I found this on the net, bunch of small DOS programs that are useful for the home shop. I had an interest in the plug.zip program since you can use a combo of three plug gages to check a hole that's larger than any of your existing gages and this program calculates what kind of sizes you need. But it's museum code and it's not complete, references headers like conio.h, dos.h and something called graph.h which is totally unknown as well as a custom library mwk.lib that's not included.

iirc conio.h, dos.h, and graph.h are TurboC headers, so the author probably assumes you're using that and didn't include them.

Yes I recognize conio and dos.h at least.

Borland Turbo C/C++ should do the trick.

Yeah I downloaded several versions of Borland and looked around the header files, but none has graph.h, they have graphics.h.

I got around those by commenting them out and removing the references to stuff like kbhit, but it's in the comments that he made some of his own stuff that was referenced in MWK.LIB which is the initials of the author so I think that's all his own stuff. But I was able to replace most of the dos stuff or just bypass it.

On stackoverflow I found alternative implementations for his macros for COSD, TAND and SIND I was able to just replace those with a copy & paste.

Only vin() which is likeky in MWK.lib I had to write myself based on how the author seemed to use it. A function that takes a bunch of arguments such as a void pointer, creates a prompt, uses the input to set a value by address for earlier declared variables in main, or sets a default value if nothing is entered.

It's compiling and working on linux now, had to disable the press any key to abort since I have no candidate to replace kbhit and the operation is super fast on a modern PC so it's not needed. On dosbox it runs a lot slower so I can see why it was originally needed.

I know you don't need it now, but for next time: To check for pending input on a terminal in Linux you need to fiddle with terminal attributes, specifically disable ICANON and set MIN=TIME=0. Manual page; here be dragons.

I remember learning to write rudimentary games with djgpp and allegro back in the 90's. I think the IDE I used was called rhide - there are plenty of screenshots available with google image search if you want to bask in the DOS glory.

Maybe, but I don't see what the appeal would be for cds. Unless someone is looking for an authentic CD skipping sound, it's otherwise a near perfect recreation of the song. There's no "feeling" like you get with vinyl or tape. Maybe kids will want to have a binder full of music.

Speaking of remotes, it would be handy to have a decent universal remote for the random equipment I pick up. Are old Harmony remotes obsolete or still useful? Looks like you can get them for $20-$30. Do you need a computer to program them?

You do need a computer to set them up, but they're pretty good. I like having a hub based one because I can use various smart devices when the kids lose the remote (or it's currently out of service because it randomly can't find the hub, like right now).

Could you cut down LTO backup tape? I have no idea what the formulation is, but it's still being made by the mile, and given the insane data densities they are up to now it's probably very uniform, if nothing else.

Yeah, Techmoan has gone into this a bit, while there are plenty of new good record players out there with a wide variety of internals, there seems to be literally only one or two tape mechanisms being made these days, and they're all cheap lovely ones.
So no matter how expensive the player and fancy it's case and other features, they all use the same cheap tape mechs.

I stupidly sold off all my good tape decks, but when I had them I played around with Type II and Type IV tapes and different sources like CDs, Spotify and SACDs. If you manage to calibrate bias, noise reduction, tape type and recording levels just right it can become almost indistinguishable from CD quality. It's a shitton of work and time and quite a bit of luck involved though.

LimaBiker

Indeed, a good cassette tape can sound almost identical to the source material. I'd go as far as saying that the casual listener won't hear the difference unless you point out the faint noise between the tracks.
One of the greatest inventions ever was the adjustable bias on the front panel. Almost no one is gonna bother opening up their tape deck and adjusting the bias and equalisation for their tape of choice, and then stick to one single type of tape.
With the front-adjustable bias, you can dial in the best bias for each tape in a matter of minutes.

Cassette with DBX and at 9,5cm/s is even better, but you only see that in those semi-professional decks and portastudios. Very punchy.

Tapes duplicated today are sometimes duplicated on stacks and stacks of hifi cassette decks. Thomas Baur (mfbfreaks.com) started out that way, and that should deliver hifi quality. Just a whole room with dozens of them.

I think he now also has a professional bin machine or two. No idea how the quality compares. Knowing him, he'll at least put in some effort to make it sound good. But i agree - most prerecorded cassettes sound pretty mediocre.

I can see CDs having their resurgence too because ooh shiny. But i'd rather see new laser discs. Bigger is better.

With regards to data tape - the issue is that every type of magnetic coating needs a different bias and equalisation. Putting data tape on a Type Normal deck will sound horrible.
I can also imagine that the dynamic range and linearity will be radically different. Digital doesn't care about a non-linear response in many cases. For analog that just means distortion.

Finally there is a difference in the roughness of tape. DAT data tapes VS DAT audio tapes are the same size and shape, and a DAT audio recorder will record on data tape, but the heads will wear out a lot faster. I don't know the details - i've been out of that circle for 10 years already.

Vinyl records vary a lot with how good they sound. If it's a lazy 'Put the CD master on a vinyl record' it'll be mediocre to crappy. If it's mastered specifically to sound good within the limits of vinyl (dynamic range, cutting head velocity) it can sound a lot more attractive than what you get on the CD. A special sauce of velocity limiting and compression on record VS brickwall limiting on CD.
