the time, play whatsoever. It helps avoid fomo, since I'll just want to play it more.

So I gotta ask, what are you referring to? I don't care about spoilers.
I don't know if this is the one they're referring to, but if you spend a bunch of time getting really stinky/dirty in trash and smoking you get... uh, this.

Hey, she breathes and drinks through her skin, so she can't wear a lot of clothes and stuff for .... reasons

quote:

Quiet wore a minimal amount of clothing at all times because she could only drink or breathe through her skin following parasite-treatment due to the serious injuries she had sustained while trying to kill Big Boss during the hospital raid; wearing too much clothing would lead to suffocation.

Not strictly Deck related, but an amusing anecdote:

I often have Amazon packages delivered to Whole Foods. I was shopping there the other day when I checked to see if I had any unclaimed packages (Amazon doesn't do a great job of surfacing items available for pickup if they're old olders) and they handed me four Switch games that (i) I had totally forgotten I preordered, and (ii) three of which I already have on my Deck (and the fourth is on a week-long Steam sale). So now I have to return all of them. For the curious they were:
  • Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
  • Tales of Symphonia Remastered
  • Octopath Traveler II
  • Kao the Kangaroo
Now, the Switch was my primary gaming platform before I got a Deck. For a few reasons, I mostly buy Switch games physically where I can--the main reason was that, for a few years, Amazon had a 20% prime discount on preorders. Even when they stopped doing that I was used to preordering titles when they were announced as occasionally I'd still get a discount due to Amazon's preorder price guarantee, or even just as a backup in case it was a popular title that was sold out or unavailable in store (back when Walmart had $49.94 in store pricing).

When Valve announced the Deck it changed my habits a bit. I figured if this thing ends up anywhere close to what they promise I might finally convert to digital and make purchases Steam first. When I received my Deck last July my expectations were blown away, not only by its generally quite-good compatibility with Steam titles but everything else it does too. I also didn't realize that, while Steam games see frequent sales, that the official key retailers (GMG, etc.) will often have 10-15% or more discounts even on release day for new titles. Somehow I ended up getting GMG XP without really trying so that's 20-22% now (this may have had to do with receiving my Deck in the middle of GMG's summer sale and making a fair bit of purchases at that time). Needless to say my purchase habits have changed dramatically and I stopped preordering Switch games on Amazon. Over time though I forgot about the ones still in the pipe though.

Octopath is especially amusing here. I'm sure the game plays great on the Switch, but I bought it for the Deck due to the aforementioned 22% discount, but also because it (can) run at 60 FPS and I'm tired of Switch games that are locked to 30 (and often struggle with that). First thing I did when I booted it though was notice it draws like 15W at 60 FPS, and it's the kind of game where it really doesn't need to run at that frame rate, so I turned it down to 30 to save considerable battery. I guess I like options?

I love how much you can tweak just with the default tools. FPS limiting and TDW/GPU power is a really nice add to something that can also play AAA titles. So, you can have your cake and eat it too. Cryotools also shows that there are is a lot of room for tweaking in the Linux space to improve performance.

Yeah, battery life isn't astounding. However, just like the Switch (which I haven't played since December), the fact that I can do high-quality gaming on the go more than makes up for the battery life being an issue.

Official dock. I guess I’m just curious about upscaling? Are there settings I have to fiddle with, or will it take care of that for me?

It's the Dreck, of course there are lots of scaling settings. But you're fine just putting it on FSR and not worrying about it

I got a cheapo third-party one (the official dock is overpriced IMO) and it just works, mostly. Occasionally I'll have to unplug/replug deck from dock when I launch a game for some reason, but I dunno if that also applies to the official one. The most complicated part was making sure my BT controller and headphones worked properly.

For high-res displays, it will upscale the SteamUI. I don't think it will upscale the game rendering unless you go in and change the game's settings. Oddly, though, I've found that it doesn't respect the game profile settings (for refresh rate, etc) when I have an external display hooked up. Not sure if that's a bug or by design.

The one thing that comes to mind is that tvs tend to dislike 40Hz, so if that's what your deck is permaset at (mine is), make sure you switch back to 60Hz or the tv will refuse the resolution whenever you launch a game, and you'll end up wasting far too much time trying to use all the resolution options. And obviously, switch back to 40Hz once you're unplugged as it does wonder for the battery.

It will almost certainly work well.

If it doesn't have power passthrough your "docked" sessions will be limited by battery life.

I got about 80 hours of GOAT-tier gameplay out of MGSV. I thought the game part of it was incredible.

My experience with it as a total package is soured by 30-60 minutes of story bits and pieces at the very end of the game, plus that Quiet cutscene somewhere in the middle - which I consider one of the worst things this medium has ever produced and should lead to every copy of MGSV auto deleting itself out of embarrassment.

But to play it? I think it's by far the most fun and engaging open world sandbox that's ever been made. It's fun as hell to just toy around in that space.

The model swap of Ocelot doing Quiet's water splash scene singlehandedly makes it false that it's the worst thing the medium has ever produced, as beautiful art was made from it's parts.

I think I'll be going through it for a very, very long time, treating it like the stealth-based sandbox it so proudly seems to be. So, my first time through (GZ, at least), I'm just trying my best to accomplish the objective, that's it.

Later on, I'll get fancy/SUPER dumb.

All of these problems introduced just provided new tools and toys and opportunities to do things about and with, that wouldn't work on the older games designs with predetermined routes with some room for breaking or experimenting.

Trying to approach a new place, you could sprint in to about where you know you're out of range and then start scoping out a path to sneak in. You could roll in with your mini mech to do the same, or have vehicles airdropped in, or hijack one and roll into the base in plain sight. You could also have yourself shipped in a box into the middle of a base from somewhere else on the map. Could also ride your horse but kind of lean away and surprisingly get by more than you think.

Keeping track of enemies is also a big space for gameplay, I bounced a lot between using Quiet as a spotter and d-dog for more interior spaces or close up missions. Quiet was also OP and could single handedly tranq entire bases, with the downside being hearing the same short snippet of a song being hummed repeatedly but never finishing or progressing.

You also just get so many more ways to sneak, distract, and eliminate enemies for every situation it's pretty wild.

One of my favourite missions to complete stealthily involves fultoning a whole tank battalion and escort, having to learn the routes to plant mines or blow up dolls to stall and distract armoured vehicles so you can stick a little balloon on them all without being seen... Probably one of the harder missions to do with best rank but soo satisfying when you finally bag em all.
