That's fine. Only way that it would mess things up is if there are strong winds from due N/S due to the fact that ATL has only 9/180 runways. And since it's at your connecting airport, it's unlikely that it would impact only your inbound.

https://www.delta.com/us/en/advisories/current-advisories - if it ain't on here, Delta doesn't think that there's much chance of issues.

i am supposed to be connecting through Atlanta tomorrow evening, but they have a wind advisory in the afternoon - winds 20-25mph, possible gusts up to 45mph, diminishing in the evening.

what wind speeds impact flight operations, should i expect issues in the evening for my connection?

The crosswind component is going to be more of a factor than the actual wind speed. ATL only has east/west runways so I could see that becoming an issue since the forecast shows winds from the south. I don't fly into ATL nearly enough to give you an answer on how they handle strong crosswinds but the planes will have a limitation on what they can operate with. That being said, forecasts change all the time so I personally wouldn't worry about any of this until tomorrow. If you're a nervous flyer, you could call delta and see if they can get you on a flight that doesn't involve ATL.

afternoon winds are shown as north to south from the NWS, but i'll keep an eye on that page. thanks!

Edit: also thanks, no issues with a bumpy ride, i'd rather just get home than be stuck in Atlanta or whatever. trying to anticipate travel delays for planning really.

appreciate the input.

Other option is one of the KAL flights from JFK is on a 748. I think those are the two logical options for a single connection.

You will definitely want to check seasonal schedules, though.

Or, if you are a masochist REALLY like flying, go the other direction! Lufthansa still flies several based out of Frankfurt to NA (I know Toronto/Vancouver for sure, not sure about US but they must?). Then do Frankfurt to Beijing, then whatever from Beijing to Korea. :getin:

Might be interesting pulling that itinerary for a fare though.

They were flying the 747 Frankfurt to Orlando for a while but it's stopped now. Not sure if that was seasonal. It might be.

I flew JFK - ICN in a 747 a few years back. Pro tip: sit on the right side of the plane for maximum northern lights seeing chances.

I've done JFK to Taipei a few times over the past decade which follows a similar route and I've never considered that we could see the Aurora Borealis. Granted it's a red-eye flight that leave at around 1 in the loving morning so we're usually zonked out by that point. We're planning on going back this autumn so I'll keep that in mind.

If you're looking to do norther lights spotting I think the preferred plane for that would be a 787 due to the larger windows? Good tip on the right side

We usually fly EVA which looks like they use 777-300ERs for those direct flights. I don't really remember using the windows all that much because it was perpetually night for much of the flight.

The METAR in the Vasa video said 10sm visibility. I'm disappointed he didn't include the "possible pilot deviation" bit.

I had a windshear on short final forcing a rejected landing a couple months back and looking at adsb after the fact it was really unpredictable to the point of like, 5 planes land fine, 2-3 have to execute a go-around, then 5 land just fine, 1 does a go-around, 2 land ... because local conditions were changing all the time.

what I'm getting at is you're probably fine, and also there's more or less no way to know whether it'll be relevant to your flight until you're on short final. at that point it's a bit late to redo your travel planning.

that said I think it's worth the time to plan on not being stuck in atlanta, as I'd rather not be stuck there either.

Is Lufthansa just sitting on a mountain of spare 747 parts or what. Only two carriers who have any substantial fleets left, everyone else started culling their fleets 15+ years ago

Buying 8 more passenger models is like, committing to 30 more years of operation? I guess they'll go into freight service in 5-10 years? Bought as passenger models for tax reasons?

There were 449 Boeing 747 aircraft in active airline service as of February 2023, comprising 4 747-100s, 19 747-200s, 4 747-300s, 268 747-400s, and 154 747-8s.

I assume that Boeing has committed a certain number of years of parts availability for their customers.

Spare parts for old planes is still a very lucrative business. The manufacturing line I sit above is still making classic hornet control surface spaces and when that plane's line ended over 20 years ago.

The Boeing 737-200QC is the undisputed workhorse of the skies.
There are still 737-200’s in mainline rough field services in Canada to this day. The last 200 rolled off the lines in 1988.

Planes last a surprisingly long time.
