Down came the glitches and burned us in ditches and we slept after eating our dead.
Probably my least favorite episode so far, which is impressive because there were some really good individual scenes, but the ending just felt so stupid to me and really brought the rest down.

Like, sure, I get he's a cannibal rapist cult leader, fine, but him being so seemingly unconcerned with a major fire burning down an important building around him really did push him way off into cartoonish for me, like he's so evil he no longer even has a sense of self preservation?

And I wasn't the person in my group to break out laughing at the end before openly wondering why they were walking away into a lake, but I did agree with them. I don't know quite why it felt so silly, but I guess they were just walking so straight, with such purpose, directly at a giant body of water... plenty of sensible reasons in universe they might, but it just didn't feel right. Also agree it felt empty, too, felt like it would have been the perfect time to show some people who were utterly cowed that Joel didn't have to kill because all the fight had already gone out of them.

Ah well, looking forward to the last episode regardless.

Don't suppose you want to post the Finnish with word-by-word break down for those of us who just think that's cool?

Sure, although it's pretty simple.

There's an old saying that something "syö miestä", "eats at a man". "Syö", the third person form of "syödä", to eat. "Miestä", the partitive form of "mies", man.

The etymology is probably something similar to "gnawing at you", since that's also a saying in Finnish, although the word used is "kalvaa" (the third person form of "kalvata"), which is probably the closest translation to "gouging", ie. making a groove or a hole in something.

Whoever translated the name of the movie clearly had a stroke of genius and decided to use the movie's themes and plotline and play with it by literally titling the movie "Ravenous, the wilderness eats at a man". Most Finnish movie titles these days aren't translated at all since we've become a more international society, and most of us speak (or at least understand) English, plus of course Brands be Branding, but back in the day every movie's title was either directly translated, or at least given a Finnish subtitle like with Ravenous. It doesn't always work as well as it did here, because for instance the old romcom "Rules of Engagement" was just renamed as "gently caress the Rules".

I guess it made sense to someone somewhere.

E:

Other classics include...

"Isäni on Turbomies" (My Father is Turbo Man), the Finnish title for Jingle All the Way.
"Rita Hayworth - Avain Pakoon" (Rita Hayworth - the key to escape), Shawshank Redemption (this is clever but baffling)
"Voi, sinne meni neitsyys!" (Oh dear, there goes my virginity!) Poor Cecily
"Runkkarit" (Wankers), Going Greek.

What did you say the strategy was?

ShowTime posted:

Well, yea, kinda. Depends on what you mean by "making". There are 7 different directors. That's pretty common for series though. They all stick to the same plot and have the same producers, same writer, same editor, etc, but the director is different in almost every episode. It's not that unusual that things feel a little different.

There's been a bunch of series that do this, why is that? Not pro/against the idea just curious as to why it happens like that

I think it mostly just comes down to how much work it'd be to direct more than a few hour long episodes at once. Each episode is like directing half a movie.

Pretty much. Especially with a big show like The Last of Us. The directors were working for a couple weeks before they were even filming, and then easily 2-4 weeks filming each episode. It's a lot of work filming a series, so they break it down to more manageable chunks. With a show like The Last of Us, its constantly filming, but you have quite a few different locations so there is basically a director at each area, getting it ready and the actors (and much of the production team) just arrive and get at it. If it was 1 director, they wouldn't be able to get everything ready at every location while filming.

But it's mostly just a time thing. A director for each episode is kind of odd, it's usually chunks. I worked on a couple season length shows and it was usually a director for 3-4 episodes at a time, depending on how long an episode was.

I think my only complaint with the vaccine issue is that the actual infected seem like a much bigger threat than turning. Like all those people at KC were dead and it didn't really matter if they got one bite or whatever, because the infected were literally ripping people to shreds and an organized paramilitary group couldn't do anything to stop it. The vaccine would feel a little more urgent if there actually seemed to be a threat from just walking through a cloud of spores or something. Otherwise it's a little unclear why there are still such huge groups of infected wandering around twenty years later.

Minor complaint, though, doesn't really matter.

I just saw a vaccine as giving humans a chance to fight back where they could win in the long-term. The infected aren't super smart, so if you're careful and well armed you can now clear out an area. KC seemed like an outlier in the number of infected it had, but even that would be doable if you had a vaccine. Same as now, if someone is hurt we can get them medical attention and they can recover. Without a vaccine anyone who gets wounded, no matter how minor, is not only dead, but now hostile to you as well.

It's hope, or at least a better hope than just hoping all the infected die before humanity does.

That's just how I justify it in my head, it's a good show whatever the reason for the vaccine.

Eh this whole "fungus" thing doesn't seem like a big deal imo, it's only been twenty years and humans with immunity are already popping up. I say, this whole cross-country trip is just putting Ellie at higher risk, better off letting her settle down in Jackson and start a family there and hoping for the best.

I'm kind of confused. Previously on: Joe mentioned that the infected don't live that long aside from some edge cases. And the ropey protrusions get dried out and die off. But if FEDRA locked the infected underground in Kansastucky City, did they not dry out or die off on their own? Because of the humidity underground?

Troy Baker made an appearance on Alanah Pearce's podcast talking about this episode and his role, and his take was: David's grip on the community was starting to fray. People were losing faith in him, his big show of slapping a little girl in the face in public did not enhance his authority as well as he'd hoped. His inner circle were dead.

And David knew it. When he saw Todd's Steakhouse go up in flames, he knew that he was absolutely hosed, there was nothing left for him. That's why instead of going out to try and mobilize support, he decided to slake his worse impulses on the closest target. Because no one would mobilize for him anymore, the rest of the Silverlake community were deliberately staying inside and not coming out to help put out the burning building, nor render aid to him.

Its odd to me that people think David is a hat on a hat. David to me is neither too complex, nor too shallow, he's somewhere in the middle. At times he seems like a 2d character, but ultimately he's pretty simple. He wants to use religion to control his group, and he is willing to do whatever he can to maintain that control. Being a pedophile and a rapist is just an extension of someone who loves to be in control of others.

I'd hardly call him a hat on a hat, if anything he is a little too basic and singularly purposed.
