I'd suggest that anyone who hasn't yet read accounts of the American working class 1890-1920 because that's where going. Big fan of Barbara Tuchman's "The Proud Tower" myself. She has a story in there about a widow who killed herself because she couldn't pay the rent after husband died with an in-home job folding matchboxes, which was the only work she could find.
