It's funny because I'm giving a lecture on this today, but people now always ask about why it was considered a milestone for minority populations to be granted military service. Why "fight to fight" for a racist, colonist, imperialist and unjust etc. etc. society that denied you your civil rights ? Why did Native Canadians, Japanese Canadians, Black Canadians demand they be enlisted in the World Wars and participate at such a high rate? Why too has the state been weary of memorializing their participation until the 1990's?
Reminds me about that guy from Ken Burns documentary that went to go kill people in Vietnam because his family got put into a concentration camp for being Japanese.

Still haven't worked through all the layers of how messed up that is.

Edit:

So rather than, you know, being rubes who fought for racist governments, which seems to be the prevailing view from a contemporary standpoint, they were conscious political actors who saw military service as an effective tool to enter the body politic -and universally, they were correct.
And that part was also true for him, since he ended up being a judge, so high social standing. Still doesn't change how hosed up that is imo.

The only good and decent reason to join the US military is to fly cool fighter planes at top speed and pull off awesome tricks at mach 666.

My commie brain melts down when I see a jet fighter. I want to walk up and give it a giant, slobbery kiss and ask it to take me away from here.

yeah i once went to an american airshow with every military plane in it and it loving rocked i cant lie it was super awesome.

an f-22 and f-35 actually flew over my head, it was genuinely frightening not just because how loud and fast those things are but i was half expecting the f-35 to crash into me at any moment.

the best planes by far are the A-10 warthogs, by far americas coolest planes ever after the p-51 mustangs.

it was really incredible how almost immediately my anti-war socialist scrooge mood was lifted by how cool those death machines were and how glad i wasnt their targets.

can you imagine being a group of random pro-ukraine dipshits, and suddenly the US starts giving you some funding and all that they ask of you is that you "lay low" and "remain available for something later"? you're overjoyed, you use all the cash to party for a few weeks, knowing that there is more where that came from and then one day, as you're barely managing to wake up from yet another night of drinking, you look at the news and the US is saying that you're the one who blew up the nordstream pipeline and your handler is suddenly not answering your phone calls anymore. You're out of money and you hear the police sirens in the distance

We've already reached the "US throwing its allies/minions/tools under the bus" stage, and the war isn't even over. They're preparing the public for bailing on Ukraine and/or forcing them into negotionations.

Ukrainian/US propaganda is a loving hoot. Every time they lose or are on the verge of losing an important battle in in the war, these cope narratives pop up. For Mariupol, it was "for every brave Ukrainian death, the Rashist Orcs lost 10, a pyrrhic victory for Russia." Same with Severodonetsk and Lysychansk. Its all designed to keep morale high enough in order to shovel an entire generation of Ukrainians into the meat grinder without a mass revolt in the Ukrainian military/society along with keeping up foreign support for the war. Reality is completely nonexistent in wartime propaganda.

I’m surprised they’re saying anything at all because American media doesn’t care about this story anymore. I don’t read German media though, maybe it’s different there

still shocked that a us ally or the us itself committed an act of war against Germany with 0 public repercussions. can you imagine if this was some Muslim country that did it?

Its intelligence reviewed by the US which means someone else generated it and thats just the US explanation for what happened base on that intel.

They cant even say russia did it in response and had to throw ukraine under the bus

Now I remember that lady a few weeks ago saying its up to europeans to decide if they want russia to participate on the investigation of what happened and that the us 100% didnt do it. Its absolutely related to that

The CPI, wedded as it was to the stalinist line couldn't either infiltrate congress cadre or link up with rural support until after independence. I don't think nationalizing industries wholesale, starting five year plans based on the model of the USSR, transforming huge swathes of rivers into productive farmland etc was "gandhian" in any sense of the word. The indian state "failed" because the export markets it was making the steel for just formed their own economic bloc with the ECSC. So the big two Five year plans took until the mid 1970s to deliver economic results.

Evil nehruvian politics was actually reducing the relative wealth disparity between the bourgeoisie and farmers; something the INC- CPM coalition government started returning to after 2004 with redistributive policies.

So what is the logical explaination for what is generally occuring in Bakhmut at this point?

That the AFU is losing its best of its troops and dumping more on because it can't let go in exchange the Russians are losing some mercenaries?

It's being presented as a result of the conflict between political leadership "Zelensky" and military leadership "Zaluzhny". The political angle was to hold it, the military angle was to shepherd resources and fall back when holding it became untenable.

Personally I have no idea what the gently caress is going on anymore. But it looks like the army is giving it up, and we'll see what the consequences are eventually.

I think the U.S. sees the beginnings of resistance within Germany (the people, not the government) and are trying to form a counter-narrative with the help of Scholz (undoubtedly a topic in his meeting with Biden) to get ahead of it. Sure, Sy Hersh's article was largely buried by the media generally in the west, but I would imagine the German people - who got hit by the Nord Stream attack the worst - are starting to sense that something is not right and are getting tired of supporting the Ukraine war. The silence about Nord Stream is too suspicious - they want some sort of concrete answer. I did see that they had some fairly sizeable protests calling for peace, but if there are any Germans here that have a better understanding of the current climate within the country, that could certainly help me figure out if my rambling ideas are hitting the mark or not.

Let's call it a staggered retreat. They're still throwing the raw conscripts at it, but if they had any trained regular forces there then they're getting pulled out.

There's been too many "Ok we're done, we're leaving Bakhmut now" reports and videos from various Ukrainian soldiers for it to be nothing.
