Also the best prank with those old CRT monitors was to screenshot the desktop, flip it in MS Paint, set the upside down screenshot as the background, hide the icons then rotate the screen display 180 using the physical buttons on the monitor

This is insanely stupid and self-defeating. If you're running Twitter you want to attract as many users as possible, because not only do you get better advertising bucks the more eyeballs you can deliver to the ads, you're also for sure selling your user data to everyone who wants to buy it. At this point everyone knows what Twitter is. You won't reach meaningful new audiences by advertising that you exist. Instead a large driving force for new user signups is seeing Twitter being used in a cool way, and deciding you want to join in. Back when I was at university, we made this lightweight and customizable Twitter visualiser where you could plug in hashtags or account names, and it would display matching tweets in a fun and playful way and also parsed data and trends from the tweets in all kinds of fun ways. It was used on school info screens to display the school's own accounts and hashtags related to school events, it was used during conferences to display real time reactions from attendees made through tweets. How many new people did it get to sign up to Twitter? I don't know, but I bet the number isn't zero! What did it cost to Twitter in bandwith? I don't know, but I bet the number was pretty close to zero! That application won't work after this, because it used Twitter's API and there's no loving way the school is going to pay tens of thousands of euros to access that data. And the same thing will happen to every other project that used Twitter, because nobody is going to pay these rates short of megacorps who are just scraping data and for whom a few hundred thousand is a rounding error, and I bet that doesn't drive up new user signups and that there aren't too many of those corps signing up anyway. Good job, Elon!
