They don't normally penalize for pronunciation, do they? What the gently caress was up with Thunberg?

It's a man's game, but boys will play

Her explanation was that she added an R, pronouncing it "Thurnberg".

The final today seemed...ludicrously difficult?

I'd heard it before but couldn't remember, so all I could think of was Booth, not knowing why but knowing that it was wrong.

I had never heard of the guy. My wife literally literally just finished reading a book on John Wilkes Booth and didn't know the answer, so asking some college students to come up with that seems kinda punishing.

I couldn't remember a name but knew it had to be a doctor of Booth's. I remember an Antiques Roadshow episode that had someone bring in a cane Mudd had carved while incarcerated and I think they mentioned that date.

So many of the clues today seemed to be stuff that was a little too old for the contestants. There was an I Love Lucy clue they didn't attempt that was still culturally relevant for me because of endless ads for tape sets and Nick at Nite. That's something they wouldn't have experienced.

They do, I distinctly remember an episode many years back in the Trebek Era where Dan Castellaneta was the answer, but the guy pronounced it Castellanata. It was initially ruled correct, but two clues later the judges must have been in Alex's ear and he explained that they had to take the money away.

Spelling seems to be played a little looser though, there was a Final once where the answer was "Who is Golda Meir" and someone spelled it "Mier" and got credit for a correct answer. Alex explained that since it technically didn't change the pronunciation of the name, it was accepted. However, in a Teen Tournament where a contestant wrote "Who is Annie Frank?" they were dinged as wrong - different pronunciation, and Alex also said every single piece of information they scoured over, there was never an "I" used in Anne's name. The kid looked so crushed.

For Final, I think you get a lot of leeway with the spelling, so long as it wouldn't add/subtract a syllable from the word. You add that extra syllable, though, and you're hosed.

I only remember it because of the urban legend that the saying ”his name is mud” (also repeated in National Treasure) comes from his name and this event

This was probably only a slight misfire; the kids in high school nowadays (a few years younger than the contestants) seem to only know weird vintage television and music. It's absolutely impossible to calibrate pop culture against teenagers anymore

Also in the era of the internet you’re not limited to what’s being actively broadcast to you. You have your pick of virtually anything created now or in the past. That’s not technically new but in the past decade or so it’s been easier than ever to have that accesss

If you haven't watched today's episode yet, probably a good idea to fast forward to after the categories have all been shown for the Jeopardy round. There's an editing mistake at the beginning and the end-of-game scores are shown at the start of the episode.

It was really weird that the tournament ended on a Thursday, but a small part of me wonders if they wanted this much closer juxtaposition to see if it prompts a reaction. Usually the boomers that love the other one have a weekend to forget how bad she was before Ken comes back on a Monday.

It seems Mayim is best used when games are going to be silly by nature making her a fit for Celebrity Jeopardy or any game show with silliness as the draw. She is a comic actress after all.

The problem is in 99% in Jeopardy cases real money is on the line in with contestants playing to win as just being on the show gives you bragging rights especially if you win. That doesn't mean the game should be devoid of all humor (Hell, Ken gave the greatest wrong answer in the show's history) but it's not the focus of the show.

Given he wrote a book on the subject, I'd hope so. The C-D list of Hollywood don't likely know that or him but know her.

I hope her sitcom becomes the most popular show on television and they do 52 episodes a season for a 1,000 seasons.
