There's actually not that much to discuss. Created in 1969 the show features a young boy Jimmy, and his talking flute, traveling to the magical Living Island which is essentially populated by proto-furries. The nemesis is Witchiepoo, who of course is a witch and wants the magical flute and to rule the land. The theme song in the opening credits is legendary for the line "HR Pufnstuf, you can't do a little, cause you can't do enough". Admitted by one of the producers to be an advocacy for smoking weed. In a children's show. Opening and closing theme songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orUNj09oN4U I watched this as a kid in the late '70s, probably re-runs as there were only about 17 episodes ever produced. I would sing along with the song as I watched. I was digging my truck out of the snow today and found myself humming the song as I worked. There was some weird-rear end stuff on TV back in the day.

Most of the Sid and Marty Kroft stuff was really weird. Pufnstuf, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Land of the Lost, The Bugaloos, Lost Saucer (starring Jim Nabors and Ruth Buzzy). HR Pufnstuf was borderline nightmarish.

in the 70s mcdonalds approached sid and marty krofft and said "hey how about making some freaky-rear end commercials for us, like we have this clown named ronald mcdonald and maybe we could put him in a crazy place called mcdonaldland with some of those loving weird walkaround puppets you guys make, how about a giant big mac as a cop or a cheeseburger mayor" and the kroffts said sure but then mcdonald's said "oops sorry looks like we decided not to make freaky-rear end commercials after all" and the kroffts said ok but mcdonald's made their own freaky-rear end commercials anyway with some of the people who worked for the kroffts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69tacqy-nG8 anyway the kroffts sued and got a million bucks and I hope they spent it all on weed

I was a really sick kid and probably should have seen a doctor, or more likely a hospital, but my mother refused and instead when I became too ill to function her solution was to make me sleep on the living room couch while she did stuff, sometimes checking in on me during the day. To entertain me she would leave the TV on, and I remember being incredibly sick, with an insane temperature, having vivid waking fever dreams as the world swirled around me, feeling like it was pinching and pulling my brain itself. The cacophony loudened by the shrill voices of kids shows like Brum or HR Pufnstuf. The worst was Short Circuit 2, which in itself is a stupid movie but when enhanced with the petrifying intoxication of illness and the seemingly endless repeat of Love Is In The Air o n the radio became my personal hell. So I'm not a fan, is what I'm saying.

HR Pufnstuf was before my time, but not for my two older sisters and I definitely remember watching reruns of the old Sid & Marty Krofft shows in syndication as a young kid around the time Pryor’s Place (a children’s show with Richard Pryor (!) made by the same team) aired when I was 5. There’s a decades long-running gag in my family when no one gives a poo poo about something, we say, “Oranges, smoranges; who cares?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tNWAg3MtoM

I was too young to catch Pufnstuf much, but occasionally did see the sea monsters one. I more clearly remember Wonderbug, which was kind of like a live action Scooby Doo, if the dog was a magical flying dune buggy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILQblBkVcxA The show does not hold up.

I just remember this stuff from when I was a kid. 70'sTV was wild. Some great cartoons on reruns, Land of the Lost had actual sci-fi plots along with the crappy dinosaurs, a post apocalyptic kids show with a talking monkey and a jet pack along with all the weirdness of the Sid and Marty Kroft stuff. I think at age six I had a crush on the girl in the Bugaloos.

Pufnstuf back in the day, but not that much IIRC, prob. due to sibling rivalry, because my brother liked the show. I've long forgiven my brother (substantially), and recently downloaded the complete series & also a video of the stage shows by the creator (from Youtube I think also and the usual other source). Not great video quality, but the price was right, iykwim. Will get onto watching them all before long.

BigBadSteve posted:More details of these other shows please. What do you remember about them? The only one that I watched with any regularity was Land of the Lost. The premise is that three family members, Rick Marshall and his teenage(?) children Will and Holly (youngest), go over a waterfall on a rafting trip and somehow go through a portal to a strange place where dinosaurs still exist. They take up residence in a cave and most episodes involve them exploring, trying to find a way back, or some conflict with other denizens of the Land of the Lost. There is a family of primitive ape-men, there is an advanced alien (portrayed by someone in green tights with reflective patches filmed against a greenscreen) who is also stuck there. There's Enik, who is an intelligent dinosaur-man, and also a bunch of other, stupid dinosaur-men called Sleestak who live in a place the Marshalls call the Lost City. Erik thought that the Sleestak are his primitive ancestors and he has traveled into the past, but it turns out they are in his future and his race devolved into them. Amongst the dinosaurs is a T-rex called Grumpy, an allosaurus called Alice, and a baby bronto/apatosaurus named Dopey. The Land is also studded with weird pyramidal structures called pylons. You can open a door and go inside where there's a square stone table with various colored crystals and by touching the crystals in the right order you can control various things about the Land (eg, one pylon controls the weather, one controls the sun, etc). Because as the family eventually learns, the Land of the Lost is a small pocket dimension. In one episode they climb up a mountain and through a telescope they can see themselves in the distance.
