at the very least they're being remarkably open about their true intent

almost every geopolitical crisis of today centers around containing China. I'd just have thought they'd want to keep up at least some political facade for the sake of diplomacy.

I don't get why China isn't just openly sending weapons to Russia at this point. Cats out the bag.

russia doesn't need more weapons, they have a perfectly functional arms industry and are limited in the current conflict by their unwillingness/inability to devote more than a minimum of manpower not by munitions

russia needs trading partners and alternatives to western services and that is what china is openly providing

limited in the relative sense that they have the capability to produce, maintain and fuel more materiel than required to support the manpower they're putting in the field so increasing weapon imports would only have a marginal effect

every additional so many tons of shells per month requires so many more tubes to fire and so require so much more manpower to man the guns, drive the trucks and trains to move the extra shells, more officers and specialists, etc

The question is really when the mobilized come into action and all the Russian supply chains have to gear in at once.

As far as China goes, everyone knows what is happening but I think China is just avoiding giving the West pretext as much as possible as they know time favors them. If the Russians actually got into trouble, the Chinese would bail them out.

It’s been a really incoherent shift to the Pacific and they haven’t quite strung together a narrative that sells the public on containment. Taiwan? Nobody cares and everyone agrees it’s part of China. Myanmar? Uighurs? Both depend on the US eliciting public sympathy for Muslim minorities after twenty years of stirring up antipathy for the GWOT.

Even Vietnam, the planned hinged on the US public caring so much about Vietnam as a historical friend and ally that they agree they must come to their rescue on China’s doorstep.

All very funny.

The West really can't understand that two countries with a similar political sysytem and deep trade ties might be closer than the country that waged a genocidal war of colonial domination in loving memory thats on the other side of the world. China helps Vietnam build high speed rail infrastructure, what does the US do for Vietnam, remind them who built Cam Ranh Bay?

I think that volunteer militaries - which were supposed to cushion the MIC from public approval, and did for expeditionary wars - are a double edged sword for a conflagration with China or whatever they want. The economic draft could cover the GWOT, it couldn’t cover a world war, and so they do increasingly need people to believe in and join up for… however they are selling this poo poo.

It’s a problem of their own creation because the manpower requirements for China and Russia require mass participation.

And because China is a functional.country I'd be willing to bet its population has a better buy in in case of war. While the US and the West run governments whos onlynguiding principle is managing just how miserable they can make the avergae citizens life. So they may say they love America, and the troops but the social contracts been shredded. In a society where you look our for just you why would you do something stupid like risk dying for an abstract polity that does nothing for you.

Though this is all conjecture, a War between the US and another nuclear power will be over before the first draft notices cpuld even be drawn upz cause we'll turn the worlds cities to ash first

the unspoken contract between the US empire and its population is that the empire can go bomb whoever so long as there isn't any rationing or visible impact on the domestic economy, thats what I was getting at with my snark around public opinion above. I don't think the US would be able to break that unspoken contract for full economic and social mobilisation.
