Mild spoilers The idea of VR becoming ubiquitious, the idea of some religious fanatic who writes a new Bible being popular (at some point the book said the guy had like 1/3rd of Americans following him, I think) AND popular on VR, the idea that Republicans would elect a Black woman running on climate. I didn't buy it at all.

Do you suppose there's any way we can trick all the billionaires to seal themselves up in their bunkers and never come out? Like take turns driving Mad Max cars around outside their perimeter fences shooting into the air, while at the same time we're actually finally working on trying to salvage what's left of the habitability of our planet?

Tombs for the ultra-rich have always been elaborate.

I'm wondering what those facilities are going to smell like in two years after they've discovered some key spare parts missing in their maintenance plans. Always fun to have someone drop the one thing overboard that forces you to head for home because no one thought to bring a spare.

I can buy the first two but not the last. Jesus is going to save the Republicans, no need to worry about climate change. I'm sure as the landlord he's not going to be pissed at all about what we've done to the place.

I will never grow tired of the story of the consultant who was brought in to help the billionaires with their end of the world plans and they scoffed when he suggested "uh maybe be nice to them and make them feel like part of your community."

Opting instead for "maybe shock collars or a combination lock on food stores?" which just seems like buying all in on "getting tortured by your guards" futures.

I'm glad this poo poo keeps them up at night.

E: Honestly pro gamer move to the PMC guys who have secured a handsome annual retainer for a contract they may never have to exercise and if they do will give them immediate ownership of a well-appointed doomsday fortress once they murk the rich rear end in a top hat "employing" them.

i liked the deluge; i thought the best part was the second-person narrative that really seemed to be channeling vyelkin's post (in the op). the book makes no bones about it being already too late for humanity, and yet essentially ends on the same (positive, transcendental) note as KSR's Aurora, but i guess it was either that or devolving into another 900+ pages of torture porn. /-:
i wasn't sure what the books position on eco-terrorism was meant to be? at first, they show the orchestrated bloodless destruction of several o&g processing plants as leading to outrage on the right and stymying what would've been a landmark climate bill, then they show (at a later date) that the orchestrated murder of several senators is instrumental in passing very similar legislation? mixed messages...

edit: its really not that different from the ministry for the future; hits the same notes and definitely comes from the same ideological angle. its more balanced, i suppose, splitting the narrative fairly evenly between cassandras, eco-terrorists, political activists, policy wonks, industry shills, and average joes. if you like ministry, this is a slightly more exhaustive/ realistic/ nuanced take on the same. if you didn't like ministry's plot, i doubt you'd like this book.

edit2: alternately, it's yet another thought experiment that tries to square the worldview of Solnit's Hope in the Dark with the material reality of climate change

I don't understand the confusion. The book's position on ecoterrorism is: targeted violence works. The planet isn't dying, it's being murdered, and the people killing it have names and addresses.

Early on in the book the ecoterrorists call ahead before doing the bombings. at least early on I feel like it is sympathetic to the terrorists and shows how hard a democratic president would come down on them. I'm 20% of the way through. maybe it changes.
