And when reading contemporary reports, the users and commanders seem to place very little actual stock on the type of tank, in direct opposition to today's stat wanking. For example "Sherman" will cover 75mm and 76mm variants, without separating them. "Accompanied by TDs" is in the report, and only by finding a picture do we figure out it's a hellcat, two M36s, one M10. Those are wildly different from each other in War Thunder at least, but in the commander's eyes he just needed "a TD". Not to say that the US didn't for example prioritize shipping 76mm Shermans when the shipping capacity was tapped out, or that they didn't understand it penetrates more. But that the average commander would have much idea or care about gun caliber or length or the type of tank destroyer he'd have seems to be pretty ret-conny.

I don't think feeding elite units into this fight is worth it. Better to use them in counter attacks elsewhere if they want to relieve pressure on Bakhmut https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent/status/1631948412772835330

I'm increasingly concerned about Bakhmut. I don't see the benefit in going to such lengths to hold it, seems like too great a risk. Obviously we don't know what the Ukrainians know, and they've clearly made some great tactical decisions so far, but given all that Russia gets out of it is a minor propaganda victory I don't see that it's worth throwing that many lives away for. There are apparently 5k civilians still there, though (why? It looks like hell on earth).

Same thing was said about Severodonetsk, and I'm still not sure whether they stayed there for too long or not. Seems to have attrited the Russians to the point where they could take back Kharkiv oblast without resorting to battles of attrition, so on the balance it probably saved lives. I guess they're trying to repeat that.

Ukraine is clearly tenaciously defending the city, but how do we know they aren't in the process of pulling men and materiel out? We figured out that Russia managed to pull out of Kherson very effectively only after the fact, no?

I'd be curious as to the number who are stubborn and want to stay in their hometown, versus those who want to get out but would prefer to throw in with the Russians. War Translated posted a video from a Ukrainian team in Bakhmut where the narrator recounts seeing locals with packed bags move to a Russian position and get evacuated through the Russian lines, though they had plenty of time to leave earlier when Ukraine controlled the area. 6:58 on the linked video. For the time before that timestamp, some extremely close-in street fighting. Nobody on camera gets hit, but Ukrainian and Russian soldiers are engaging from houses literally next door to each other. https://twitter.com/wartranslated/status/1631757166217424900
