My parents are doctors in Turkey (which actually has excellent healthcare) and when they visited Cuba five years ago and toured some of their "state of the art" medical facilities, what they saw left them aghast. They basically said that Cuban healthcare is about thirty to forty years behind the rest of the world, and having well-trained doctors (most of whom actually receive their training outside Cuba) is their only saving grace.

I've got mixed feelings about a TikTok ban. On the one hand it's the most effective psi-op China has ever launched against capitalism. On the other hand the format sucks so much that getting rid of it would be a net good for the world.

It means institutional money is rapidly vacating short-term financial instruments (typically bonds, here it's the interest rate on the dollar) because they anticipate disaster in the near term. Interest rates and yields go up when people sell, they go down when people buy.

This is why people talk about the "inverted yield curve" so much -- it's when near-term bonds (6 month, 1 year, 2 year) provide a better yield than long-term (5 year, 10 year). This is because financial institutions view these as the risk not outweighing the reward.
