The Americans is hilarious for the aforementioned wigs and also stuff like the middle school-aged daughter reading Capital but it's like the width of a children's book and that Marx says religion is a "drug that keeps people in chains" lol. As far as late-stage empire propaganda against a vanquished foe it's pretty entertaining but also very silly. The family drama aspects aren't bad

The most charitable I remember it being to the USSR was around the war - that they did the vast majority of fighting and dying against the Nazis and had to rebuild with the ravages of war all around them while the American homefront was unscathed - both of which are correct and counter to American propaganda that we won it all and the USSR would have been helpless without lend-lease. I haven't seen the show since it aired but yeah you do get some good dramatizations around Able Archer 83, ARPANET development, etc. But given that the snowrunner was CIA, eh

I mean they're still involved in the whole spy business but they genuinely seem to care about the safety of the people who work for them and aren't as bloodthirsty as some of the other people on either side. Maybe the pastor too, but he's mostly been in the background so far. I got some creep vibes from him early on but I think that might have been an intentional misdirect. It's a cool show they shot some contras and a white apartheid guy got burned to death

I think I said this before but I had heard goons raving about this “Barry” show being so great, so one day i looked for it on Netflix and put it on expecting to get blown away and it was a Barack Obama documentary. I was kinda confused but goons had been saying it was good so I watched the whole thing

Maybe it's lib, whatever, but I think the point of the work the characters do for their respective nations is to show how it dehumanizes and breaks people down. I don't think that's an unfair or inaccurate thing to say about intelligence officers, even if Keri Russel's character is working for an objectively just cause that she wholeheartedly believes in. It's a great show imo, and like I said, I'm not looking for perfect politics out of American media because I'm not going to get it (in all likelihood). I like the episode of The Americans where Keri Russel's character freaks out when she realizes they're raising perfect little capitalists and starts desperately bargaining with her husband like "well maybe we can turn them into socialists" and his response is something like "have you met our children, get real"
