The setting was that good and the gameplay was that bad. It turned into an absurd arms race towards the end. Tanks with x-ray lasers? Sure, why not. Blimps dropping FAE bombs with laser guidance? Yup. ADQ usually had some good short stories. Two of the three Car Wars novels were outstanding (one by Aaron Allston, the other by David Drake), the third one is best left alone.

Defiance Industries posted:The core business model is that of an RPG, not a wargame. If people only cared about the rules of the game, FASA would have gone belly up by '86. The business model is based around splatbooks (TROs) and worldbooks (plot sourcebooks) rather than the GW model of monetizing the rules of the game and requiring you to buy shitloads of minis. The core game is more like a boardgame, a single one-and-done purchase. I do not agree with this definition of RPG or wargame at all. By this description Flames of War is an RPG and Star Wars Imperial Assault is a wargame and you'd get funny looks trying to argue that sincerely to anyone who has played either. EDIT: to be clear I'm not suggesting that interacting with BattleTech as RPG is somehow wrong, if that's how you like playing then go for it, but reducing the definition of an entire genre of games to its method of monetization is dumb.

Does flames of war have a long history of expecting its players to roleplay around design problems? Because "oops well we're gonna put in a story about how you should do X" has been a core part of BT since "life is cheap, mechs aren't" tried to tell people to run away rather than fight on with two mechs that are just a torso. All of Clan culture stems out of them not having any kind of balancing mechanic at the time it was introduced so they invented a bunch of story stuff about dueling and bidding.

We did the first scenario in the back where we each had the same roster and just had to beat the poo poo out of each other until someone was out of mechs. Starting around 2pm we packed up a little after 5 with only one mech from each side down. It did start to go faster towards the end as we got better at GATOR but I think we were playing too conservative with heat generation and not just firing enough guns Introductory tech on pen-and-paper is definitely a full day experience rather than a half day one. I recently ran a 1v1v1 standoff for two newbies between the og Griffin, Wolverine, and Shadow Hawk and it took 24 turns in 4+ hours. Same players felt a lot better in a second match I helped run that was 2v2 where fire could be focused, everyone had Inner Sphere XL Engines, and weapons were generally more effective with 3067ish tech. A lot more gets accomplished that way it's been mentioned a bit in other replies since you posted but for the machine guns you can definitely agree with your other players to bring ammo bins that are only loaded to half or not loaded at all. There's also a rule for completely dumping ammo bins in the middle of combat if you want (example: the MG gets destroyed but your ammo is still there), but it makes your 'Mech very vulnerable in the rear for a turn.

I have a lot of nostalgia for the art in TRO 3058. Even if a lot of mechs look squatter than later depictions.

I like the look that Star League machines used to have. They had that 1960s jet style to them that told you these were from a whole different time than modern stuff. A lot of the redesigns went too boxy for me.

A lot of the redesigns went too boxy for me. Yeah I really like how "alien" the Star League and TRO 3055 early Clan mechs looked compared to the IS stuff. They actually looked like two different branches of design evolution. The Clans maintained their technology level and kept building stuff to similar standards while the ravages of the Succession Wars resulted in things being built in cruder ways.

Also the designs that survived into the Succession Wars were almost all Age of War and Reunification War designs so they are generally centuries older than the SLDF stuff.

So I've fallen in with some madlads running the Tukkayid Chaos Campaign, and I'm in charge of vehicle support against Smoke Jaguar. What are my dirty tricks in 3052? I've picked up AC/2 carriers for aerospace and annoyance, LRM Carriers for minefields and NARC follow-ups. A brace of Alicorn VIs, Arrow IVs and some Sprints, a unit of Peregrines, a bushel of Savannah Masters and some Karnovs with SRM teams. Are there any nasties I'm missing before I go all-in on Rievers for the rest?

I like that set but I'm also disappointed it doesn't have the Bane in it, which I think is the first full-Clan mech that wasn't a rebuild of an existing chassis (which merely adopted the Clans, but the Bane was born in them)

As far as I've found, the oldest design that was entirely homegrown by them is the Fox (2823). Curiously, as they introduced Clantech, they seem to do so mostly through refitting existing designs for a while, stuff like the Drift Shag or lynx C. They didn't really seem to want to build entirely new designs with it right away. Defiance Industries fucked around with this message at 10:26 on Mar 3, 2023 |

The owner of my LGS is trying to setup a learn to play battletech weekend to try and get more playing than just us. We're kicking around the best way to do it right now because the beginner box isn't really indicative of the full game but AGoAC is way too involved to do a demo game of Is there a good in the middle compromise?

Alpha Strike games are both fast and good at teaching new players movement and turn order basics. Once everyone's got the basics of movement and turn order down "graduating" to Total Warfare is easy.
