I always thought it was weird how people treated JRPGs as weird and juvenile when WRPGs weren't exactly high art either. Like, come on, Mass Effect 2 had the camera hover over your crewmate's rear end while she was talking about her past trauma. Baldur's Gate I and II are basically akin to the better Marvel films in terms of writing quality, but people seem to blank out all the goofy hamster stuff Minsc does in favor of only remembering the Irenicus bits. Planescape Torment is considered the most mature of them all with its good writing, but also every portrait of a woman in that game that isn't Fall-From-Grace or Ravel Puzzlewell has the women wearing insanely revealing clothing, including Deionarra (a person that your past incarnation emotionally manipulated and then left for dead) having her dress torn so you can see her tits. Fallout 2 sinks to some really stupid and childish depths with New Reno, and the game loves referencing poo poo almost as much as Ready Player One. I love both genres, so it always really baffles me when I see people being smug about either being superior to the other.

For the player this created an interesting dynamic of needing to kill goombas and koopas to afford to be able to dress then up, making some players take pacifist routes only breaking bricks and yanking poles.
