Imagine going back to the 80s and telling people there would be a game where Mario dual-wields laser blasters; it would be pandemonium. Also, making Rabbid Mario talk like a ridiculous Italian stereotype was an inspired move; more so when you consider Milan was the lead studio.

Nintendo's got a lot of stuff going on, I get the feeling they have a few of the brand protectiveness brainworms but I've a feeling the Mario RPGs getting strangled by demands is mostly keeping Miyamoto busy so he doesn't try to make another Wii Music. That and Ubisoft being a third party partner probably both has more trust not to mess things up if you leave them alone for five minutes (probably) and more leverage on Nintendo to not get so micromanaged.

So Dragon Age: Inquisition has depictions of the characters as tarot cards (and generally keeps this motif throughout the little blurbs). The fun little thing is that the tarot motif actually does line up with the character(s) depicted, and the art direction is loaded with symbolism for fun analysis. There's a list of all the arcana and the characters they represent (obviously spoilers).
