Sergiy Kisilyov retired from the military in 2020, but came back to the Armed Forces of Ukraine as soon as Russia invaded his country in February 2022. He soon took duties of air defense in the Kyiv region and is now credited with taking down 4 Russian helicopters.

Russia has relied heavily on its aviation to prepare the battlefield for the invasion. Russia used helicopters extensively for ground attack duties, especially in the Kyiv region at the beginning of the invasion. However, Ukraine wasn’t entirely unprepared.

Special teams were quickly assembled to counteract some of the threats posed by the Russian invaders. Some of these teams were specialized in taking down Russian military aviation using MANPADS – mobile, shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles. Apparently, some soldiers were better at this job than others.

In an interview with ArmyInform Sergiy Kisilyov explained that he was tasked to defend Kyiv’s airspace using Igla and Stinger missiles. The 9K38 Igla is a very old weapon, used since 1981. It has an infrared homing system, which is still good enough to take down some of the slower targets. Such as helicopters.

Meanwhile, the FIM-92 Stinger is an American system, in service since 1981 as well, and also uses an infrared homing system. These are two different weapons, but soldiers were quick to learn to fire both of them.

And apparently, Youtube videos helped Kisilyov to master his craft. He revealed that Youtube videos were his education about using these weapons systems. And then he honed his skills already on the job.

He said that he managed to shoot down four helicopters in the first month of the invasion.

“I heard the sound of helicopters and after a moment I saw them. They were very far away. At that time, Horenka [village in Bucha district] was under fire. After the second shot, we immediately left our position as it was exposed. The very next day, the deputy commander of the brigade congratulated me for shooting down the helicopter,” the soldier said in the interview.

Soon he downed his second and third helicopters.

Some engagements will stay with Kisilyov for the rest of his life.

“We saw a group of three helicopters. But we couldn’t hit them because they were flying too low. One of them, considering that they were not fired upon, decided to return, and rose as high as if he were in a parade. We fired at him. The Ka-52 helicopter dropped its rotor blades and the pilots ejected,” Kisiliov recalls.

The Ka-52 is one of the rare helicopters that have an emergency ejection system.
